10 reasons Coldplay should be more respected than they are

Featured Replies

X&Y was their lowest point in a critics point of view, they got bashed by almost everyone :(

But with VLV as Kingzilla (sorry i don't know your name) said they reputation got up, no one expected a band like coldplay to do such a change, same goes with MX.

I think the main reason a lot of people don't respect them the same way they respect Radiohead and U2 for example (both bands with a lot of haters but people respect them nevertheless) is because no one takes them seriously. and its hard to be taken seriously with songs like paradise and ETIAW and VLV and LIJ.

it wasn't always like this though. back when AROBTTH was released things were very different. I wish they had maintained their core identity.

This. I'm sorry but lately their music has been anything but respect worthy. And yes I know I will get flack for saying so, but it doesn't change the facts.

My name is Chris :D

I think you think too much :p

It's a disease... Therapy only makes it worse

So you are saying that MX doesn't deserve respect is a fact?

Why? Cause it's a different genre? Pop doesn't reserve respect?

interestingly I think X&Y was a very very good album but it didn't meet the expectations I guess. still sounded like Coldplay at least which I'm not insinuating is a good or bad thing its just the way I prefer it.

pop doesn't rally deserve respect because 95% of it is utter crap; specially anything from the last two decades. MX is probably the best pop world could come up with along with a few tracks from pet shop boys, madonna, celine dion, take that, and a few others.

Pop can be good. Adele and Fun. are two of my favorite artists who are considered pop, and I believe they both have a lot of great songs that aren't formulaic billboard crap that we stereotype pop to be.

As to X&Y, everyone thought Coldplay was going to progress from "A Rush" like Radiohead, and they took the more pop-oriented route. In a way, it was better for them as they became the biggest band in the world. If they had made AROBTTH 2.0, then it would have been celebrated.

Are you joking right? Pop is ESSENTIAL, and deserves all the respect in the world.

I don't think that Coldplay are not respected because they're making pop music. Look at Lady Gaga - most mediocre pop as for me, but the fact that she uses outrageous outfits, experiments with her appearance, dance moves, public image etc., etc. makes some people call her "genius". In other words, she pushes boundaries, in some way or other, she's doing something, which perhaps is not totally new (cough..Madonna ripoff...cough), but not regularly seen on stage.

Take Radiohead - they were innovators, they did something, that hasn't been done before. They started new wave in music, to which Coldplay belonged too at the early stages of their career. Again, they were not afraid to push boundaries. To do something new.

Perhaps, that's how "legend" is different from a merely famous artist - "legends" are remembered not for their professional excellence, but rather for this brevity to bring changes and try something new, which sometimes can go terribly wrong.

Coldplay don't experiment that much, that have set their own boundaries. Chris was very vocal about it - they will make music as long as it is about good melodies. And, personally, I respect that. I think that experiments can be subtle and elaborate, and not necessarily straight-into-your-face kind of way ("hey, how about my bare ass on TV, huh, huh?").

I think media (and many other people) see Coldplay playing it safe, not gambling it all, not risking their careers and success to try out something different. That's why when their albums come out, no critics are awe-stricken and thrilled by their boldness. Coldplay is still good music, that's why they get positive reviews for every album, but they are not media's favorites, that's for sure.

Still, I believe in Coldplay's philosophy - that is, to do what you believe in. They follow it, and their music speaks to people of different countries, nationalities, ages, welfare... It certainly is saying something about their music, isn't it? Perhaps, they are not media darlings, but they are "people's band", the band you'd love, if not respect.

Time will put everything into right places. 30 years more of successful career, and Coldplay will take place among such bands as R.E.M., U2, The Rolling Stones and others.

1. Chris Martin is actually quite good with a melody

This is crucial.

But I know many feel that they aren't as good as they used to be and are middle of the road and pretty boring musically. You combine that with huge popularity and that's the problem.

I don't think you guys should care what non fans think. I don't think you should even care what other fans think. If you like them then good stuff.

Find me one band that's been around awhile that doesn't get tagged with the "aren't as good as they used to be" line. I'm not saying that people aren't entitled to their opinion, or that bands never decline, but this line is so grossly over applied, it's lost all meaning IMHO.

Radiohead

Radiohead

Nope they get it too. They're still enormously respected (perhaps the most respected band on the planet), but their post OK Computer work has split opinion, with TKOL being especially divisive. Plus the live reviews for their last tour were very mixed. (Though I should say I hold Radiohead in the highest regard)

Yeah maybe TKOL is one of their lowest points

Foo Fighters then?

Another great band, but they also (and especially Dave Grohl) get a fair amount of flak for being overly "commercial" and increasingly so. Both of those examples started with considerably more credibility (for lack of a better term) than Coldplay ever had, so the criticism isn't as pronounced but IMHO it's there nonetheless. People just like things better when they're new and fresh, and will always judge new releases against their old favorites.

But if Win Butler or Thom Yorke had written the lyric “Those who are dead are not dead, they’re just living in my head“, it would probably be infinitely more celebrated than it is right now, as a Chris Martin lyric. In a way, Coldplay are at a critical disadvantage to the rest of the world before they even release an album, because even if it’s their best work, it still won’t be taken as seriously as “proper bands”.

Writer of this article, you hit it right on the head. Excellent statement, and good read overall.

I have been a bit self-conscious of liking Coldplay over the years. Even when I first discovered them, I mean, the very beginnings of my history with them, I have been told I shouldn't like them. I was 10, I had two songs on my ipod-- Speed of Sound and Talk-- and my brother tells me, "You know Coldplay is for girls right?" Obviously, I wouldn't give a fuck if someone told me this now, but as a 10 year old kid, I was very impressionable. I would blast their music in my room, on car trips, and my dad, amongst others, would say, "Alex, I really don't want to listen to this. All their music sounds the same." It sucked. As a kid, for someone to tell you that your passion sucked, it's terrible. I grew apart from Coldplay-- from music, overall.

Two years later, I'm watching TV and I see that iTunes ad of the band playing Viva la Vida, and I'm like...... OH MY GOD. :shocked2: It was the first time I heard the song. VLVODAAHF will always be my favorite album for how much it meant to me then, and how great it remains to be today. When I tell people my favorite band is Coldplay, they just can't fathom why. lol, I just explain, there's no reason why anything is your 'favorite.' It just is.

And by the way, everyone in my family loves Coldplay now. ;)

Thanks for the compliment but I really suck at writing articles, especially in English.
