UK's Christmas No. 1 goes to charity song, not Justin Bieber

Monday, 28 Dec, 2015

Bieber's Love Yourself remains the no. 1 song in Australia, but is no. 4 in the US.

Earlier this week, Justin revealed he was supporting their charity song, and urged fans to buy it.

NHS Choir WIN the Christmas No1 battle after their charity single out-sold Justin Bieber by 31,000 copies in the closest race in six years

The NHS Hospital Choir was formed two years ago to take part in the BBC show "Sing While You Work".

Bieber still claims three positions in the charts with Love Yourself at No 2, Sorry at No 3 and What Do You Mean at No 5.

Physiotherapist Caroline Harbord, 50, who is part of the choir, had previously said that securing a number one would help raise morale in the NHS.

The Official Charts Company said it was the closest Christmas number one race since Rage Against the Machine beat X Factor victor Joe McElderry in 2009.

The NHS Choir, whose single will see all profits go to a number of charities including Carers UK and Mind, had been trailing until Bieber gave them his backing.

Proceeds from the single, made to celebrate

workers, will help several United Kingdom charities.

That came after Bieber wrote on Twitter Wednesday: "So for 1 week it s ok not to be #1. Before we pulled the plug we saw a huge gamble on the NHS Choir so it is likely to be a popular result with punters". The single is a blend of Simon and Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water and Coldplay's Fix You.

The singer's latest record, 25 - which became the fastest 2m-selling album in the United Kingdom - holds the No 1 spot on the official albums chart for a fifth week running
