Sam1036
World Championships Round 1 Review We are seven days into the marathon of the mind that is the World Championships. So far we’ve had a handful of centuries, shocks and the appearance of everyone’s favourite new player, Dechawat Poomjaeng. Defending Champion Ronnie O’Sullivan made light work of experienced campaigner Marcus Campbell on day one, defeating the Scot 10-4. O’Sullivan’s game looked sharp in all departments apart from his long game, but this has never stopped him in previous years. He will face Ali Carter in the next round in a repeat of last year’s final. The “Captain” went through the gears in his second session against Ben Woollaston winning all of the required five frames. His long game looked very strong - exactly what will be required to take his chances against O’Sullivan. Stuart Bingham is on the verge of a very comfortable win over debutant Sam Baird who struggled to settle in the first session. Leading 8-1 going into today’s final session he looks certain to make it into round two. Mark Davis made it three wins over John Higgins this season with a strong performance in defeating the four time former champion. His safety and potting were of the highest class and through both sessions he outplayed a rather bedraggled looking Scot. At the age of 40 it’s refreshing to see an older player hitting his peak later in life. Shaun Murphy has slipped under the radar coming into this year’s World Championships despite having had a solid season. His game is always suited to the longer formats and he had a comfortable win over the tricky Martin Gould. His opponent Graeme Dott survived eight gruelling hours in the lion’s den with Peter Ebdon. Ebdon, the 2002 World Champion, was taking slow play to a new level as he struggled with his game. Dott at times looked thoroughly frustrated but did well to raise his game and come through a 10-6 winner. New father Marco Fu avenged his defeat to Matthew Stevens at this stage last year by defeating the Welshman 10-7 yesterday. Getting over the winning line proved difficult but it’s been a decent year for Marco and I fancy he will cause Judd Trump a few troubles in the next round. Speaking of Trump, he had an easy victory over Dominic Dale. Moving through the gears effortlessly in the second session to win 10-5, however Fu will prove a much sterner test. Neil Robertson is currently leading 5-4 over Robert Milkins. This was a tough first round draw but I still expect the Aussie to progress. His 143 was a new highest break for him at the tournament. Ricky Walden was in superb form against an out of sorts Michael Holt. He was clinical in the balls and his overall game looked very good, however he won’t be given the same chances against Neil Robertson – assuming the Thunder from Down Under progresses. Extremely talented Welsh youngster Michael White made his breakthrough in defeating Mark Williams. It was a solid performance against an under cooked Mark Williams who’s dreadful season ended on a low. With Stephen Maguire losing to Dechawat Poomjaeng, White will now be the favourite to progress to his first ranking event quarter final. Dechawat Poomjaeng became everyone’s new favourite player when he held his nerve to defeat the World Number Four Stephen Maguire. His very slow play around the table seemed to be forgiven due to his eccentric behaviour and bright personality. However behind these strange antics was a very driven and impressive performance. The biggest shock of the first round was Mark King’s very remarkable victory over Mark Allen. He thrived under the intense spotlight and played his best snooker when the finish line approached. It was probably the best match I’ve seen from King but, for Allen, it’s a big setback as he was heavily fancied at the start of the tournament. Promising youngster Jack Lisowski showed he still isn’t quite ready to breakthrough as he was swept aside by Barry Hawkins. Hawkins was very clinical and cleaned up Lisowski’s mistakes. Mark Selby wasn’t that impressive in his first round victory over Matthew Selt. However that won’t bother the Jester, winning is all that matters in round one. He will be a big favourite against Hawkins but unless he improves he could struggle. Round One Review

busybeeburns
World Snooker Championship 2013: Murphy into last eight Shaun Murphy beat Graeme Dott 13-11 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship at the Crucible. With the game level at 10-10, Murphy gained a crucial lead on a re-spotted black before closing out the match. In the morning session, play was temporarily held up when Dott suffered several static shocks at the table. After the Scot complained to the match referee, the players took an early interval while an official sprayed water on the carpet around the table. Murphy appeared to be untroubled by the static problem but 2006 champion Dott seemed to be affected whenever he had to play shots from close to the cushion. However, it did not seem to affect his game too much as he fought back from a 6-2 overnight deficit to win six of the eight frames in the session to level the match at 8-8. In the evening session, the two players exchanged frames before 2005 champion Murphy won the 21st frame after the scores were tied at 52-52. He won the next frame with a break of 53 to establish a two-frame lead. Although Dott fought back to win the next frame, Murphy clinched the victory in the 24th to secure a place in the last eight for the first time since 2010. World number one Mark Selby will resume on Saturday afternoon with a 9-7 lead over Barry Hawkins. Selby, who lost 10-3 to Hawkins in the first round last year at the Crucible when struggling with a neck injury, hit breaks of 98 and 103 to help him to a 5-3 lead after the morning session. Hawkins, ranked 14, pulled level at 6-6 before losing the next three frames. However, he hit a break of 59 to win the evening's final frame. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/22307688
busybeeburns
White thrashes Poomjaeng to progress Welsh qualifier Michael White thrashed crowd favourite Dechawat Poomjaeng 13-3 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship in Sheffield. The 21-year-old from Neath resumed 7-1 ahead and wrapped up the six frames he needed to win with a session to spare. White, ranked 41 in the world, will play Ricky Walden or Robert Milkins in the last eight starting on Tuesday. Victory there would see him become the first debutant to reach the semi-finals since Andy Hicks in 1995. White scored far more heavily than his Thai opponent, posting a break of 101 in the second frame and sealing his victory with 102, having also rattled in breaks of 83 and 73 from 10-2 up. "I played well all the way through the game and I am just thrilled," White told BBC Sport. "I was playing well in the qualifiers so I thought I had every chance. To get to the quarter-finals is an unbelievable feeling." Poomjaeng, who continued to entertain the crowd with his antics around the table, gave away the fourth frame without a ball being potted as three misses were called against him. The world number 70, who upset Stephen Maguire in the opening round, could only manage a highest break of 51 in the match, and an enterprising 44 in the 14th frame only delayed the inevitable. "He is a bit of a character and last [Thursday] night he was laughing and joking with the crowd, but I dealt with it pretty well," White added. "I stayed in the zone and kept focused like I knew I had to." Judd Trump showed signs of the form that took him to the Crucible final in 2011 as he opened up a 6-2 lead in his second-round match with Marco Fu. The Hong Kong cueman took the opening two frames but a break of 109 got the world number three up and running. Trump levelled at 2-2 at the interval and reeled off four more consecutive frames on the resumption including two more centuries - 127 and 112 - to establish a commanding lead. They will resume at 1000 BST on Saturday and play to a finish on Saturday evening. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/22305023

Reilly
I'm actually losing interest, haven't seen a decent game yet, the best players are just playing solid, not fantastic. Ding's the only good player left in the bottom half of the draw but his face depresses me greatly. In the top half still a few potentially good matches though, but as I say in the bottom we get to look forward to the likes of Ricky Walden vs Robert Milkins. busybeeburns
World Snooker Championship 2013: Hawkins knocks out Selby Barry Hawkins shocked world number one Mark Selby 13-10 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship for the first time. Hawkins, who trailed 9-6 at one stage, won six frames out of seven in the final session to end the UK and Masters champion's 'Triple Crown' hopes. Selby resumed 9-7 up but Kent-based Hawkins, 34, ground out winning frames to repeat last year's win over Selby. Meanwhile, Judd Trump defeated Marco Fu 13-7 to reach the last-eight. Australian Open winner Hawkins, who advances past the second round for the first time in eight attempts, built a highest break of 89 and it was his combative game which left Selby unable to gather any momentum. "I struggled all the way through the match and Barry took the chances and scored better than me," admitted Selby. "I have struggled all season but won two events, even though I was not playing great. "Coming here I was confident but to perform like that is a disappointment. I had no drive, no buzz out there and I didn't really show up." Despite falling 9-7 behind, Dartford cueman Hawkins battled back by winning the 17th frame on the black - and it proved to be the turning point. Selby, who usurped Trump at the top of the rankings after finishing second in the China Open, missed opportunities in that frame to increase his advantage further and Hawkins levelled the scores in the next. The pair exchanged frames for 10-10, before Hawkins punished his opponent for uncharacteristic misses by winning the next two frames. It left him one away from causing a huge upset and the world number 14 showed no signs of Crucible jitters to set up a tie against either Mark King or Ding Junhui in the last eight. "I am lost for words - I am just delighted," said Hawkins. "It is one of the best results of my life - I feel like I have won the World Championship. "Everybody left in the tournament has to feel they can win it otherwise there is no point in turning up. If I can find some fluent form, you never know what might happen." Earlier on Saturday, England's Trump opened up a 6-2 lead in the first session, stroking in three century breaks on his way to establishing a commanding lead. But breaks of 83, 117, 66 and 70 saw Hong Kong's Fu reduce his deficit to 8-7 before the world number three won the last to edge ahead. Trump, runner-up in 2011, opened up a 6-2 lead in the first session, stroking in three century breaks on his way to establishing a commanding lead. But breaks of 83, 117, 66 and 70 saw Hong Kong's Fu reduce his deficit to 8-7 before the world number three won the 16th to edge ahead. Trump started the final session in blistering fashion, knocking in quick-fire breaks of 50, 82 and 53 to go one away from victory, and despite being 53 behind, he pinched it on the black to set up a meeting with 2005 champion Shaun Murphy in the next round. "It was nice to get it over and done with. I struggled earlier but I am pleased to get through," said Trump. "Coming into he tournament, I felt the ones who hadn't played too much would go on and those who had, would burn themselves out, which is what has happened. "I feel fresh, I feel fit and I felt going going into the second session of the day and I will be prepared for Shaun." World number 17 Fu added: "I felt OK but I missed one or two shots and lost my way. I didn't play that badly, but Judd punished me. It was costly against the calibre of someone like him. There is no reason why he can't go on to win it." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/22322954

busybeeburns
Ronnie O'Sullivan into World Snooker Championship quarters Defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan cruised past Ali Carter 13-8 to reach the quarter-finals of the World Championship in Sheffield. O'Sullivan looked composed in the first session, taking a 5-3 lead, but Carter held himself together in the next to stay in touch at 7-9. But it was all O'Sullivan in the final session, rattling in a century as he dropped only one of five frames played. The result sets up an all-Essex last-eight clash against Stuart Bingham. O'Sullivan, seeking to win his fifth Crucible title, only returned to snooker at the start of the tournament after a self-imposed 11-month sabbatical from the sport. And while world number one Mark Selby - who lost to Barry Hawkins - said he felt "burned out" as a result of playing too much snooker, the break appears to have done 37-year-old O'Sullivan, who seemed fresh and invigorated, the power of good. O'Sullivan said: "I am pleased to get through. Even last year, quite a few times I felt it was slipping away but you have to stick in there and take each pot at a time. "You have to realise it is not a sprint but a marathon. I knew this would be a proper test against Ali. It is not going to get any easier and you just have to keep plodding along." Two-time world runner-up Carter, who threatened to retire in 2011, remains winless in 13 attempts against O'Sullivan in a ranking-event match - something which BBC pundit and seven-time world champion Stephen Hendry described as "tough" to get over. "Ronnie plays like this every time I have played against him - no wonder I haven't beaten him," said Carter, who has suffered for much of the last two years from the debilitating bowel condition Crohn's disease. "I was there trying to win, not avoid defeat. It was a tough day today and he did not do anything wrong. Ronnie will go on to win it if his head doesn't fall off." In a repeat of last year's final, breaks of 78, 66 and a sublime 125 allowed 'The Rocket' to surge ahead in the first session. After 'The Captain' won four of the next five frames to make it 7-7, O'Sullivan took the last two, courtesy of breaks of 73 and 86, to sneak ahead going into Monday evening's decisive session. Both players had their chances in a tense opening frame, but it was O'Sullivan who went further ahead. Carter pulled a frame back, but his opponent took the next two with breaks of 88 and 106 to move within a frame of victory. And there was to be no miraculous recovery as a knock of 89 proved enough for O'Sullivan to progress. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/22346476
busybeeburns
World Snooker Championship 2013: Ding sees off King challenge China's number one Ding Junhui beat Mark King 13-9 to reach the last eight at the World Championship in Sheffield. King looked confident in the first session at the Crucible, opening up a 6-2 lead, but Ding responded superbly to take eight of the next nine frames. England's King battled back to 9-10 before Ding stepped up a gear to win the three frames he needed for victory. In Monday's other early match, world number eight Stuart Bingham beat Mark Davis 13-10 to reach the quarters. Having finished their first session 6-2 down, despite a pair of century breaks, Ding dominated the second session with breaks of 59, 98 and 74 to hold a two-frame lead. The world number nine went further ahead in the final session with a 103, before King pulled two frames back. Ding took the 20th with another ton, and won the next too, before wrapping up a victory which sets up a last-eight clash against Barry Hawkins. In a closely fought all-English contest lacking in real quality, Bingham and Davis were level at 10-10 before the former's 111 break paved the way for him to win three successive frames. Bingham, from Basildon in Essex, reaches the quarter-final stage for the first time in seven attempts. The 36-year-old will next face defending champion Ronnie O'Sullivan, who wrapped up a comfortable 13-8 win over Ali Carter. "It was a tough couple of days. A long, hard battle," said Bingham. "I played well in bits but poor in others. I just couldn't pull away from Mark. "This is my 29th event of the season and I love playing the game. Other people may feel burnout, but you have to get on with it. I feel good." Davis added: "Stuart deserves to win because he played a million times better than me, but I am struggling to work out how I won 10 frames. "It just didn't happen for me, I wasn't hitting the ball well and it is very disappointing." Ding has long been tipped to become a world champion but a semi-final in 2011, in which he lost 17-15 to Judd Trump, remains his best effort at the Crucible. But with contenders such as Mark Selby and Neil Robertson already out of the tournament, the winner of six ranking events is beginning to show his top form. Ding, who has stroked in six centuries in his opening two matches, said: "I think I will be better in the next round but I am happy with how I have played. I feel strong and I want to win. "There is not much pressure to win because I am enjoying the game." Defeat in Sheffield is a familiar feeling for King, who in 14 Crucible appearances has yet to get past the second round. "The first session I was hitting the ball really well, I had some form but Ding played awesome in the second," he said. "He was on a different planet. When he is hitting it like that, no-one can come close to him, not even Ronnie. He is a gentleman and I enjoyed the match." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/22344533
busybeeburns
World Snooker Championship 2013: Walden edges Milkins Ricky Walden survived a late fightback from Robert Milkins to reach the quarter-finals of the World Snooker Championship for the first time. Walden, 30, had led 5-3 after the first session, a lead he extended to 10-6 in the next with breaks of 63 and 76. His fellow Englishman Milkins, 37, hit back in the final session at the Crucible, claiming five frames, but Walden held on to win 13-11. He goes on to face Welshman Michael White in the last eight. Walden, winner of last July's Wuxi Classic, had never won a match at the famous Sheffield venue until his first-round victory over Michael Holt. "It was very tough match and I am delighted to get through. The momentum was with Robert tonight and he was throwing everything at me," he said. "Michael White is on a bit of a roll, but I am looking forward to the match. I am feeling decent, enjoying every minute of it and hopefully I can do the business." Milkins, who was playing in Sheffield for the first time since 2005, added: "I played really well this evening. I produced some good snooker but the second session was not good for me - it was too much to catch up. "I have a lot of respect for Ricky. He played well and held himself together." http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/snooker/22329909

Reilly
Milkins comeback was pretty interesting, some of the better play I've seen, the first session of Hawkins vs Davis was of great quality but the rest of the match went to shit. And I agree with the predictions^ except Michael White to win.
Reilly
It didn't surprise me Barry Hawkins went through, it seems like Terry Griffiths is some kind of genius, pretty much every player who's stepped up recently is saying Terry's behind it. Reilly
At 4-4 Trump vs O'Sullivan could turn out to be the first truly great game, they're both playing well (Trump vs Murphy was a good game but only really showed quality in the final session, it was sloppy earlier).
