Your favourite cult classics

Featured Replies

What are some books/bands/shows/etc. that you like that are considered cult classics?

Personally I like the show called Mystery Science Theatre 3000. Its basically this guy and two robots that are subject to watching horrible movies and they make fun of them the whole time.

....do the Harry Potter books count? :awesome:

They're pretty mainstream.

I used to love Mystery Science Theatre, completely forgot about that.

The Prisoner!

I've been obsessed with it since I was about seven. It's the reason my brain is so warped.

I only know the Mystery Science Theatre movie but it's hilarious!!

But first I thought this was about the "cult" thing here because it's in the Lounge forum...

It probably had something to do with that, that's kinda why I laughed at the thread title when I first saw it

Yeah I think Briggs was playing a little trick. I did a double-take.

And what is "cult"?

Yeah this thread got me wondering, it's one of those annoying terms that sometimes get over-used to the point where it's meaningless, like "indie". For example, some people would say that Donnie Darko is a cult film, but to me it's the typical favourite film of any renegade teenage girl.

To me a 'cult classic' is something which may not be well known or even heard of on a wide scale, but is incredibly popular within the small circles of people who do enjoy it. So Donnie Darko would be on there. I'd say that Charlie Brooker, writer, journalist, presenter, has a 'cult' following, as in, you could ask 20 people walking by in the street before getting to one who's even heard of him, but that one person is probably going to know a lot about his work.

There's a hysteria about things which are 'cult, and in a way it's a lot more genuine then the hysteria of things which are mainstream, because whether we like it or not other people generally agreeing that something is great can often influence us to further agree with them. With cult there isn't a mass acceptance, it's someone appreciating something they've found based completely on it's own merits, and then discovering that there are others who appreciate it just as much. That's why it's such a big compliment to be cult.

In a more literal sense, I think being part of a cult following is being part of something that you know the 'outsiders' probably won't understand. Take Mystery Science Theatre, it's one of those things that you sortof just stumble upon, and you'll either get it or not, it might even take a bit of time. But cult things such as this aren't the kinda thing that you invite a group of friends round and go "You guys have GOT to see this!" because you know it's something they'll either get, or they won't. It's pop culture on a more personable scale.

Arrested Development is a total cult thing, the way I see it is that people who get it, love it to bits and people who don't are just confused about why other people love it so much, plus it's not that popular really.

The Room - has a cult following, they played it at the cinema here recently but I missed it :( (it's widely known as the "worst film ever")

There's 2 sides to it then, genuinely brilliant stuff and hilariously shit stuff that cool kids like "ironically"

Yeah what is with 'The Room'? It just looks terrible, I don't understand why it caught on.

It really is THAT bad, the acting, the plot, the script, plot holes and continuity errors all over the place, it's hilariously terrible. It's up for debate if it is actually a serious film because it's so bad, the general consensus is that it is supposed to be serious though.

I did some major research (Wiki'd) and the guy pumped 7 million dollars into promoting this! The best sentence is this:

"Wiseau promotes the film as a black comedy and insists that its humor is actually intentional, although cast members have publicly disputed these claims[1] and many audience members generally view the film as a poorly-made drama.[2][3]"

It sounds like he tried to make a serious film, but it turned out to be so incredibly bad he got embarrassed and pretended it was a comedy.

I'll look out for it.

I agree about Arrested Development. I don't think I've ever met somebody who is just 'meh' about it, those who like it love it to bits and know all the quotes etc.

And Reilly, you're right about MST3K. The first time it was showed to me there were about 8 people. Everybody except for me fell asleep at one point, but I was wide awake laughing as quietly as possible. Most people just didn't get it. and I've shown it to friends, some love it, some think its really stupid.

The nice thing about things with cult followings are that the focus is more on the fans and what they want, or what the creator wants rather than warping an original creation to meet marketing demands.

Oh cult.

As we were speaking of 'The Room', I thought I'd bring up 'Birdemic', probably better known on the other side of the Atlantic for selling out cinema seats in New York, and its looking like it's going to be shown nationwide, and then, who knows.

While The Room was intended to be a serious film, this clearly was meant to be horrible. The director has played it pretty straight in interviews, but it's as if the actors are trying to be wooden (And actually, they're doing a good job) and the special effects give it away. The last clip at the end of the trailer especially, there's just no way anyone would think that look's fine in a film, they just wouldn't use it.

Though it does look hilarious, I do think it's pretty fucked up that some people are trying to make bad films to get on that 'best worst' list.

Is that a good thing, bad thing, anything? Does it make it a bit more special that it doesn't just belong to everyone? Like a rid out whore?
