UK Election 2010

Featured Replies

I still can't believe it's been 5 years since Mr Blair won Labour a 3rd term in office, how badly have they fucked up the country since 2005 is amazing.

So are you going to vote on May 6th?

Whom do you think will win the election?

Do you give a toss about it?

What are the differences between the major parties? What are they running on, and how does the media portray them? I know more about supernovae and algae than I do modern British politics.

How is our country "fucked up"? You'll be begging for a return to this if/when the Conservatives win

I can't believe people are stupid enough to fall for Cameron's cherade.

i completely agree with you ! We need a "wing of change"! :D

I'm actually not sure who I'm voting for at the moment. The way Labour has capitulated under GB's leadership is astonishing, almost embarassing when he gets shot down every other week in Parliament by Cameron's sharp tongue. But they're the party most likely to maintain my job security, so who knows. I'll definately be watching the three debates with interest.

I think its retarded when people say Gordon Brown has fucked up the Labour party. Blair jumped ship right before the whole economic crisis. People moan that Brown has only made things worse when things could be alot worse if it weren;t for some of the decisions he has taken. Of course he's not glamourous in the slightest but i'd prefer a drab minger who is dedicated and competent in his job to someone who is distracted by an abnormal focus on image. The economic crisis was not Gordon Browns fault, people were/are going to lose their jobs or find it hard, whether Brown was there or not. Voting in David Cameron and the Tories isn't going to result in an instant prosperity and a flurry of financial security. Those things are all going to take time to come.

Now i'm obviously not a Labour voter or a supporter of the party but I just think that's it's asinine when people deride Gordon Brown, who on the whole, hasn't been doing badly at all.

Brown recruits Doctor Who David Tennant to boost election ad campaign

He once claimed he had saved the world from economic disaster.

So perhaps it was appropriate for Gordon Brown to call on the services of a former Doctor Who for Labour's first broadcast of the election campaign.

The prime minister has recruited David Tennant to urge voters to trust his government's resolve and experience on.

And the advert - which is already online - also features Sean Pertwee, the son of former Timelord Jon.

Support: David Tennant, seen here with Sarah Brown, provided the voiceover for Labour's first election broadcast

The broadcast entitled The Road Ahead, which will also be shown on terrestrial channels today - presents the election as a choice at a crossroads between following the straight road ahead to recovery or taking an apparently easier route which will swiftly lead into disaster.

Pertwee plays an everyman figure walking down a road across bleak moorland under dark skies.

As he trudges on, he recalls how Britain had faced 'potentially the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression', when everyone was 'unsure about the road ahead'

He then goes on to describe how at last year's G20 summit Mr Brown had 'led the way with a plan to manage the storm' while Conservatives opposed his actions.

Then, in a dramatisation of the choice which Labour thinks voters are facing, he reaches a crossroads, with one path leading down into what appears to be an easier valley route, which is revealed to lead into a series of roadblocks and obstacles.

Everyman: Sean Pertwee, whose father Jon also played Doctor Who, is seen walking through a barren landscape during the advert

Deciding to keep to the straight path over the moors, he says: 'There are real signs that we are on the right road and I really don't think now is the time to change direction, to cut and run.

'All around the world, economists are saying "See this through.'"

'The Conservatives say they know better. They want to take us on a different path.

'Things are still fragile, which is why now is not the time to change teams and go off in a different direction.

'Resolve. Let's continue using our experience with the global community to support our economy, getting British families and businesses back on their feet again. Only Labour will keep us on this road to recovery.'

As he strides off towards a bright horizon where a warm sun is rising, a voice-over by Tennant says: 'We have been through tough times, but by staying on the right road, we can make Britain the country we all want it to be, to build a future that is fair for all of us.'

Pertwee said he hoped the broadcast - filmed in the North Yorkshire Moors national park and the Yorkshire village of Staithes - would 'get people talking with their friends and families about which party has the best policies for jobs and the recovery, and the dangers of changing course now.'

He added: 'We have to be optimistic. We are on the right road out of some very difficult times and the last thing we need now is to change teams and change direction down a dead end.'

On the attack: Conservatives with Gordon Brown masks at the launch of their new poster campaign earlier today

article-1265420-0919E407000005DC-289_468x238.jpg

Hardhitting: The posters pursue the Tories 'Time for change' theme which has been a central plank of their campaign

The Tories today launched their next wave of election posters, warning that Gordon Brown would repeat his 'failures' if re-elected.

The posters build on the brutal 'Vote for me' campaign - this time with a picture of a smiling Prime Minister alongside slogans such as: 'I took billions from pensions. Let me do it again.'

The new campaign was kicked off as Mr Brown prepared to launch Labour's manifesto in Birmingham.

Some 30 vans advertised the posters in the city centre, where more than 60 Tory activists dressed up as the Prime Minister.

Other slogans, adapted from the previous poster campaign, include: 'I caused record youth unemployment. Let me do it again,'

'I increased the gap between rich and poor. Let me do it again,' and 'I released 80,000 criminals early. Let me do it again.'

And a new poster launched today states: 'I'll make you pay more National Insurance. Vote for me.'

The posters are set to appear on more than 2,000 billboard sites across the UK over the next two weeks.

Did you really have to come in here and spam, clog up and ultimately add nothing of note to this actual News thread?

But could you actually tell me how this contributes to what people have been talking about please.

I think it's pretty self-explanatory, and anyway, it's Dave's thread, not yours.

No, it's not self-explanatory, that's why i'm asking. I don't see how it's contributing anything and so i'm asking, it's not a hard question like.

Where, in either of my previous posts have I laid claim to this thread? And what difference does that make at all anyway, a question is a question. I'm pretty sure you can answer a simple question.

A guy who believes in having a friendly forum to make it better doesn't set a great example here. Refusing to answer an actual, genuine question, written in a civil manner, there really is something wrong with you.

there's more to the economy when running a government. How about the toll immigration is having on schools, NHS, housing? The letter two Peterborough Councillors wrote to the leaders sums the country up perfectly. Its a problem that's been happening for a while and it ain't anything to do with the global recessions, it stems from a government who has a leader who can't act.
I still can't believe it's been 5 years since Mr Blair won Labour a 3rd term in office, how badly have they fucked up the country since 2005 is amazing.

True that. Brown shouldn't even be in charge anyway, seeing as he wasn't chosen by the electorate, but for the country's sake, let's hope he's out on his ear come May 7th.:dozey:

it stems from a government who has a leader who can't act.

.................except as a stooge.:P

well exactly he used to be Blair's gimp what do you expect!

:stunned:

David Cameron and the Conservatives will win the election on May 6th and with a majority of 21. You heard it here first.

p.s - not that I'm hoping that will happen. I am very much a floating voter at the mo.
