May 29, 201214 yr Ricky Gervais has defended Coldplay against an apparent "backlash" among certain sections of the public. The Office comedian, a long-time fan of the 'Princess of China' indie band, believes it is impossible to criticise their desire to be successful. Speaking about "straight down the line" bands, he told Q magazine: "Coldplay. There's obviously a backlash against them." While acknowledging that the Mylo Xyloto group are "not the coolest in the world", Gervais insisted that they should be praised for their worldwide acclaim. The 50-year-old added: "When you meet them they're nice, funny, normal people who are trying to be excellent at something. "You can only applaud that. You can dislike their stuff but you can only applaud that attitude, you know?" Frontman Chris Martin made a cameo appearance as himself in the second series of Gervais's BBC Two sitcom Extras in 2006. link

May 29, 201214 yr  Coldplay is indie, apparently. Whodathunk. Lol, and they identify this "indie" band by their song that features a pop star.
May 29, 201214 yr Lol, and they identify this "indie" band by their song that features a pop star. I may sound stupid but, what exactly is an "indie" band?
May 29, 201214 yr I may sound stupid but, what exactly is an "indie" band? A band on an independent label, i.e. a band not signed with a major record label.
May 29, 201214 yr A band on an independent label, i.e. a band not signed with a major record label. Oh I get it
May 30, 201214 yr A band on an independent label, i.e. a band not signed with a major record label. That's the most technically correct meaning, but the term indie has also come to be used for a certain style of music as well. I suspect this is the sense the article intended it, as Coldplay were indeed associated with this style in the earliest stages of their career.

If anything, Coldplay is alternative rock nowadays.
