I Love Obama!

I have nothing against rich people, and I know there are rich people like Bill Gates who have worked very hard for their money, I understand that.

But I have a hypothetical question I want to ask you

The government needs taxes in order to pay for a lot things; education, healthcare, roads, schools, clean water, hospitals, wars, etc…

Even though nobody likes to pay their taxes we all have too because we want all these good things in our country.

So my question is, if the governments needs money to solve these issues and to make our country our a better place, should they get this money from a single mother of three who works three jobs just to feed her kids or should they get this money from someone like Bill Gates.

I am not saying we should take all the money of rich people, but it makes sense to tax someone like Bill Gates more than the poor single mother.

I just think the amount of taxes you pay should be in accordance with the amount of money you make; it doesn’t make sense to tax someone who makes $20,000 a year the same as someone who makes $200,000 a year.

I understand what you're saying, but first of all rich get taxed more than poor already.

It doesn't make sense for the government to tax the rich all that much more though, because if a state taxes a rich person more than a poor person, the rich person will move away. Where do you think the state gets more money from, the 20% that are rich or the 80% that are poor? You need rich and poor people for taxes to work.

/ends rant.

I never realised how many politically conservative there was on here! Still makes a change from hard line lecture shouting their wank arguments off

I'm neither a republican nor democrat. Even this past week I changed my party from Independence to "I Do Not Wish to Affiliate Myself With a Party", because neither party is right and has a lot of flaws.

But I would have to say that I am fiscally conservative (want to not have the government spend as much money and control so much), but socially liberal (for equal rights, stem cell research, etc.)

When Bush got into office he cut the taxes for the rich, and Obama increased them by a little bit. So at the end of the day, the rich don't pay a lot of taxes.

I also think it is disgusting that Obama bails out all these stupid companies, both him and Bush waste a lot of money

but my question is just this, if the Government needs money where should they get it from?

China. that's where they've been getting some of it, at least.

well of course they're going to get them from taxes, and as mentioned above China buys our debt. But one day they'll come knocking on our door, and then they'll be in control.

Bottom line... they need to stop spending! It's only making our situation even worse. These government officials need to be fiscally responsible, and stop putting shit in all these bills. If you make a bill, pass it for what it's worth, but don't start adding in funding to see if bees can remember where their nest is when under drug testing, or whatever stupid things they add into bills. Like the health care bill

I just personally find it kind of funny how people were so for Obama because they hated how much Bush was spending, when in fact by Obama being a democrat it's kind of a given he's going to be spending a lot and in this case so many times more than Bush.

Maybe they don't pay enough for you but your argument was that rich people should get taxed more, and they do.

In the UK we have the National Health Service and IMO its one of the best things to come out of the socialist ideal, taxes mean we can give free healthcare to all, now isn't that something to be proud of?

so you don't agree with universal health care

In Canada we have universal health care and it's honestly one of the best things about this country.

me likes your puppy :wacky:

I totally agree. With a government that spends too much society begins to become overly dependent on the state. Apparently to some the government should be accountable to everything. There is no emphasis on the importance of individualism.

Oh and the_gloaming your principles sound close to 'third way' thinking

I think the idea is nice, but no... I don't think that everyone should have the exact same healthcare plan. Make it more affordable so people can pay for it... but let people choose what they want... don't make them do it.

what does that mean exactly? like a 3rd party?

It's like a dysfunctional marriage.

do you know that in the US 20% of the population controls 80% of the wealth, that is absolutely disgusting

lol, is it?

what does that mean exactly? like a 3rd party?

It takes the thinking of right wing economic policies mixed with social left wing policies creating a very centrist ideology. Your position sounds similar, to me at least, to that way of thinking however it was an ideology adopted by both Tony Blair and Bill Clinton for the Labour Party and Democrats so I don't know if that's who you would like to be associated with.

Check out the sociologist Anthony Giddens if you want to learn more about it. He's a major thinker who believes in Third Way.

Health care used to be affordable back in the 50's and 60's. The poor and rich alike had about the same mount of doctor visits and treatment. As government got more involved in the last 50 years or so more money flows into that sector raising prices.

Also they limit people from buying insurance from other states and even other countries which raises prices. Less competition means higher prices. If we could buy insurance from anywhere we'd go from a few options to hundreds, forcing competition and lower prices. Same is true for prescription drugs. Our government won't let us buy them cheaper from Europe or Canada, supporting the artificial high prices that THEY complain about. Government likes to create problems(laws preventing competition, thus lower prices) then claims the only solution is to give them more money and power.

If we allow competition and cut the money out from government that flows into that sector prices will drop and stabilize. If we had a system that worked well before, would it not be logical to go back to it? This isn't some theory, this was how it was many years ago when the poor and almost everyone had the same level of treatment.
