Chris Martin about Radiohead

Featured Replies

Old comments. I can see Radiohead influences in their really early work (pre AROBTTH at least) but I can't see any Radiohead influence from album 2 onwards.

AROBTTH is just Coldplay's signature sound. That album doesn't sound influenced by anybody. Only influenced by themselves - which makes it an unbelievable album and by far their best.

AROBTTH has some songs that sound pretty Radiohead influenced. In My Place for example sounds very similar to Radiohead's High and Dry. Even the album title ''A Rush of Blood to the Head'' seems like a mini tribute to Radiohead's second album The Bends. The title ''The Bends'' is referring to the sickness deep sea divers experience when they rise up too fast. It's basically Decompression Sickness which according to wikipedia ''occurs when nitrogen bubbles in the blood lodge in certain parts of the body''.

X&Y also has a few songs that are Radiohead influenced. Like the lyrics to Twisted Logic which are very similar to Radiohead's Electioneering. (found in OK Computer..the same album Martin mentions giving his left ball for)

-TL-

You go backwards but then you go forwards again

You go backwards but then you go forwards

You go backwards but then you go forwards again

You go backwards but then you go forwards

-Electioneering-

When I go forwards you go backwards

and somewhere we will meet.

When I go forwards you go backwards

and somewhere we will meet.

I think this quote also stands.. (Chris on Radiohead):

"I always look at it like we're in a big musical high school and Radiohead are in the year above us and they still haven't come and sat with us at lunch."

(I'm a new member by the way)

This is a dangerous post. But before I post it keep in mind I have every radiohead album.

I understand Chris likes radiohead and Coldplay's super early stuff has some radiohead influence, but people take it way to far saying they're just radiohead knock offs. In my opinion they sound nothing like them. This is where my post gets dangerous. All radioheads albums sound the same in my opinion, the exception maybe being Pablo Honey, but even that is quite similar to their other work. They rarely ever change their emotional territory, and all their songs have the same "feel". Yes, I like radiohead, but I don't see why they are regarded as "sophisticated" and so highly above other bands. For me a band needs to make a notable change from album to album to be truly great, and in my personal view radiohead doesn't do that. Yes, they're good but they're regarded as perfect by so many people on here. Other bands are allowed to make mistakes but oh, not radiohead!

Sorry for the rant, it just something that really gets to me. I like radiohead but their hardcore fans kind of ruin them for me sometimes. Just my opinion don't bash me.

No atom of my body will ever physically believe that you can hold this opinion.

You're either lying, haven't heard all Radiohead albums (or even most of them) or you genuinely need your hearing tested.

I'm too lazy to read all the posts in this thread; but seriously, I don't get it: Radiohead and Coldplay are like comparing apples to skyscrapers. Nothing alike!!!!

Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head definitely sound like Radiohead had influenced them though. Parachutes in particular. It screams 'The Bends'.

Or that is just my honest opinion. I love the band, I just think most of there albums sound mostly the same....thats not nessisarilly a bad thing, they just p,ay it safe IMO....

I don't understand what this post means...

I don't hear it. The Bends and AROBTTH are two of my most cherished albums. Just different. U2 I can hear definitely. Wait...maybe they are similar...The Bends + AROBTTH + The Unforgettable Fire = ME!

Sorry but I don't think it's opinion that Radiohead's albums do not all sound similar to one another. It is a fact that Kid A is a world apart from The Bends, or The King of Limbs is absolutely nothing like Hail to the Thief. You are actually wrong, don't pull the opinion excuse.

I'm not trying to argue here but I genuinely have a hard time believing you've hard most (if any) Radiohead albums since you've said that. Regardless of their quality, they aren't all the same at all and to say they play it safe is a laugh considering we're on a Coldplay site here.

yeah, I should have gone ahead with the stronger claim as well. I defy everyone on this forum to listen to any three radiohead albums and tell me that they all 'sound the same', and thus that they are 'playing it safe' (In fact, I defy you to name three bands that change their sound MORE OFTEN). Not being a radiohead snob, just saying that, of all criticisms one could give, this is the least viable.

^your not gonna change what I think I'm sorry. I would appreciate it if we ended it here. I knew this would happen when I posted....Please do not reply to this.

Edit: sorry that was for twisted politik! Though I guess it applies to Tnspieler as well. I don't want argue.

It's ok like I said I have no intention of arguing about it, I just couldn't believe what you said about it lol

Haha, calm down. Disagreement is not the same as bashing. I respect your right to have and voice your opinion. And I hope you respect my right to be incredulous about what you said.

Okay cool:). A peaceful compromise!

It's so evil yet so seductive. Kill it and/or fuck it.

I know everyone will jump down my throat, but I really don't see the big deal about Radiohead. I think they're great, but I don't see why everyone treats them like the second coming of Christ.
