I think most sites already have age restrictions, but it's set at 13.

It's crazy that 10 year olds have facebook there just way to young .

Age is just a number. :botoxlips:

I've seen younger ^^

Those people in that video are fucking horrible D: vile people.

I have never come across cyber bullying as bad as that.

I've seen of course people on facebook who like and leave sarcastic comments on a girl's status.

But I don't even like that girl :| so yeahhhh.

Some people post statuses that say ; 'Like this if you hate this person'

thats really nasty and definitely cyber bullying

Well... my opinion on solving these issues, is that better education is more effective than moderation policies and restrictions.

Why?

There will ALWAYS be people wanting to piss someone off on the internet, trolls, pranksters and the like. It is impossible to completely stop them, it is easy for those people to fake their IPs and addresses and become almost untrackable. You can't completely eradicate it from anywhere, it's pointless trying.

Instead, efforts are better spent educating people on what they should do in these situations.

Some people still don't know how to fix their security settings from the dangerously public default on social networking sites and have no idea how much information about them is being unwittingly spread, which is a cause for concern

There also seems to be a problem where the target bites back in cyber-bullying cases. This is what makes an already unpleasant situation, nightmarish. On your profile, you can delete whatever comments, choose to ignore as many idiots as you please, because it is your page, your control. If you respond, you tend to add fuel to the fire. Don't, no matter how offensive it is or hurt you may feel, just ignore, delete, report, do what ya gotta go.

Formspring... Formspring needs a proper explanation, I can give you one as I myself have a Formspring (but nobody ever asks me anything anymore anyway)... it gets more of a bad rap than it deserves. Questions are sent to your account, you choose to answer them, then it gets posted on your profile. Choose. You don't HAVE to answer their questions. You can press that lovely x if you wish, completely ignore and enjoy the rest of your day.

You can also choose to not receive anonymous questions, and only get q's from those with a Formspring profile.

Did you know that last fact? Probably not. Not enough accurate information being spread about these things

I kind of worry that the press and media coverage is actually making the problem worse. They are instilling fear, in a way, with these shock horror stories. I then worry that people will feel pretty out of control then if they ever get into a sticky situation, which is not true at all.

I watched a CNN coverage about Facebook cyber-bullying, and an incident where a gay boy had committed suicide due to homophobic and offensive comments or the such made towards him over FB.

They only focused on things like how prevalent the problem is, talked to some lazy FB manager dude waffle on about how they have a 24/7 team but they cannot catch everything, yada yada. NOT ONCE did they cover a "what you can do if a similar problem ever arises" sorta section, and I am seeing it more and more on news stories relating to the interbutts.

I had a MUCH longer post as my views are strong on this, but it's 5. NEED SLEEP

D: D: D: D: D:

That is absolutely outrageous. Those people have no soul.

It's far too easy to get away with this. Seriously. And with places like FB and Twitter, they claim to have a 24/7 team working on these cases, but I've seen things stay up for days, even weeks before removal...

Very true.

Has anyone heard of Formspring? I think its part of facebook :\ Basically people can set up an account and then others post questions anonymously. Its such an easy way for cowards to hurl abuse at someone by asking demeaning and often really horrible questions.

I actually had someone leave me a comment about how I was "the bad kind of weird" on my Formspring once. Yeah, that was great. :blank:

I think most sites already have age restrictions, but it's set at 13.

That would be correct.

But how could they enforce that? Anyone can lie about their age.

When I joined you needed a University email, but obviously this is no longer the case and I am glad it isn't. I have no idea how it would be enforced.

True. It was like this with Facebook, anyway. It's not like that with sites like MySpace.

Formspring and Tumblr ask boxes and stuff are quite dangerous for cyber-bullying.

And Piczo, back when people used it. :blank:

What is this thread asking? I want to contribute but I can't figure out what everyone is talking about.

I have a Formspring, but nobody asks me anything. :|

And like Emma said, you don't even have to answer the question.

And yeah I've seen 9 year olds on Facebook. They only play the facebook games anyway, so it's not like they need it.

Yah, pretty much what Emma said.

I said self esteem, people need to be educated to not care about such things.

It's like, we can't stop birds pooping, so an educated person would try to avoid places that might have birds shitting.

if you're not educated, as cruel as it sounds, it's your fault for being so affected by it.

one of my children has been bullied online by a so called friend, i printed it out confronted the mother and nothing was done, we are no longer friends with these friends, someone actually hacked into her account and posted horrible things, it was such an invasion of privacy, its a horrible horrible thing, children (and adults) do not realize that once its on the internet it is there forever, count to 10 before you type. this will come back to haunt the bully who ever they are, the old phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones ,but names will never hurt me" just does not apply anymore

Aw that's so sad. There's no reason for anyone to bully anybody.

But that's so wierd that you mentioned "Sticks and stones" because this week was anti-bullying week at my school and they had us watch a movie called Sticks and Stones. It was about this kid that liked a popular girl and they became friends because he helped her with homework. Then he went to a party she invited him to, and the girl's boyfriend was there and he got mad at him and started rumors about him being gay. So the kid confronted the girl and the girl's boyfriend responded instead of her and said a whole bunch of cruel things and then he went and committed suicide. :|

It was very depressing.

the old phrase "sticks and stones may break my bones ,but names will never hurt me" just does not apply anymore

this so true.

I can tell you right now I remember being verbally insulted seven or eight years ago better than that time I broke my leg or arm last year.

I was made fun of in fourth grade, but luckily it was only one person and the teacher noticed it and so it stopped.

My cousin gets horribly made fun of though.

Bullying wasn't a serious issue here until a few years ago, I think it's worst there in the US. When I was in like 7th grade I was bullied by some girls from the school bus because I'm fat,

I left the school bus and started to used public transportation to go to school but even then they used to shout things at me from the bus when they saw me outside my house. It was very annoying and it hurt me a lot

Fuck, I used to get bullied really bad in first and second grade.... to the point where we had to move out of town.

And when did the teachers notice? Never. I was pushed down the stairs a few times, had my homework and lunch stolen on a daily basis, constantly insulted by my peers and they didn't do shit. In fact they made it worse by bitching at me to suck it up after I had to be sent home because I was pushed. down. the. fucking. stairs. and they didn't even punish the guy that did it.

But I haven't had a problem since then and I'm not nearly as tiny as I used to be. I'm actually somewhat scary and creepy looking now so no one's willing to cause problems with me...

:stunned: Wow. Nick. The fear you strike in the hearts of men.

I tremble.

Cobalt I mostly agree with you except for this statement "There will ALWAYS be people wanting to piss someone off on the internet, trolls, pranksters and the like. It is impossible to completely stop them, it is easy for those people to fake their IPs and addresses and become almost untrackable. You can't completely eradicate it from anywhere, it's pointless trying."

So you're telling me that the Internet will never change? in 200 years it will be the same?? No, it will continue to change and security will be a prime concern during that evolution.

Agreed there is always bullying, always has always will but I think maybe they will try to monitor stuff more which gets out of hand on facebook .
