Ever been burgled?

Featured Replies

So in the very early hours of this morning I had to experience the immense displeasure of my flat being burgled. They took my laptop as well as other valuable items all while I slept. I had heard slight noises but it was only when I saw a light shining through the bottom of my door that I realised something wasn't right seeing as I had switched all the lights off before I went to bed. Went through to notice it was the living room light on as well as my front door fully ajar and then realising that the possessions had gone. Understandably I was deeply shocked and very unsettled. Has anyone else had their property broken into and how did you feel about it?

So sorry to hear that it happened to you. Hopefully they'll find them soon.

I know what it's like. Last year a guy came to my house and robbed my 13-year-old brother at gunpoint. He wanted money, but my brother didn't have any so he stole a Wii, some games, and my other brother's ipod. I was upstairs and so was my other brother, so we didn't know what was going on. I actually heard the guy come to the door and heard him talking loudly but I had no idea it was a guy with a gun and that we were being robbed. It was scary. Also my dad was at work and we weren't able to get ahold of him. The guy was caught a few days later after he tried to sell my brother's ipod to a gamestore, because the person working there, who apparently knew my brother, checked it and saw that the facebook account on the ipod was my brother's (and his status said something about having just been robbed) and he called the police.

Wow, I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been very unsettling to realize that it happened while you were there.

I've never had my home broken into, but several years ago someone stole my car. I was working at a shopping mall, and after we closed I went into the parking lot and it was just plain gone. Not even any broken glass on the ground where my car was. It was an older car, a 1985 Buick Regal Limited, but it was sentimental because it was passed down from my grandparents (my grandpa worked in the factory where it was built). It was a little scary though to know that whoever stole it now had our address from the info in the glove compartment (I was still living with my parents at the time). It was a pain because I had no choice but to go buy another car that weekend, which was quite a financial strain given that I was only working part-time.

But we got a phone call almost exactly one month later, the police found the car. Of course at that point it didn't do much good, because it's not like I could return the new car. So we went to the impound lot where the police took it, and looked to see if there was anything of value still inside. The outside was a bit banged up, I guess when the police were trying to pull them over they gave chase and ran into some things along the way. We opened up the trunk and saw they removed my softball equipment and added a few items of their own... big ol' speakers, several knives, a hatchet, a cleaver, etc. :freak: I'm not sure why the police didn't confiscate those.

Anyway, the whole experience was a bit traumatic. I felt a bit violated I suppose. I couldn't get much sleep the first few nights afterward.

sorry to hear of the burglary, not nice

I was the victim of card fraud a couple of weeks ago, violated in a different sense, although the end result of loss in financial terms is the same.

^^^Kels that is awful about your brother D:

We had a quad bike stolen along with my dad's old trials bike which he didn't have insured, it was weird that my dog never barked because it usually barks it's head off if it sees a cat.

someone stole my pencil in graphics yesterday

seriously

it sucked

Those are really special ones (for graphics), they can be kind of expensive, right?

I am really sorry for you, I imagine be very angry :(

When I was a student, I lived in an apartment rented by the school.

It was not a quiet neighborhood.

but lucky I was not in apart but at school.

people broke down the door and destroyed everything, searched.

they found nothing of value.

also, people try to steal the car of my father. broke the front door, but the car was blocked by the wheel.

I am really sorry this has happend to you. It happend to me as a kid and scared me for years. I was never able to sleep at night propley if the lights where left on in a room I was not in. When I grew up, and had my own place I often used to sleep in the living room to stop this, in the end I inherited a dog whom always used to bark.

Its really sad someone will go in to your space and do this.

It happend to me again many years later, but this time I was woken up by the theif whom I knew, for some strange reason I was not shocked, I was really tempted to tell the police who it was. I could not do this due to the area I was living in. In the end I heard he got his pay back for other crimes he commited.

Sorry that happened to you, I've never had someone break into where I live, but have had something stolen before.

One time when I was in HS I gave my brother my mp3 player because I had class and he had study hall. So in the middle of class we had a fire drill and everyone left the building of course. So when my brother returned from study hall the mp3 player was gone. Apparently he (for some stupid reason) just left it on top of his books (in plain site), so someone obviously took it.

needless to say I was pretty pissed off when I found out...haha

:( scary

i was burgled 2 or 3 times when I was a student.

Was half way through a history essay on my laptop as well! Thankfully got an extension to the deadline. I'm typing this on an iPod touch!

ugh.. sorry :(

I'm always paranoid about it even if I've never been burgled. Well, once but I didn't see the guy so it wasn't that bad I guess, he just opened my backback and took my phone

what a nightmare! both to losing the essay and to typing on an ipod touch

think the worst thing about being burgled the first time was that, although they hadn't taken anything, they'd pulled everything out of the drawers and wardrobes and you knew they'd been touched things.

plus that horrible fingerprint stuff which took hours to clean up afterwards.

the second time, the nasty thing was we were all in the house and they'd climbed in the kitchen window. (it was a new double-glazing one which was very tall and opened outwards with no restraints - so you could climb in or out of them)

the only useful thing about that was the police said that the windows were extremely insecure, which negated one of the points when the uni tried to withold our deposits.

I got a new lock on my front door fitted this morning. Where there was no sign of damage on the outside of the lock which made us presume that either we'd left the door unlocked or the burglar had got hold of the master key owned by the factor. However when the lock was removed there was clear internal damage of the lock so it appears to be forced entry. The locksmith was scathing of the lock saying it was well below British standards and could easily be broken into within seconds by someone with enough knowledge. But he said how are people supposed to know these things. You presume your locks are safe enough especially for a front door but you may be surprised at how little protection they actually give.

That's pretty much what the locksmith that we hired said. We had our doorknobs/locks changed when we first moved in, plus had dead bolts added on all the outside doors. And not all dead bolts are created equal, they need to go far enough into the door frame otherwise they are worthless. And just having them acts as a huge deterrent anyway; our neighbors still have their original crappy doorknobs/locks and never added deadbolts, so if a burglar came into our neighborhood they would go for those houses and not even bother messing with ours (they would waste too much time trying to get in).

Great news. I'm typing this on my once stolen laptop! The police retrieved it last week from a garden (do not know how) where the burglar must have abandoned. I collected it today and was thrilled that it was fully functioning and now back in my possession!

lucky! and wahey! :0) was it in time to get your essay handed in or did you still have to re-write?

Still had to re write. Slogged it out in the library but I got it done!

I lost my keys once.

I found them a few hours later with the keyrings stolen off them :dozey:

Okay, that's not be burgled but it's the closest I've been to it so far.

I'm sorry this happened to you, must have been so scary.

The police actually came to check the doors of all student houses in my area when I was in first year. They told us that our door wasn't safe and that the locks needed replacing but the landlord didn't do anything about it. This was two months before we all moved out, still it shouldn't really take him more than two months to change the locks.

Btw I'm pretty confident that most student landlords don't change the locks when new people move in, which I find rather worrying.

Well that's the thing isn't it. Landlords or block owners will always do it on the cheapest materials. With landlords like yours they feel it's more important to put their financial interests ahead of your security which is shameful.
