August 16, 201114 yr I have only recently (in the last year or so) become a fan of Radiohead, before I thought they were really weird and not very accessible, but as my music taste matured, I really enjoy and appreciate their music now...however, I wouldn't think the general public would! Radiohead's early stuff was *fairly* commercial however the vast majority of their music is nothing like 'pop' and you wouldn't hear it on the radio (unlike Coldplay) however they always have the most plays every week on Last.fm and have the most listeners and plays...but yet they are never in the charts... WHY?
August 16, 201114 yr Last.fm is populated by people who aren't into mainstream music. Radiohead is not mainstream music. Also, I think it's because it's a little too 'trippy' for mainstream audiences. I mean, seriously, I don't know many people who would willingly listen to Bloom or Myxomatosis.

Also, I think it's because it's a little too 'trippy' for mainstream audiences. I mean, seriously, I don't know many people who would willingly listen to Bloom or Myxomatosis. Adele, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry are also in the top 10 for the last week, and Lady Gaga is one of the biggest acts on Last.fm....she is mainstream. That's what is so weird...
August 16, 201114 yr Radiohead isn't mainstream in the getting played on the radio all the time sense, but they are pretty mainstream in terms of the amount of people who know about them and listen/buy their music.

Indeed. Also, next year will be Pablo Honey's 20th anniversary and they're still relevant today. Not a lot of bands have that kind of longetivity.

WHY? They may never have topped the singles charts, but most of their albums got to number one in the UK. And Kid A was even a US number one. Also, MTV played their videos A LOT in the The Bends/OK Computer days.
August 16, 201114 yr Back when mtv played good music... Yeah man, I know...last year seems like forever ago. :smug:
August 16, 201114 yr Yeah man, I know...last year seems like forever ago. :smug: Not sure what you mean by last year.. But whenever I'm flipping through channels and come across Mtv playing music its like 90% hip-hop pop stuff
August 16, 201114 yr It's because of their innovation, just look at the time period that OK Computer and Kid A came out. I mean, I could ask the same about Arctic Monkeys. How come people actually listen to that?
August 16, 201114 yr I really don't know why *trollface* And I think they're very popular. Everyone here(not in cping, I mean in this country) is like OMG I LOVE THEM MY FAVORITE SONG IS CREEP :blank:
August 16, 201114 yr Pretty much why briggins said. I consider them to be mainstream in the sense they are a well known and talked about band. But not mainstream in terms of radio play. I think the main reason is because the bends, ok computer and creep were extremely popular for the band overall, and definitely more accessible to listen to. But I guess also since they are innovators they are always talked about too
August 16, 201114 yr Not sure what you mean by last year.. But whenever I'm flipping through channels and come across Mtv playing music its like 90% hip-hop pop stuff Oh haha, I totally misread your post. Somehow I read mtv as "they," and thought you were talking about back when Radiohead played good music. My bad.
August 16, 201114 yr MTV got me into Radiohead and lots of other bands. Such a shame they've become totally irrelevant.
August 16, 201114 yr Oh haha, I totally misread your post. Somehow I read mtv as "they," and thought you were talking about back when Radiohead played good music. My bad. Oh no worries! ....back when MTV played music. hah so true
August 17, 201114 yr Yeah MTV needs to just completely drop the M. The only music channel I watch anymore is Palladia, because music is all they do. BTW Radiohead is the "artist of the month" on Comcast/Xfinity right now, so there's a lot more On Demand stuff than usual. Can't wait to see them on SNL next month.
August 17, 201114 yr i really like Pimp My Ride Not sure what you mean by last year.. But whenever I'm flipping through channels and come across Mtv playing music its like 90% hip-hop pop stuff but that is good music :bigcry:
August 17, 201114 yr but that is good music :bigcry:  I should send you a PM inquiring about your specific tastes, my hubby might have some good non-mainstream recommendations for you.
August 17, 201114 yr Pretty much every band that has a huge following has flirted with the mainstream for at least a moment. That's where the base is built. Creep, High and Dry, Karma Police, and Fake Plastic Trees all had a good run on MTV and radio. When the band goes in a new or different direction, it's just a matter of who follows; however, the name and notoriety have already been established.
August 17, 201114 yr They were like the UK's answer to grunge with Pablo Honey to an extent and Creep was a hit. The Bends got a lot of airplay and had some radio friendly singles, so that's why they're big commercially I think. OK Computer got airplay because it was hyped a lot then the reviews came along and well, people bought it. The same goes for Kid A, but to a more extreme extent. I think their first two albums established them as a mainstream band, but thanks to the fact that their albums after that got such immense praise and hype, they continued to sell well. Making an album as daring as OK Computer, let alone Kid A, would kill many bands commercially.
