Major record distribution warehouse burns down...

The night of rioting and violence that took place across London and other parts of the UK last night (August 8) has even managed to affect indie music.

Alonside the countless shops, homes and personal property that was trashed or set alight, the Sony DADC warehouse in Enfield was burnt to the ground in the early hours.

The building houses stick from the PIAS group of labels, one of the biggest distributors of indie product in the UK, including the Beggars Group, XL Recordings, Domino, Wall Of Sound, Warp, B Unique, Deceptive, Fabric, Faith And Hope, Kitsune, Mute, Memphis Industry, Rough Trade, Setanta, Soul Jazz and dozens more.

The company said: "PIAS is working closely with SonyDADC who are implementing their emergency plans. PIAS's UK offices in London and all other areas of our business are unaffected. More information will be communicated shortly to all our labels and partners."

Artists potentially affected include Adele, Beirut, Mogwai, The Strokes, The xx, Thom Yorke, The Horrors, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys, Franz Ferdinand and countless other smaller artists, whose careers rely on the distribution network. It's thought that the Sunday Best, Chemikal Underground and Rock Action labels have been heavily affected, meaning stock by Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip and Mogwai could be lost.

Charlie Simpson, whose debut solo album Young Pilgrim could be hit by the fire said, "I'm very upset and frustrated to hear that the PIAS distribution warehouse was burnt down last night. PIAS are a champion for independent artists and music, I'm proud to be part of them. We will support them in any way possible through this difficult time. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people that have had their families, homes and businesses affected by this terrible situation."

Meanwhile, the clean-up of London has started, with an official group, #riotcleanupuk, tackling one of the biggest trouble hotspots at Clapham Junction at 1pm today (August 9). Kate Nash tweeted: "Heading to clapham now. Everyone meeting there at 1.00. Got my bin bags, need to find gloves."

When the looting hit Camden Town late last night, it was feared that both the Electric Ballroom and Roundhouse venues had been trashed, but in the event only the Electric Ballroom had received some slight damage.

16,000 police officers are expected on the streets of London tonight, while the government hold crisis talks.

Wow. I don't think there's a more important label around. Crazy when you think about the amount of music that was stored there.

Luckily the Electric Ballroom and the wonderful Roundhouse didn't get trashed!

^Agreed. Even The Bakery and The Beehive are near! :uhoh:

:worried: those news make me really angry :disappointed:

What the hell is going on over there?

Just mindless violence. Nothing to do with politics or anything. They're just doing it because they want to. It was sparked by events in Tottenham North London on Saturday night when a protest against a man being shot dead turned violent. Since then the riots have had nothing to do with the protest from Saturday. These thugs just see it as an excuse to cause trouble. Massive social problems revealed in the UK though.

And now this :bigcry:

Liam Gallagher's Pretty Green clothes store looted in Manchester riots

Beady Eye man's fashion boutique targeted by rioters

"Liam Gallagher's clothes store, Pretty Green, has been ransacked by looters during tonight's (July 9) riots in Manchester.

The store, which only opened on King Street in December last year, had its windows smashed and stock taken."

WTF is wrong with these people? Are they gonna burn the whole city down in their retarded behaviour or what? I was seriously fuming this morning when I read the newspaper and saw pictures of all the beautiful old buildings burnt to the ground

THIS!

My mom was like "the police should kick their asses more!!", and they were stealing from small stores and local shops, they were basically stealing from people that have nothing to do with whatever is happening! They are like animals!! :bomb: I saw this video where a kid got hurt and two guys went to "help" him, but then they started opening the kid's bag and stealing from him, I was so angry!

I don't even know what to say, why burn down a warehouse full of music, why trash and loot so many people's places, what's the sense in it? Senseless. Sad.

Mindless violence never is mindless, there's something afoot. Youths who feel dispossessed or abandoned somehow, lack self-esteem building experiences, outlets for free exercise, positive outlets for fun and creativity - there's usually something missing. Where are their parents? - either both parents are too busy working, or the closing of the youth clubs was all these kids had going in life that filled the void, or something. They / we all need positive outlets for energy, self-esteem boosting, something to give them a boost so gangs don't become the only option to be a part of something. Jobs too! One great way to feel better is having some purpose, some work experiences. From the things I was hearing about the reasons for the riots from the kids on the street, they just need something to do, someplace to be with others and to fit in. I remember what happened here when some of the kids I grew up with just roamed around aimlessly, nothing to do, parents could have cared less where they were, and then all sorts of wild ideas started up. Some of it was good activities, but once a bad idea starts in the heads of a gang leader, and then look out. It helps to have cops on the beat who know the neighborhoods, know the neighbors and the young men and women personally, and who care about them, respect them - and can direct them towards healthier outlets in life, but when the youth clubs closed, oh man, what a mistake to cut the budgets of things that are essential for young people's needs for exercise and development, socializing, and entertainment. I dunno - it's maybe more than that, families in trouble, parenting issues, no positive role models, but restless young men can have great families, but it just takes one summer, some frustration, and nothing else to do - it's not always deeper social issues beneath it all.

so basically it still looks like too many cuts in a time of recession to me - not enough jobs, no social clubs open, not enough neighborhood cops on the beat who know and respect the people living there, poor conditions at home - maybe too tight family budgets, and with both parents working, then who's there for the family? Lots of factors, but it could as well be LA when riots erupted in the 80's.. no place is so different from another.

WTF are these people trying to do with all of this??? Seriously.

I saw the riots on the news and it's a horrible thing :( I hope things calm down as soon as possible :\

EDIT: I don't know if this is just for publicity...but it's kind of cool what they're doing http://www.nme.com/news/various-artists/58536

Thousands responded to the call to help clean up the streets. Great community spirit.

I see that! It's really appalling. Good to see communities helping out.

Wow, fantastic!!! That really is great community spirit!

At first, I saw the red bristles, and I thought the Romans had come to restore order!:laugh3: Apparently it's the Britons instead!!

Yeah :(

I was talking to Sam from The Phoenix Foundation today (NZ Band, recently signed to UK label) and he was very upset.
