concert encores

Featured Replies

Have they completely lost their meaning/ambiance/whatever?

It used to be something special, but now concert attendees just expect it. And since people expect it, the musicians just plan to do it anyway and it's essentially in the setlist.

It just seems like it's to the point where it's a bit of a charade. Or something.

Thoughts?

I think as you mentioned they are sort of expected. Though I have been to a few shows where an aritst didn't do any encore (mainly opening bands, but also a headliner like Explosions in the Sky). I can see how it's a bit of a charade, but I think it kind of adds to a show even though it's planned. Like you are put through the experience of a full live concert that it's nice to get a break from it, but also build up some hype and excitement to see the band again.

edit: also the tags for the thread are funny

aww I was hoping it would take longer for someone to notice

when i saw Laura Marling she said this near the end of her set "if you want an encore then this is my last song if you don't want one then this the second last song"

i love her :embarrassed:

it's just boring when bands don't change their setlist (yes coldplay, I'm looking at you ) but yeah, like Mike said, it's nice to have a break to calm down a bit and then start the music again

I think that, even though everyone expects them to happen by now at almost every concert, it is still something that gets people excited at the end ( kinda like the fireworks :P) I speak for myself, but generally when going to a concert of a band/artist you like, you don't want it to end and this gives you the illusion that you are getting those extra minutes while keeping you aware that this time the "goodbyes" are for real. Plus, some artists generaly change the songs they perform during the encore and it is always a bit of a surprise when you don't know what songs you will get to hear.

THIS!!

but sooooo very few bands do it. like if they do 20 songs in a night, they might change around 4 or 5 but the rest will always be the same. its ok when they have 2 or 3 albums only. but when u go to see a band with 5 or more albums u really should expect the unexpected. everyone should be like pearl jam!

^I agree with you and Lore... one thing that really annoys me is when bands/artists play the same setlist over and over. It makes it too predictable. To be honest bands that play the same setlists make me less likely to see them live multiple times because it's not much of a surprise. That's why I loved seeing Radiohead live is because you really had no idea what song was next.

while on the topic of live music. could someone please explain to me why well known musicians do DJ sets at festivals and charity events and the like. i don't see the appeal in watching someone play their favourite songs no matter how much i like them. they're musicians for crying out loud! their job is to perform music. leave the button pushing to the talentless lads (and ladettes) in over sized headphones.

mmm yeah the only interesting thing about DJ sets is to check out what music they like but it's nothing that special anyway. I've been only in 1 famous artist DJ set (Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand) while it was a pretty fun party I'd rather be in a concert of course.

He played LCD Soundsystem and The Strokes songs though :dazzled:

god the sufjan encore was so awkward

massive party with balloons and confetti and everyone dancing at the end of Impossible Soul, then they leave stage, everyone still standing and playing with the balloons, then sufjan comes on and does an extremely quiet version of that UFO piano song :(

also, loving the tags

I don't think so! The encore could be that one song you thought they weren't gonna play.

The concerts of bands bored me and no more interest me or is bitchy or is drama or is fake in front the people .

could you give me an example? almost invariably the encores are made of the bands biggest songs.

I'm not saying it always happens but it could...

But I do get the OP. The encore isn't a surprise anymore and it is almost always included in the set list these days. But people still yell and chant "encore" at the end just in case, I suppose.

The best is the surprise 2nd encore after the lights have gone up, a good couple minutes after the 1st encore.

even 2nd encores are kinda meh if you're doing them at every show.

foo fighters played BBC's Big Weekend this month and they were scheduled for a 1hr televised performance. at the end of the hour they played Everlong and walked off and then came back on and said " we're going to keep playing until they tell us to leave" and went on to perform 3 more songs. now that's an encore!
