What do you think of when you think of England?

Featured Replies

I know that my brother is thinking about leaving England once he's finished his physics degree.
Does he have any idea yet what he's going to do or where he's going to do it?

Britain isn't such a bad place to live.
You're right there, compared to many countries around the world. Whether the people who have left have set their living standards too high or whatever, the grass is always greener. Some will return but many will not. Are they right? Who knows!

I'd like to hear Bart's opinion on leaving England, he's one person off here who did it!

IT'S FUCKING TRUE I LIVE IN A GYPSY NEIGHBORHOOD WITH MY ALCOHOLIC DAD AND MY 11 SIBLINGS AND WE KEEP MULTIPLYING AND INVADING ALL OF THE EUROPEAN COUNTRIES BECAUSE WE CAN'T SURVIVE IN OUR OVER-POPULATED UNPAVED STREETS WHERE WE BELONG.

:(

Well, I'm gonna go cry and slit my wrists, later guys.

:laugh3:

Are you still with us btw? :p

Britain isn't such a bad place to live. If it was, immigrants wouldn't choose to stay. It does offer them a better quality of life, there's no doubt about that.

Well of course Britain might well offer them a better quality of life than where they migrated from, but that's not the point.

We're talking about those who were actually born and/or have grown up there and have witnessed a drop in standards/way of life over a period of time.

I would have no idea whether that has happened in Switzerland, of course, as I'm not a native of that country.;)

If you don't get a reply, you should assume not.:P

I don't think he does, he mentioned that he would either move to Canada or Russia.

Hmm, I'm gonna go and ask him. :D

EDIT: Oh okay, I understand. You guys aren't anti-immigration, you just don't want me and 'people like me' around.

I'm so evil and so are blacks and asians and middle easterners and latinos

I think Immgration is at the heart of this issue for millions of people.

Every other question during the election campaign is what the Gov will do about the strain on NHS, schools, jobs etc. made worse by millions of Eastern Europeans coming into the country. Not my words, but the words of a nation.

People are leaving the UK for a better standard of living for their families abroad!

That's certainly one of the reasons. Immigration is such a huge problem in this country now. So big that behind the economy, it is the dominating issue on the minds of voters like ourselves. Out of the 3 major parties, the Conservatives (and this isn't a fib) seem the only party which wants to tackle this problem. As David Cameron said he wants immigration reduced from the hundreds of thousands per year to the tens of thousands. Labour's policy will continue to be carefree and the Lib Dems it seems have an even worse stance as they'll bring more immigrants.

Also a severe lack of discipline within this country's society hence the term Broken Britain. And what infuriates me most of all is Gordon Brown and his Labour buddies denying that British society is broken. Well yes they would say that because they're having to defend 13 years in government.

I'm so proud to be British and proud to live in the country and I wouldn't swap my nationality for anything else. But this country can do so much better than it is doing at present. The actions of the government, particularly since it was elected to govern for a 3rd term in 2005 has stunk which has rubbed off onto the public. Desperate change in direction needed.

I would stick one of our American friends in the middle of a council estate dogged by crime and violence in say Birmingham or London. Then their sterotypical views might erode - that's if they come out of it without any stab wounds.

Actually I'm not anti-immigration at all!

:D

Maybe there's been a misunderstanding...

As most European countries Switzerland is affected by the economic crisis and a lot of people lost their jobs. There is also a lot more crime than there used to be.

This actually really annoys me. People sometimes forget that I'm foreign and they complain about immigrants when i'm around them and if I say something they're like 'I don't mean people like you' or 'you're not really foreign'. What?! Just because I'm a white girl from a middle class background doesn't make me any less foreign.

Yeah, that's what I was trying to say, but maybe I didn't get my point out clearly. I live in California and I look just like another American (white, middle class background as well) and then when I give away where I was born it's all OH YOU'RE POOR/BAD EINZ!!!11!!11

If this is really how you guys treat people in real life, then I don't think I'm the one who should be pointed fingers at.

Would it be okay with you guys if I traveled the world when I get older?

Don't worry, they'll be fine. I lived one of the worst areas in Britain for a while and I only got stabbed every other day.

I think about the cold, Queen, Big Ben, London Bridge...

I want to meet England!! :nice:

Look on the bright side, we have Greggs!! :D :wideeyed:

Exactly. Some people are content to just bury their head in the sand and pretend is isn't happening.:dozey:

As Peter said, only totally bigoted people would blame immigrants for the deterioration in social standards in Britain. A lot of the blame lies with the government for just letting everything go to pot.

I'm thinking positively here:

Hopefully things will improve after the elections, whoever is elected.

I would like to see conservatives win locally in my area because both lib-dems and labour are planning on building thousands of houses on the greenbelt near me (which is bad enough but they're not even taking schooling and other facilities into account).

My brother said he would possibly do a physics PhD if all goes well or a computer science masters and then get a job somewhere in Canada.

Good choice. If I had enough money, I would definitely go and live there, preferably on the west coast.;)
