gai
Coldplay's Chris Martin on how the Hampden fans convinced him the band have a future Chris Martin put frenzied break up rumours to bed after Coldplay blew Hampden away 15 years after they started out in Glasgow. Chris Martin wowed at Hampden Superstar Chris Martin has vowed not to kill off Coldplay. The singer used their spectacular midweek show at Hampden – in front of 55,000 fans – to bury fears he planned to split up the band. Backstage, Chris, 39, said: “I want to tour for the next two years, which is a long time to plan ahead "But I don’t want to miss what’s happening right now. “We’re definitely not going to split up, I don’t think. "We don’t want to do that.” Earlier this year, Martin shocked fans when he announced that Coldplay’s latest No1 album, A Head Full Of Dreams, would be their final record. He said: “I feel Coldplay are really good right now. " But I don’t feel the need to add to anything. “I don’t know how I feel about trying to make people buy more albums.” But the ecstatic reaction from hordes of loyal Scottish fans has convinced Chris – and fellow bandmates Jonny Buckland, Will Champion and Guy Berryman, a Fifer, to carry on. Chris added: “We’re just trying to get through this tour to get on to the next thing. “But we’re treating this as if it’s our last one so we can put everything into it. "If you’ve done your job properly at the end of making an album, you should feel that you’ve nothing left to say. I’m sure we’ll do something but this is the first time I haven’t put any real pressure on us to get back into the studio as soon as possible.” READ MORE: Coldplay produce musical masterclass to create a perfect pitch invasion of powerful vibes at Hampden Coldplay’s gig at Hampden was a triumph. From the first note of the opening song – the album’s title track – they treated fans to a spectacular fireworks display, showered them with confetti fired from cannons and threw hundreds of giant balloons into the crowd. Chris Martin stays true to Scotland All 55,000 punters were given special wristbands with flashing LED lights, giving Hampden the appearance of a gigantic Christmas decoration. The band have come a long way since learning their craft gigging in Scotland in venues such as King Tut’s in Glasgow 15 years ago. Chris has a definite theory about why Scottish fans were among the first to take Coldplay to their hearts. Their close friends Travis were a major inspiration in the early days. “I just think Scottish fans have amazing taste,” said Chris, laughing. “Our songs are very pure and up here people like to sing. “You’ve also got one of the world’s best music festivals in T in the Park and some of the best venues too. "You’ve just got it all. “There is just something in the water. Coldplay have vowed they are not splitting up "Why else do so many great singers come out of Scotland?” Coldplay have performed on some of the most prestigious stages in rock – headlining venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and appearing at the Paralympic Games in London and the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. But none can compare with their headline appearance on February 7 this year at Super Bowl 50 in Santa Clara, California. Chris invited pop superstar pals Beyonce and Bruno Mars to join Coldplay on stage and their spectacular 12-minute performance was watched by a global TV audience of 115.5 million people. He said: “I asked Beyonce and Bruno to be there too and they only happen to be two of the very best dancers in the world. “Bruno said, ‘We should share a moment when all three of us come down to the front of the stage’. “I suddenly thought, ‘I can’t dance’. But I was happy to be representing the large portion of the world who can’t dance but feel like they have to have a go anyway. “Our band is all about one thing –embracing passion and not being afraid of failure. " Whatever you do in life, someone is going to say it’s rubbish.” He added: “Instead of feeling down on myself, I’m trying to re-look at the world differently. " We’re all very lucky to be here. “I’m particularly lucky to have the job I have but it doesn’t make me any more special than anybody else. " It sounds very hippy-ish to say that. But Super Bowl 50 is something we couldn’t have done 15 years ago. " I don’t think we believed in ourselves and weren’t worldly enough to pull it off. “The whole point of our half-time show was to embrace all kinds of music and people.” In 2003, Chris married Hollywood star Gwyneth Paltrow and they had two children, Apple, 12, and Moses, 10. The couple announced their separation – which she famously dubbed “conscious uncoupling” – after 10 years together. He’s made cameo appearances in Shaun Of The Dead, The Simpsons and Bruno. But his most impressive acting role was in Extras – opposite Ricky Gervais andStephen Merchant – in which he shamelessly tried to plug a Coldplay greatest hits album during the filming of a TV appeal for famine relief. “It was good fun to do and a chance to meet some of our heroes,” revealed Chris. “I love Ricky and Simon Pegg from Shaun Of The Dead – and more recently I’ve been doing some filming with James Corden too. I take my hat off to them. “We might actually be releasing a Coldplay greatest hits album soon – so I might have to do a bit of method acting.” link
