  1. 3 things that I don't think were mentioned exactly (or maybe they were *shrug*): It usually takes him 3 or 4 songs to really warm up at a show, so when he only has one or two songs on tv, he won't be warmed up or in to it the same way. Awards shows usually have universally crappy sound as a rule. It always sounds better in the auditorium than on tv. I've heard singers I know have perfect pitch sound off at an awards show, and I've been to one in person only to go home and watch the taped version in shock at how different and terrible it sounded. If you sit down and compare Coldplay's first three albums on an instrument, he actually sings a lot lower on Parachutes than X&Y even though it might not sound like it. The difference is that on Parachutes he would sing low and then throw in some high notes so that you would go "wow that's high", while on X&Y he just sang everything in a higher key, straining his voice live on his bad days. I'm very glad he's singing lower now. It always sounds better, and leaves more room for flourishes like in the old days.
  2. In that case, I'd read the manual- if you can adjust the iso you might be able to adjust the aperture and shutter speed (you can on my little automatic little digital camera but not without reading the manual). It's shutter speed that's going to get you the cool effects. Maybe you could borrow a camera? Set up a tripod and use a timer so that you don't shake the camera, and take long exposures with a pen light or laser pointer or something. If you can't figure out how to manually set the shutter speed, you could lower the lighting in the room to force it to take longer exposures. Remember though, any movement, even from your finger touching the button on the camera will lead to blurring or camera shake. Take lots of pictures, try lots of settings, and you'll figure out something that works. If you wanted to draw the light on a picture in photoshop, you would probably want to use the dodge (or is it burn?) tool and a little bit of colour.
  3. I think they used CGI for the light trails, to be honest. Long exposures would work for still cameras, but video is another story. Look at the way the light moves and wobbles in the air- that has to be CG. I wouldn't even be surprised if they actually had them draw on glass and then painted over it later. Notice that they all write with their left hands except for Guy (who is actually left-handed)? And that Guy then draws with his left when he's making swirls in the air? They flipped all of the shots with actual letters so that we could read them. I think it looks a lot simpler than it actually is.
  4. Surely there must already be an Explosions in the Sky thread...? *searches* There isn't! :shocked2: Well it's about time, then. They're wonderful. :D
  5. *blinks* Oh, hello. Interesting name you have there. :glasses: Always fun to find another Radiohead fan around here. :nice:
  6. The best way to tell is to look at how you would add the apostrophes without shortening the words. Because both words are plural and you're adding the apostrophe for possessiveness, there are two correct ways to write it (if I'm remembering right...): either the word with s's, as in sergeants's, or the word with s' as in sergeants'. Writing the word with 's would be to write sergeant's as in it's the possession of only one sergeant. You don't want that. s' is what I prefer. Using s's looks redundant and s' is much older and more traditional, from what I understand. When I was studying English my profs always said to pick either one as long as we were consistent for the entire paper. I don't think you would write it WOs' and Sgts' Mess, though, because it's normal to only add the possessive bit to the last name in a list. For example if it was Tom and Jack's mess you wouldn't say Tom's and Jack's mess, but would treat Tom and Jack as a unit and add the apostrophe to the last one in the list. I'm not 100% on that one though... I should look it up.
  7. Aww, I love it when a bunch of people just start getting into Radiohead. :D With patience whole worlds will open before your ears. I've been trying for years to figure out what the feeling I got when I first 'got' a Radiohead song reminded me of, and I finally just remembered. It was like the first time someone read me "The Hobbit" as a kid- when I knew that it was something special that would come to mean a lot to me, as though I had been looking for it my whole life up until then. So Tolkien for books, Radiohead for music, and it happened the first time I saw the Matrix for movies- me in a nutshell. You know, legend has it that when Thom first recorded that, he was so into it or upset by it that he burst into tears the moment he finished singing. So you're not exactly alone. ;)
  8. This poem is soooo good: [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UnfyoTSZZw]YouTube - Neil Gaiman Reading Instructions[/ame]
  9. ^I've tried to watch the American one with an open mind, I really have. But it makes me want to throw things at the TV screen- even the commercials for it do- which just plain isn't safe. So I gave up on it and will be glad to see it go. They are letting them finish it properly for a nice change, at least. I think it would have worked far better if it had been done more like Ashes to Ashes- the same thing happening to a different person. It would have given them a lot more creative freedom.
  10. Been on a big Doves kick this week. I love Kingdom of Rust so much- the video almost made me cry (and I don't cry for things) and I just keep listening to Jestream over and over. Hope the rest of the album can live up to it. They seem to have that effect I've found... A lot of their music can really move me while I'm listening to it but then it mysteriously slips away the moment it's finished. It isn't until later when I listen to it again that I go, "oh right they wrote that song. I love that song". Kind of cool, really.

You know, the funniest part of that was that my head is so completely engulfed in the British scene that a friend just chewed me out the other day for it. I was telling her about IDM (while we were writing an essay for class about The Verve's big copyright battle) so she looked it up on Wikipedia and it said that IDM started in Britain. I think the rant was something along the lines of how many different types of music are there from Britain anyway, why do I have to listen to them all, and do I ever actually listen to anything that isn't British? I do listen to Canadian music every once in a while, for the record. But the British scene is better. ...They have Radiohead, after all.
  12. :uhoh: What did I do to deserve this honour? Or are you referring to the other Mo? If this about that *coughcough* ahem, other thread then, well, it's the best, funniest, most ignorantly ludicrous insulting rant I've had hurled in my direction ever, and I will cherish it always. :nice: In fact, I may stick it in my sig if it won't offend others who read it...

:laugh3::laugh3::laugh3: Heehee! Dude, I wondered if you were going to take the bait, but that was EPIC!!! :laugh3::laugh3::laugh3: And I have a big pile of Oasis CDs in my room that disagrees with you. :P For the record, I was teasing because of your ironic timing, see: http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/miley-cyrus/news/100960-miley-cyrus-snubbed-by-radiohead
  14. ^Not really, history backs up the sugar brigade. The greatest of anything of any era often takes time to reveal itself. And in case you didn't hear, the Jonas Brothers' movie was just a major box office flop...

I refuse. It's both and will forever be both, though for very different reasons.:p ...And yes, this exact poll already exists in the world of music... last I checked the results were nearly even. Will be interesting to see how much Coldplay wins by in this section.
  16. Teeny-boppers... they'll grow up. Still doesn't change the fact that she's a spoiled brat throwing a tantrum just because Radiohead wouldn't pay attention to her at the Grammys.
  17. Better zombies than bad credit, really... It'll make for a far more entertaining obituary.
  18. Behold, one or her zombie Radiohead-ruining foot soldiers come to destroy us all.
  19. ^You forgot Miley on that list... :p
  20. Yeah, but there are two very important differences. Here, we can choose who we are and how we act, and here we can walk away at any moment- it's easy to rise above it all or leave it all behind. You couldn't pay me to go back to highschool. I always come back here willingly because I still think it's the best music community I've ever found on the web and I love it here. :nice:

Oasis? You can't fool me. You think Hanna Montana is the greatest, don't you. :P
  22. I don't believe you. :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: :bigcry: :P:lol:
  23. ^Yeah, it's heavy stuff. :( Worse if you live where it's in the paper every day. I doubt that they'll ever let him out. He's clearly deeply disturbed, and they realize that. (Good to see you back, Tracie. :nice:)

I have no problem with your criticism, I merely question your motives, you Miley-loving rabble-rouser. :P
  25. heh... I usually just keep my mouth shut and wait till they explain themselves when that happens. ;)
