BBC Radio listeners vote Coldplay set as top Glastonbury moment

Coldplay's 2011 headline appearance has been voted the top Glastonbury moment by BBC Radio listeners.

The 'Fix You' group's performance on the Pyramid Stage beat competition from Radiohead and Blur to top the vote.

The shortlist was compiled by various BBC radio personalities including Nick Grimshaw, Dermot O'Leary and Jo Whiley.

Radiohead and Blur's 2009 Pyramid Stage appearances polled second and third respectively, with Bruce Springsteen's performance of Thunder Road in 2009 coming fourth.

Sets from Stevie Wonder, Jay-Z and Elbow also featured in the top ten.

Whiley - who submitted Coldplay's set - said: "Coldplay at Glastonbury 2011 is my absolute favourite moment.

"Knowing how much it meant to them - to be headlining a festival they grew up with and that they performed at in their infancy as a band - it was probably the biggest, most important gig of their careers and lives.

"Watching it and seeing them absolutely nail it with every song and with the staging and pyrotechnics, creating the most incredible atmosphere for the Glastonbury audience and not putting a foot wrong, or rather laughing when things did go awry.

"It made my heart swell right out of my ribcage. I could not have been happier for them. It was the perfect Pyramid headline set."

Go Jo!!!!!

That show is epic for me. I watch it whenever it comes on Paladia (a cable music station) and I watch it on Youtube if I'm feeling down. Youtube shows the entire experience, from the pre-show commentary with Jo to the little history clip of the band and then another commentator announcing the band, and then of course, Will and Chris' interview after the show. It must be exciting for you in Britain, it's staged like a sporting event here, we don't do that kind of hoopla for a music concert here. Too bad.

Glasto 2011 is a watershed moment for me too. It's the first time I noticed them as a band. It was a totally awesome performance, and I fell completely in love with them from that moment.

So pleased they got the top slot. Thank you Jo for nominating them!

Thanks for the news Tash. :D

Look at the top 3, wow. Just, wow.

This! Although... I don't think Radiohead played Glasto in 2009 :wtf:

This is very well deserved. Apart from the little slip up with UATW it was a perfect performance.

Yeah, they didn't. 2003 and 2011 are the two closest. (And 2003 > 2011.)

Yes and even that part is always great to watch! :awesome:

I love Will's smile when Chris stops the song.

Good morning. It was announced last night that Coldplay's 2011 set on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival has been named the Favourite Glastonbury Moment in a public poll by organised by the BBC. Big thanks to all of you who voted for it. It really was a special night. In the dressing room afterwards, the band celebrated like they'd just won a Cup Final. Which, in a way, they had.

Watched it so much I think I know every single second of the whole show. Revisited it last night as well:)

Coldplay set voted favourite Glastonbury moment

BBC Radio listeners plump for 2011 headline performance

Coldplay's 2011 headline set on the Pyramid Stage has been voted the top Glastonbury moment by BBC Radio listeners.

This saw off competition from Radiohead and Blur's performances in 2003 and 2009 respectively. Listeners were asked to pick a winner from a shortlist made of up favourite moments that were nominated by BBC Radio DJs.

And it seems that the corporation's jocks have relatively short memories; all of the moments came from the past decade, which meant that there were no places on the list for some of the classic Glastonbury performances from earlier eras.

Coldplay's career-spanning set featured songs from all five of their studio albums and closed with an ebullient performance of Every Teardrop is a Waterfall.

BBC Radio's Top 10 Glastonbury moments are below; you can also check out MusicRadar's 10 classic Glastonbury performances since 2002. UK users can enjoy full coverage of this year's festival on the BBC Glastonbury 2013 website.
