MTV is launching a major new series which it bills as the antidote to shows like Pop Idol.

 

Breaking Point will ignore manufactured pop stars and instead focus on real artists trying to get a break.

 

The show will follow A&R executives from Island Records as they tour tiny venues in search of the next Coldplay, reports Media Guardian.

 

There will be no auditions before panels of celebrity judges or public votes in the series, which launches next month.

 

The acts unearthed during the first series include an Irish all-girl group, a Norwegian skate punk band and an American rock act.

 

Breaking Point will follow them acts through meetings with Island's A&R people, recording sessions, video shoots and media interviews, climaxing with the release of their first singles.

 

Chris Sice, MTV UK and Ireland's vice-president of development, said: "Breaking Point is the antidote to the prime time talent contests that have dominated over the past few years.

 

"It's an eye opener for anyone who ever entertained dreams of rock stardom and an entertaining look at the characters behind the hit records."
