No you don't!

And even if you did, English isn't your first language, so it's understandable.

Suggestion for new text under Cresty's screen name: Grammar nazi in a perfectionistic world

Maybe now the text is too long.

:awesome:

Just tell them you're an englishmatician!

Ahhh I hate this too! Dunno why I'm only seeing this thread for the first time, but yes I really hate it when people mix up your and you're, or don't even bother to try to use the correct one.

I do know the difference, but I still make that mistake when I type in a hurry or something ... I also tend to switch they're and their from time to time ... although I know the difference ... but hey, I'm not a native speaker after all.

This one is one of my other grammar pet peeves. It's understandable that you would mix them up from time to time, since English isn't your first language I can understand forgetting, but people who speak English as their first or main language really should know the difference or pay attention cause not only do they tend to mix up "they're" and "their," I've seen "there" used for both of those before.

And I really dislike when people can't do the whole "me and you" or "you and I" thing correctly. The rule for it is really simple, and if you TRY to be correct it doesn't take long before it becomes so familiar that you don't even really need to think of the rule. You'll just know because it sounds incorrect.

What the fuck does it matter

dont be a grammar nazi

a lack of an apostrophe when typing a quick reply will not make the sentence unintelligable for turds sake.

...Oh sorry I mean for turd's sake.

Well duh, obviously it doesn't make what you're trying to communicate impossible to understand.

It makes you seem uneducated or ignorant, especially when it's really not hard to be correct in these simple little grammar rules. What, it takes -1 millisecond to add an apostrophe, don't be a lazy ass.

AND if you're talking to someone who doesn't speak English as their first language but can understand it relatively decently, it just might be confusing because they DO have different meanings.

Now, in informal situations like on the internet it doesn't annoy me as much, but people make these mistakes formally too. And really even in informal settings it's not hard to just... do it correctly.

Also it's better to just go ahead and use correct grammar, especially when typing, cause it's good practice for when you have to have a job or something.

This post is wonderful:

It's so basic that also foreigners should know the difference between "you're" and "your"

Other ones that annoy me: "were", "where" and "we're"

"there", "they're" and "their"

"to" and "too"

"it's" and "its"

"im" (I mean ... WTF??)

"then" and "than" (all tough this one isn't that bad as the others and I don't blame foreigners for not getting this one right)

Love this thread, btw :)

There's a nice comic about "alot": http://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/04/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Hyperbole-and-a-half+%28Hyperbole-And-A-Half%29

Another one that I just thought of is when people say stuff like "must of" instead of the correct "must have." There are other examples of mistakes really similar to that but I can't think of the other ones at the moment.

Hmmm

good point about the non-English-first-language-speaking people.

Buuuuutt

I hardly count this forum as a formal situation.

So it's fine if you're writing a paper or something and your teacher busts your chops

but on here...or youtube... or FB....like it really matters.

That's why I said it doesn't annoy me as much on the internet.

But another thing to keep in mind is that it could possibly be used against someone to insult their intelligence. I actually did that on YouTube earlier today....:blank:

usually when arguing with someone ...

when they have to deflect to knit picking my grammar or spelling (im referring to small mistakes here) ..... thats how I know Im winning

It tells me they have no further valid points to argue so they've resorted to either personal attacks ...."you are a blah blah blahjkjbj"

or they pick at my grammar/typo.

^ ahahaha, that's actually true. Picking on grammar is usually an invalid argument, hahaha.

True, but abbreviating "YOU ARE" without an apostrophe would be YOURE. If you're using YOUR for YOU'RE instead of YOURE when having "a lack of an apostrophe", that's just plain using the wrong thing/confusing it.

And if one is writing something to "Dear Chris Martin", I imagine one would want to do it right so he thinks they are smart

that's a good point really. I mean, I like when people writes in the right way because I'm still learning, but picking at someone else's grammar if you are having a discussion is lame.

Nonsense

Chris isnt reading that thread...

....well for fuck sake I hope not :stunned:

and ok, correction "lack of apostrophe and letter E"

Oh my god I hate it when people are like "I seen him".

Earlier I saw a comment on FB where your was used instead of you're. :dozey:

And, she's a teacher!!!

(and yes I have a bad habit of starting a sentence with and. :whip:)

That bothers me so much. :bomb:

I have the utmost respect for anyone who's native tongue is not English, as they're doing a great job and little grammatical errors really aren't that important, but for English/American people it's so obnoxious;

I think the people on here from non english speaking (or not as a first language anyway) countries do an amazing job!

I want some english lessons, I wonder how they teach the language here. I always feel very insecure when I want to write long ideas here :shame:

Imkella your spanish will be perfect and you'll even learn how to swear in chilean spanish :P

Fourth? :o

I've always thought your english was very good. :)

I actually had to delete someone from FB because I just couldn't stand all of the spelling mistakes in her frequently updated status.

Yes I'm a bitch. :blank:

Seriously, blatantly obvious ones, to the point where sometimes I had trouble deciphering it.

For fuck's sake people, what you post on FB is there for everyone to see - CHECK YOUR SPELLING!!!
