Official Spotify data shows that Sheeran's second album 'x' was streamed 430m times by their users in 2014, making up half of his 860m streams in total. It is estimated that 50 million Spotify users listen to over seven billion hours of music in the past 12 months. Arctic Monkeys were the second most popular act in the UK behind Sheeran with Eminem, Sam Smith andColdplay making for an all-male top five. Globally, the most popular artists were Sheeran plus Eminem, Coldplay, Calvin Harris, Sam Smith and Katy Perry. 2014 saw Katy Perry take the crown of most popular female artist on Spotify from Rihanna – who has held the title consecutively for the previous two years. Her single 'Dark Horse' spent 11 weeks at #1 on Spotify’s US Top 50 chart, the longest run at the top of the chart in 2014. She finished ahead of Ariana Grande, Lana Del Rey, Beyoncé and Lorde. Pharrell Williams hit single 'Happy', first released in 2013, was the most streamed track in the world in 2014 on Spotify, with over 260m plays. "Coldplay, whose sixth album Ghost Stories also came out this summer, hold the distinction of being the world’s most streamed group, beating out Imagine Dragons, Maroon 5, OneRepublic, and even One Direction, who shockingly come in fifth, despite an immensely dedicated and young following."
