[18-May-2012] Coldplay @ Dragao Stadium, Porto, Portugal

You'd think that, wouldn't you? Yeah, Coldplay have always been 90+ as long as I can remember. I've seen acts do shorter AND longer sets, and of course I'd love to see Coldplay play longer too, but look how hard they work in that 90 minutes. They're into their mid-30s now and have to work a little harder to keep in shape. All 4 expend a lot of energy...even that stoic guitarist, lol. I still play 3 and 4 hour gigs, but with set breaks and not near the physical effort they put forth, and I couldn't handle that short 90 minutes, lol.

I don't really buy the shape thing, as there are a lot of older bands known for marathon performances (Springsteen for example.) and the CP boys seem in absolutely phonominal shape these days.

Oh yeah, they're in great shape. They (like those older bands who are still going) train daily on top of travel and media and the gigs. They'll probably be able to do this in their 50s or older if they want. But I don't blame them if they don't want to push themselves any harder. Chris really puts himself out there. He never seems to run out of energy, but you have to limit it at some point if you want to still be doing it in 30 years. Just an opinion though.

EDIT: And to be fair to your point, I know guys in their 50s and 60s who are still doing those 3 and 4 hour gigs too.

possible review coming later from this blog:

I just returned from a wonderful concert, where I did not get drips of rain (as opposed to many hundreds of people) and he brought the coolest band ever.

Tomorrow I'll tell more.

^^it's funny you say that because I just got proof of it.

Found this article with 2 more pictures: http://www.cmjornal.xl.pt/detalhe/noticias/lazer/musica/coldplay-passeiam-no-porto-antes-do-concerto

Translation (I'm sorry if something doesn't make sense but it's 3am here):

Coldplay walk in Porto before the concert

Coldplay took advantage of their stay in Porto to get to know the city. In the last hours before the concert, which takes place this Friday at 20.00 (although the British band only performs at 22.00) at Dragon Stadium, the band walked several blocks in Invicta (=Porto) and even had lunch in the restaurant DOP in Ribeira.

Chris Martin spent the morning resting in the Sheraton Hotel in Boavista, where the band is housed since Thursday. For a few hours, several fans of Coldplay were at the door of that hotel unit - and eventually got autographs and photos with their idols.

Guy Berryman, bassist, brought to Portugal his girlfriend and the two walked together along Avenida da Boavista. The remaining band members - Johnny Buckland, guitarist and Will Champion, drummer - preferred to get to know that area of Ribeira.

And it was right there in the restaurant DOP, where both had lunch. According to the manager of the space, Pedro Paula, "they are very peaceful people and without delusions of superstar." The artists did not have security and came alone. From the menu, they chose simple dishes (fish soup, monkfish and lamb) and did not eat dessert. "Just had coffee and drank water," says Pedro.

By late afternoon, Coldplay left the hotel towards the venue. The CM (=newspaper) thinks the band will leave to Madrid - where they will perform on Sunday - after the concert at the Estadio do Dragao.

EDIT: bigger photo here with more or less the same article: http://www.jn.pt/PaginaInicial/Cultura/Interior.aspx?content_id=2528604&page=1

Just a sweet detail: Phil asked the fans who were outside the hotel waiting for the band if they thought the tickets were too expensive.

Thanks again. It's nice to see they're still as normal as possible. :)

yeah I love that . I know that was a sensationalist article but I guess it was not too bad and we all like to know these little details.

While I don't write my review, I leave my video of Warning Sign here

I really need to sleep now though I still feel the urge to look for anything I can find regarding this concert!

holy shit those are lots of fireworks during MX/HLH! Do they really need that?

Still, I find MX/HLH much better than LiT/VH to open the shows (nothing can beat Politik tho :P)

Shortly before stage time in Porto...

Check out a photo of the crowd from Friday night

news_line.png

Good morning. On Friday night in Porto, Coldplay began the European stadium tour in front of an incredible crowd (whose spirits weren't remotely dampened by the rain). Roadie #42 took this photo shortly before stage time. Click the photo to see/save a bigger version.
