Pitchfork: Albums of the Year 2010

Featured Replies

I'm interested to see where The Suburbs is placed. I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't make the top 10.

If there is any justice it won't.

Pitchfork?

I might as well ask Mr MacGill the old age pensioner down the road for his albums of the year.

Fuck Pitchfork.

Exactly. The album is good but The National's High Violet and Arcade Fire's The Suburbs are much betterr!!!

SO true.

^^^ I believe that list in the spoiler tags is merely by release date, not order of greatness. Though I agree with you regardless.

I predict Contra and The Suburbs won't make the Top 10, though. Just have a feeling.

I'd expect to see Big Boi and Ariel Pink near the top. Don't care for either, but whatever.

-looks at list-

HAHA, that makes a LOT more sense.

"The Suburbs" not making the top 10? Seriously?

Ewww. I tried listening to Ariel Pink. They're quite terrible. IMO, anyway.

I still think a part of the reason why pitchfork/everyone likes Ariel Pink is because they used to be extremely lo fi (some songs pretty much unlistenable) and then they makes this extremely professional sounding album.

Anyway, I quite like them. (and I'm seeing them next year)

Well, good for you. Our tastes are pretty different, though, in some cases.

-siiiiigh- I had a feeling that would come up sooner or later.

I love you.

SHUT UP EDDIE I HATE YOU.

That album like scarred me for life, okay? :disappointed:

I also love you, cause you love Four Tet.

I HAVE NOW LISTENED TO CHRISTMAS LIGHTS. IT'S PLAYING ON ONE OF THOSE RADIOISH CHANNELS ON TV.

It's okay.

I've only listened to that one album. I like Bright Lit Blue Skies off of it, actually.

One Life Stand didn't really make an impression on me. I mean, it has a few good songs but the album as a whole is just.. pretty hm. But that probably got something to do with that I was extremely underwhelmed when I went to see Hot Chip play live.

I got bored of Hot Chip pretty quickly.

Also just added a list all the albums that received a rating between 10.0 and 8.5. , in order of rating.

I looked at the list before I went to bed at 2am. Then I dreamt of Joanna Newsom last night. [/nice dream]

This is going to sound like a stupid question to some of you, but what is so awesome about Kanye's album that warrants it to be the #1 album this year? It's not that I don't like it, because I do. I just feel like other albums were better.

It came out close to when voting for year end lists was due...and I think the hype and circumstances have kind of skewed its rankings. It is no. 12 on my list.

Ahhh. Fair enough, Briggs. You are a wise man.

It's a very good question. I'm probably not in the best position to answer it but I will try anyway. It's not my favourite album of the year but I think it has thoroughly deserved it's position. I would find it hard to think of any other album taking the spot to be fair, despite my own list being variably different. The fact is, the album had a lot going for it long before it was released. If you were following Kanye beforehand, you would've seen the songs he released every Friday, the controversy of other matters, the Runaway video, the collaboration album just to name a few. The album really, is just the icing on the cake. The culmination of all these great things he has been doing released as a record. And for a record, it is very diverse. But when you think about it, sure lots of albums have had great music on them this year, but not all albums have had the huge backline story that goes behind them, the amount of hype, the amount of critic success and the amount of support that Kanye's has. Everything from the offensive album artwork to the amount of collaborates was calculated. That is the very reason why Kanye's album deserves the number one position. At least in my eyes anyway.

That may all be true. However, I think the one thing that really matters is the music itself. I don't care about all the hype or what other people say. I've went and got albums that other people have hyped up and been highly disappointed. I merely go by what my ears tell me, and that's what should matter more than anything. Kanye's album is fine, but it's not the best I've heard this year, in my opinion.
