Apple Bridesmaid

Ever since leaving drama school 12 years ago, Andrew Lincoln has led a charmed life. The son of a civil engineer, Lincoln – who perhaps wisely dropped his real surname, Clutterbuck – had been out of Rada for less than a year when he won the role of Egg, the day-dreaming law-firm drop-out in BBC2's This Life.

Over two influential series between 1995 and 1996, Amy Jenkins's programme established itself as the era-defining drama of the Ecstasy generation.

Lincoln followed that up with an eye-catching role in Channel 4's Teachers, as the blackboard rebel Simon Casey, a young teacher not averse to joining his pupils for a sneaky smoke behind the bike sheds. "In real life, my brother Richard is a fantastic deputy head teacher," Lincoln grins, "despite my best efforts to ruin his career."

Teachers also enabled Lincoln to launch a career on the other side of the camera, the two episodes he directed earning him a Best New Director nomination at the Baftas. He also ended up marrying the girl who worked for him as a runner, Gael, daughter of Jethro Tull frontman Ian Anderson.

This puts him in a good position to talk about the unusually high production values and emotional intensity of the ITV1 drama Afterlife, which returns this month. Lincoln plays an intellectually arrogant psychologist grieving for his dead son, opposite Lesley Sharp as a psychic with more powers than she is comfortable with.

"I know it sounds like a spooky show about a medium and a sceptic," he says, "but it's really about grief and humanity."

One day he would like to emulate the international success of his best friend and This Life co-star Jack Davenport (who recently appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean) and work on films in America, where his small role as Keira Knightley's unsuccessful suitor in Love, Actually was well received.

It is a measure of This Life's success as a launch-pad that it has taken producer Tony Garnett the best part of a decade to get the five principals – Lincoln, Davenport (Miles), Daniela Nardini (Anna), Amita Dhiri (Milly) and Jason Hughes (Warren) – together again for a one-off swansong to be shown on BBC2 at Christmas.

"When you've got something that is called 'cult', you are ultimately setting yourself up for a fall," says Lincoln. "But I hope people will understand that this is more of a love letter to the fans than us trying to make something profound.

"I don't usually like going back to things, but it was such an instrumental part of our lives and our careers that all of us went, 'Let's have a laugh'. It reminds you where you came from – because we were such fledglings, it's almost like having a college reunion.

"The strength of the show was its nonchalance and ambivalence towards drugs and sex – they were just dealt with as part of the characters' lives. It said so much about a generation by making no judgment on these characters, and the people behind the show really hit a nerve. You see so many hybrids of This Life made now. It's left a great legacy – you can see its DNA in so many other dramas."

No wonder Lincoln is in such a cheerful mood; at the age of 32, his place in television history is already assured. The atmosphere only cools when I ask about reports that Apple Martin – daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin – was a bridesmaid at his wedding. "So was my goddaughter, Amber, and Gael's goddaughter as well – they all looked so beautiful, like three little Munchkins," he says.

"But I would rather not talk about how we met Apple's parents. The privacy laws in this country for megastars like those two guys are not good enough."

Lincoln himself likes to keep a low profile. "The last thing I want is to be on show all the time," he says. "I choose to keep my head down for my own and my family's benefit. I do get recognised if I've got something on TV or in the cinema, but there's something very lovely about being able to walk down the street in Kentish Town and nobody gives a s***."

Little surprise, then, that his favourite actor is the late James Stewart for "his modesty, comic timing and Everyman appeal; I think John Cusack is in a very similar mould. Anyone in the street can relate to them: it's not that airbrushed, testosterone-pumped invention of a human being."

After filming on This Life finishes next month, he plans a "proper honeymoon" in South America, visiting Brazil and trekking along the Inca trail. "My marriage is the best thing that's happened to me," he says. "I function better, and I'm a better actor – more controlled and considered. I went through phases where I was a bit more of a loose cannon, and it blurred things a bit as an actor."

Lincoln hopes for the kind of career longevity achieved by his new father-in-law: the man who brought the flute into rock music. "To have more than 30 years in the business with 30-odd albums is an incredible testament to Ian's talent, work ethic and devotion to the job," he says. "He's a great role model."

Apple Martin Third Place In Cutest Celebrity Kid

Angelina Jolie's adopted son, Maddox, has been voted as the cutest celebrity kid in the US magazine, Life and Style.

The four-year-old, born in Cambodia, came top of the class as the best looking child, beating Sean Preston, the son of Britney Spears and Kevin Federline, into second place. Maddox's cute looks and Mohican haircut meant he was a cut above the competition, though whether siblings Zahara and Shiloh Nouvel challenge him for the mantle of cutest kid in the future remains to be seen.

Third place in the poll went to Apple Martin, the daughter of Coldplay singer Chris Martin and Shakespeare in Love actress Gwyneth Paltrow.

Another British dad who will be proud of the performance of his little one is film director Guy Ritchie, whose son Rocco came fourth, ahead of Julia Roberts' twins, Hazel & Phinnaeus Moder.

James Wilkie Broderick, the son of Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick came eighth, while Catherine Zeta-Jones' Carys crawled into tenth place.

I don't know if this has been mentioned before but I just saw a rerun of Gwyn on Conan O' Brian and she said Apple loved Jay-Z's Black Album. Then Conan asked if Apple recognizes Chris's music and Gwyneth said they were in the car and Fix You came on and when it ended she said "More, more, daddy, more" :)

aewwwww:smug:
