Favourite string sections in non-classical music

Featured Replies

Mine are (amongst others) The Old Mans Back Again by Scott Walker, River Man by Nick Drake and Lime Tree by Bright Eyes.

What are yours?

Does a soundtrack count as non-classical? I would think so, so I'm going to say Sherlocked from the Sherlock soundtrack

If not then I'm just going to throw Exogenesis Symphony's strings out there.

I wish more bands would have stronger strings, they really add a lot to the music.

These spring to mind...

Pretty much anything by Andrew Bird or Owen Pallett. Amiina's solo work and Sigur Ros recordings are great, and B&S have some good ones too. Too impatient to list particulars though.

I like The Universal's string section by Blur alot. Obviously Viva and Paradise...and also obviously Bittersweet Symphony.:)

Other than that there's Sigur Ros and Jonsi, I love how Vampire Weekend with Walcott.

I can't really think of many off the top of my head

Good Luck by Basement Jaxx. If anyone can tell me the technique used at the beginning where the strings scale upwards, that'd be greatly appreciated. :)

fjdsklfj how did I forget Sigur Ros and Jonsi? :bigcry: The string sections for them are always fantastic.

And I agree with It's All Gone Tomorrow.

The second half of Runaway by Kanye West, the whole Urban Hyms by The Verve has some amazing strings such as Bitter Sweet Symphony, also Coldplay ones: Paradise, Viva and Yes, there are a lot but those are special.

Mine are (amongst others) The Old Mans Back Again by Scott Walker, River Man by Nick Drake and Lime Tree by Bright Eyes.

Hahaha oh please, not this song again!

One of my favourites that I can think of now is definitely Vampire Weekend. Like, in the song M79 from 3:30 till the end. That part is so amazing for the strings. And then in Walcott, I absolutely love the part from 1:12 to like 1:50.

Also, of course, Björk "Homogenic" and most of all in "Hunter" when the strings come in at 1:12. No words to describe how amazing that is.
