The "free lunch" saying comes from the economist Milton Friedman, I believe.

 

Which is ironic, because he advocated a central bank that controls interest rates. I don't take him seriously like I do Ludwig von Mises.

 

But it's true - you can force people to use your particular currency, then print more of it, force people to give you a portion of their income (taxation), then borrow money in their name, without their permission... all things governments can legally do.

 

But in the end, all you're doing is creating market inefficiencies which hinder the structure of production. Money isn't magical or ethical - it's simply a signal system that tells people how to organize their efforts most effectively.
