LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
This is my thoughts exactly. Let’s be honest, the majority of the people who are voting for those songs probably don’t have more than a passive interest in Coldplay, just saw the poll and thought “Yep, I love that VLV tune” they more than likely won’t even watch the stream. The band asking for questions and the whole comment section is just people asking them to play Sparks lmao. I don’t use reddit but you could probably ask r/Coldplay to mobilise the troops for Sparks!

Ah I found it now. I’m not trying to be funny mate, but they will play ASFOS and those other songs a lot in the future and there are countless performances of them already. I’d love to hear sparks again live

I think the One Love gig actually sums up everything we have been saying about modern day Coldplay. Compare One Love with The Super Bowl. Chris Martin awkwardly dancing in between Bruno Mars and Beyoncé and becoming the butt of a lot of jokes and memes. Coldplay are just not that sort of group under it all.. As much as Chris Martin might want to try to be. One Love on the other hand, Coldplay performing with LG and singing tunes like Live Forever, DLBIA etc. Despite the beef between Coldplay and Oasis in the past, no one was talking about that.. every one was talking about how great it was to see two titans of British rock coming together to respond to a tragedy. Chris looked in his element, because that’s the type of band Coldplay really are underneath it all. To cut out my rambling my point is more or less, songs like Live Forever, Yellow, DLBIA, Clocks will have people still singing them years and years after they’re released because they have a soul to them that later day Coldplay are completely missing. Hymn For The Weekend might make you a ton of money on the pop charts and be popular for a couple of months but I guarantee you no one will even remember that song in 20 years.

No I was still very young when Parachutes came out, my first exposure to Coldplay was hearing Speed of Sound and Talk on the radio, I went out and bought X&Y and the rest is history. X&Y will always be ‘Coldplay’ to me because that was my first exposure, but no doubt Parachutes and AROBTTH are much better albums.

This is just brilliant. I’d forgotten just how good this band was back then. I don’t care what anyone says but Coldplay in the arobtth era were right up there with the likes of Oasis, Blur, Radiohead any of their contemporaries you care to name. Even the way they carry themselves is so out of sync with the modern band. They’re wearing their own clothes, no stupid outfits, Chris isn’t jumping around like a jack Russell on speed, the focus is not on the laser show or artwork on the instruments etc. It’s all about the music. I don’t know if fame changes you maybe, because back then they were just normal lads only on the cusp of stardom or maybe it’s just because they were young and in their prime..It’s just one of those things I’ll never understand.

The type of collab I’m completely ok with. Back when Coldplay were a real band with real influences, not the “happy pop” group. I’m having one of those Oldplay binges on YouTube today. I haven’t watched videos of Oldplay in a while and it’s really reminded me of just how much this group has strayed from their roots. It’s bittersweet watching videos like this as you see how this amazing band turned into a pop group that released an album like AHFOD.

Opinions differ. I thought it was terrible to be honest, but if that’s the sort of style you like, fair play.

It sort of sucks considering this will probably be the bands best album since Viva and they’re not taking it on tour. Definitely worried we’re going to get AHFOD 2.0 with “the next thing”

Which is a real shame considering AROBTTH was not only produced by Ken Nelson but also mixed by him as well. AROBTTH is undoubtedly Coldplay’s best sounding record (if you listen to the stems you understand just how beautifully it was done) I wish they never had that falling out, the band you see today would probably be so different.

Timbaland producing a Coldplay song just seems weird to me. Weirder still, apart from the guitar it actually sounds ok. But this is what we’ve come to expect from Coldplay generation 2. I think Coldplay’s biggest self sabotage is their choice of producers. The only well produced Coldplay albums are 1 and 2, even VLV and X&Y are dodgy in places, and don’t even get me started on MX/AHFOD. I’d love to see Ken Nelson back or even someone like Steve Lilywhite to produce a Coldplay LP but I don’t think it will ever happen now.

I too understand the apprehension and concern regarding LP9. AHFOD reminds me of a re-hashed (and very poor) reimagining of MX. For a band that claims to change on every album, the last 3 Coldplay albums strike me as very derivative and uninspired and they all strike the same chord musically, pop megahits designed sit cutely at the top of the charts (with a few sprinklings of what made them great before) For me I’m still just focused on this release. Coldplay have a very similar trajectory to U2 and I hope that this album will be Coldplay’s “How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” ie they will revisit their older styles. For what comes next, we’ll just have to wait and see.

Interlude.

Trouble in Town - Sunrise
How great would it be if it was the metal version of trouble that was on the Live 2003 tour diary: Even a short sample of it before it builds into a different song would be an amazing way of showing they are aware of their musical roots but also evolving into something new and would be a nice little motif on the oldplay/newplay synergy of the new tracks. Bit of a wild theory but stranger wishes have come true for me on this LP already so why not!

Guns - Sunset
Yeah you’re right but b-side means something completely different nowadays with the way music is released compare with physical vinyls years ago. When I said b-side I meant it plays second fiddle to Orphans in the sense it wasn’t released as a stand alone single and was just “tagged” on to Orphans for marketing purposes.

LP8 Thread - Everyday Life
I think you’re missing the point of the song.
-
Guns - Sunset
Arabesque is the b-side to Orphans which is a real shame. Personally, I think that this album will not be very commercially/radio friendly and Orphans is sort of a token gesture to their label. At the end of the day, the record label see Coldplay as a massive cash cow and the “less pop” and more experimental they go (not to mention the political side that will alienate some people) and explicit content, Parlophone are probably worried it could damage Coldplay’s commercial providence. I’m just trying to put Orphans to one side, I can put up with one MX style song if the rest sounds like Arabesque, Guns and Everyday Life.

Everyday life - the track - Sunset
This songs a real grower. It makes me proud to be a Coldplay fan for the first time in a VERY long time. For me it’s the right blend of nostalgic and fresh, while it really reminds me of the X&Y era (The first Coldplay LP I ever bought) it still seems like it’s not retreading old ground. It’s not like everglow, with sickly sweet saccharine production and corny lyrics. It’s simply a Coldplay song that’s been untarnished by outside influences. Whereas sonically I think that LP2 will always remain the bands best compilation of songs, to me the spacey atmospherics, unashamed sentimentality and nervy alt rock sound of X&Y will forever be true, undiluted and pure Coldplay. This is exactly what this song is.

If this song is even 1/4 of the song Violet Hill is I will be extremely pleased. When Coldplay go historic/Political they produce some of their best material (Violet Hill, Politik, Arabesque, VLV) The more I hear from this album, the more it’s shaping up to be the dream album I’ve been asking for a long time. It’s rockier, indie, better produced, darker and has more attitude. The wait is killing me.

Political Coldplay finally happening!

Definitely, I have a feeling this album will eclipse Viva.. and to say that about a Coldplay LP in 2019 is really saying something.

I would love for Liam Gallagher to be on a Coldplay LP. If that happens it really would be every wish answered lol

AROBTTH is their defining album. I don’t think anything they will ever do will live up to it. This time around I’m going to try and judge the album on its own merits, not constantly trying to measure it up against AROBTTH because it will never shape up to it.

Stargate.... not thrilled to hear that.

Am I the future or the history? I think this lyric in EL will sum up this album. It’s going to be an effortless blend of Oldplay and Newplay.
