Coldplay and Corey Taylor (Slipknot) release Christmas singles

 

Every year around this time there’s an onslaught of Christmas singles that come crashing onto our iPod playlists. ‘Tis the season to have artists like Mariah Carey blasting; we wouldn’t be caught dead listening to her in any other setting than a winter wonderland. You’ve got to appreciate the effort an artist puts in for a song that will only get played for a few weeks and then probably be forgotten forever. That’s why this week we’ve put Slipknot’s Corey Taylor beside Coldplay.

 

It’s hard to tell if either track will have the longevity to become as classic as John Denver and the Muppets’ A Christmas Together but they’re certainly in the running.

 

Don’t let the juvenile title of Taylor’s "X-M@$" fool you. The upbeat southern jingle gets the blood flowing like the whiskey-soaked lyrics, and the rocking guitars remind us of a heavier version of “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer”. While it’s not for cocoa sipping by the fire, it’s perfect for the inevitable work party inebriation.

 

Coldplay’s “Christmas Lights” is the polar opposite to Taylor’s tune. It’s an epic heartbreaker with pretty piano accompanying Chris Martin’s crooning. If you’re feeling like a sad sack around Christmas, this sets the perfect tone. It also has the potential to be New Year’s Eve toast-worthy with the “Auld Lang Syne” sound at the end and the closing fireworks.

 

Sure, neither song comes close to the rocking cover of “Little Saint Nick” by Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem or the heartwarming rendition of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” by Rowlf the Dog and Denver, but now that Jim Henson’s dead what can?

There's a huge facebook campaign to get this to no.1 and given its release date of 12th December and all proceeds to Teenage Cancer Trust its in with a shout.

 

Just imagine grandma in the family rocking chair and an iPod docking station on Christmas night singing to those lyrics with a whiskey shot and a paper hat! :laugh3:
