BYU suspends basketball player for having consentual sex

Featured Replies

Brigham Young University basketball player Brandon Davies has been suspended from the team for the rest of the season for the most personal of fouls: He had sex with his girlfriend, breaking the Mormon's school's honor code.

Davies admitted to the school that he violated the school's ban on premarital sex on Monday, sources close to the team told the Salt Lake Tribune.

The Cougars, ranked third in the nation, were stunned by the news of the 6-foot-9 sophomore forward's dismissal.

"It was a surprise to everyone," coach Dave Rose said. Asked if thought Davies would play again, the coach said, "Yeah, I do."

One of the sources told the paper Davies was "extremely remorseful, heartbroken."

The school announced on Wednesday that Davies was suspended, only saying his violation was not anything criminal.

"Everybody who comes to BYU, every student if they're an athlete or not an athlete, they make a commitment when they come," Rose said. "A lot of people try to judge if this is right or wrong, but it's a commitment they make. It's not about right or wrong. It's about commitment."

BYU's honor code bans students from drinking alcohol and coffee. Students are also expected to be honest and regularly attend church services.

The team's best player, Jimmer Fredette recounted Davies' apology.

"He told us everything. He told us he was sorry and that he let us down," Fredette said.

Following BYU's crushing 82-64 loss to New Mexico, Fredette tried to remain positive.

"(Davies) was like a brother to us, family. It's tough to lose a guy like that and pull together. I think we'll be all right."

Oh and the funniest part is that he's a key player for them and they were expected to possibly even win the national championship (their record is 27-3 at the moment).

I bet he's regretting going to that school now. He knew the rules, he broke them, and the school is sticking to their policy.

I think the rule's stupid, but he did know what he was getting himself into when he signed up, so he only has himself to blame.

Well, they look to be a private university. Meaning they can pick and choose as they please and do what they want.

I think this is a little harsh personally, but as I said... private university, they can make rules as they please and enforce them in such a way as they please.

Pretty much, yes. Don't sign up to the rules if you don't agree with them.

It's a fucking shame that someone has to be 'remorseful' about having sex. Especially if that was his virginity.

What a stupid rule... at that age of course people are going to break it

Maybe I should add this to my religion thread

Well yes. It's famous in the US for being extremely conservative. It's a Mormon school, so no alcohol, no drugs, not even coffee. It's a real shame. I'd totally go there, as it has one of the best business schools in the country, yet I couldn't bare living under such a strict set of rules.

^yeah. I have a friend online who's family is mormon (he doesn't follow them), but their rules are ridiculous. To me it's just another way to control peoples way of life.

Those.

Agreed.

My ex was a Mormon (lapsed I hasten to add, otherwise it simply wouldn't have worked - her family were still true to the church). They have some bullshit dogma's forced on them.

The men are expected to go on Missions as young adults and spend a year or two spreading the word of the lord. During this time they are not allowed contact with their family except for a letter at xmas or their birthday (it's one or the other, I can't remember which). How this is healthy I have no idea.

I have extended family who are Mormons, so I know about this. My second cousin is on his two-year stint right now.

that stuff is fucked up.

People wasting their lives over a religion that was made up from some guy in the middle of the country.

If you think the Mormons are bad, you should check out the Amish. It's ridiculous.

I don't see how anyone can devote their life or livelihood to religion. Why not just enjoy life to the fullest? I mean imagine how much it would suck (though when your dead you wouldn't know it), that you wasted your whole life following something, giving up opportunities o a think that was just BS... I think that'd be terrible.

I remember learning about it in one of my English classes back when I was in high school, or something like that. I'm surprised I retained that information after all that time.

and what happend to the GF? was she punnished too? Is this the religion that condones mulitiple wives? so you go thru life denying yourself and then the guy can have as many wives as he wants? no thank you.I assume they also don't believe in homosexuality, gee thats going to be a problem.

but this is America and there is freedom of religion and he did know what he was getting into but when you confess your sins arent you suppposed to be forgiven? but he knew the insane rules, they just set him up for failure, but he is only human. I cannot see any upside of this religion

The multiple wives was a couple of centuries ago, when the Mormon church lost a large percentage of it's male personnel through war. It was set up to repopulate the church and was gotten rid of once the numbers picked up again.

Brandon Flowers is mormon. :awesome:

Anyway, I have no sympathy for the basketball player. By going to the school, he is accepting their rules. Especially since it's a private school.

Their reasoning:

Pascal's Wager

I was familiar with this already but my statistics teacher actually used Pascal's Wager as an example probability question last semester. :|

thanks Braddock!

has anyone seen the show "Big Love?" i swear i was not going to watch it b/c i was turned off bu the premise but the show is very interesting even though i do not agree with what the characters believe in, and its just a tv show

And showbiz is right, he knew the rules but it seems so drastic that the whole team has to suffer, yikes!
