  5. First Listen: Muse The Resistance Drowned in Sound reviews the new Muse album The Resistance in a first listen, track-by-track commentary stylee... Uprising A glam-rock 'Robot Rock' (Daft Punk) meets 'Stand and Deliver' (Adam Ant) synth throb, the combined effect of which is a little like Belgian band Millionaire. Or rather this is this album's 'Supermassive Black Hole' but with a riff a little like Battles' 'Atlas' but with intermittent Blondie 'Call Me' guitar squeals. Matt Bellamy's lyrics on this opening track kick things off in battle mode: "A fat cats had a heart attack...we've gotta unify and let the flag ascend....they will not control us, we will be victorious." The Resistance A tiny piano line, then drums like galloping the white horses of a tsunami. There's an odd nod to the Public Image Limited track 'Rise' with Bellamy pondering: "He could be wrong, could be wrong...couldn't be right?" However, this track is pretty much the album's concept summed up with the line "Love is our resistance..." but don't panic, this isn't an album free of sci-fi conspiracy, as Matt sings "our lips must always be sealed" before a thunder 'n' lightning-like Kate Bush 'Running Up That Hill' homage snaps and rumbles as the track ends. Undisclosed Desires With a skippity R&B rhythm, a hip-hop beat and mixed with a Dirty Projectors' soaring vocal melody (singing: "I want to reconcile the violence in your heart... I want to exorcise the demons from your past."), this track is an odd but interesting new feather to Muse's bow. Some reviewers will probably compare the chopped up samples to Thom Yorke's 'Harrowdown Hill' but it's much more kevlar coated and doused in 'Idioteque' head-nodability than that. United States of Eurasia (+collateral damage) The one you've probably already heard. An ode to Spielberg? Sounds like the opening of 'Radars of the Lost Ark' as played by Queen and Jeff Buckley. Fades into a Fellini cafe moment, followed by fighter plane flare and huge gong/drum-thud. Guiding Light A marching hymn-like anthem. Those giant robot footed bass-synths stomp all over it. Sort of like MCR's 'Black Parade' stripped right down but sort of not. Unnatural Selection The organ opening makes way for a pounding 'Agitated'/'New Born'-like riff. Not sure if it's the volume but this whole track (and most of the album this far) jitters like a beast with the shakes before making way for more of that gravity-defying floating off wonder that is Muse's trademark. Oddly, this is the first time I've noticed the lack of that compressed heavy breathing which rubs a lot of non-Muse fans up the wrong way. MK Ultra Soaring, swooping and then clattering, then soaring like a shuttle ride (or at least the Disney roller-coaster version). Then a fuck off neck-pissing down riff. This track is a glorious rock epic. I Belong to You (+Mon Coeur S'Ourve A Ta Voix) Like the heaviest boogie-piano line Elton John never dared write. Followed by a French (like, literally sung in French) waltz motionlessly racing through the house of flying daggers. Then the melody drops back in and grooves around the refrain "I travelled half the world to say I belong to you." Exogenesis: Symphony Part i (Overture) Ladies and Gentlemen we're floating in Planet of the Apes space, crossing jungles and getting howled at by the Mayans. Waterfalls of strings, guttural bass thundering beneath. [insert obvious Pink Floyd comparison here.] Exogenesis: Symphony Part ii (Cross Pollination) Plinky piano builds to a Godzilla riff. It's fucking ridiculous but exhilaratingly and brilliantly indulgent. Bellamy howls "You must rescue us all!" Exogenesis: Symphony Part iii (Redemption) This is lovely. A sleepy-time music box swirls and graciously builds and builds with strings atop a wondrous drum line before the whole thing rises up like an army of yawning tigers. Flowers open and suns rise and fall in fast forward on far-off horizons. Conclusion: Muse have clearly gone off and explored their own possibilities, and the result is an album that rarely relents and surprises you with what's around the next bend. Really can't tell after one listen whether there are any huge hits on this record or whether the album is just one big adventure from a band who are really hitting their stride and unafraid of taking the lazy rehash path. The singles released thus far certainly don't do the album justice but perhaps offer digestible clues to this albums grandeur and the ever more sophisticated mad-scientist-ness that we've come to know and love from this Teignmouth trio. The symphony on the end is perhaps a bit much but then Muse have never been a band afraid of being bewilderingly over the top. 9/10

  9. Unmap CD / LP (JAG156, released: 09/22/09) Volcano Choir is an assembly of Wisconsinites Jon Mueller, Chris Rosenau, Jim Schoenecker, Daniel Spack, Justin Vernon, and Thomas Wincek. You might find these old friends also frequenting records and stages under different monikers, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Bon Iver. The collaboration predates the meteoric rise of Justin Vernon's Bon Iver project, with original songwriting dating back to the summer of 2005, right around the time the Bees first toured with Vernon's previous band DeYarmond Edison. While entirely a studio record, the collection doesn't suffer from the overburdens of a digital pile up or over-thinking. Rather it breathes and convulses in equal measure, radiating an inherent dynamism found only in the voluntary bondage of intimacy. With influences ranging from David Sylvian and Steve Reich to Mahalia Jackson and Tom Waits, it might be more accurate to say the group's influence is music itself. You can hear it in the care and real love generously applied to each moment of Unmap. With the vibe of some intimate backwoods gospel, plus a spirit of patience and thoughtful repetition, the music of Volcano Choir is as dynamic as it is lovely. Unmap ultimately came together over a weekend in November 2008 in Fall Creek, Wisconsin, at Justin and Nate Vernon's recording studio. And while it is at its heart a record about the allure of being with people you need and making something with them, it is also a document created by musicians with rare gifts getting together to exorcise their ideas about beauty. This scaffolding of loops and off grid tempos for choral style vocals offers a state of continual surprise, call it unexpectation. Unmap marks the debut full-length from Volcano Choir, the collaboration between Collections of Colonies of Bees and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. 10. Mew

Dejan replied to yellowy eyes's topic in The World Of Music
POPMATTERS REVIEW You may remember Mew from their 2006 release, And the Glass Handed Kites, which featured a) an intelligent collection of poppy prog rock and b) one of the worst album covers ever. Ever. Really, see for yourself. Fortunately, for me and this review, the press copy of Mew’s latest—which, in an odd twist, features one of the worst (and longest) album titles ever—did not come with album art. More fortunate, however, is that it seems that Mew has picked up musically right where they left off on And the Glass Handed Kites. No more stories / Are told today / I’m sorry / They washed away / No more stories / The world is grey / I’m tired / Let’s wash away is the album’s full title, and also the lyrics to a song on the album. Just printing the full title is most likely both a triumph and a joke to the band, whose members probably bet on whether a major label would actually release an album with such a long title (yay, Columbia!). Luckily for us online critics, review space doesn’t come at a premium. NAITNTIL (I pronounce it “en-ate-until”), as I’ll refer to it from now until the end of time, features the same intelligent, big sound we’ve come to expect from Mew. Like its predecessors, NAITNTIL is filled with intricately-layered guitar, polyrhythmic drumming, sudden time changes, and sugary melodies that easily caramelize in your head. This time around, Mew have amped up the electronica and toned down the metal influence; where the heavily-distorted guitar obelisk once stood, there are now synthy condos. But, all in all, NAITNTIL serves as a tasty, toned-down aperitif to the critically-acclaimed And the Glass Handed Kites. Like their album rock forbearers, Mew begin NAITNTIL with a moody—some might say superfluous—introductory build-up track aptly-titled “New Terrain” that, with fuzzy blurps and bleeps, foreshadows the electronic-y inflection of the songs to come. This slightly-clichéd introduction climaxes in a pastoral wash of synth noise and then fades into “Introducing Palace Players”, Mew’s best song to date. An explosive and infectious stew of prog-pop, the song features incendiary guitar riffage that would singe the beard hairs off of the most ardent ZZ Top fan. It’s a song that would sound at home on And the Glass Handed Kites. “Beach”, the third track on NAITNTIL, is really the bell that signals a new Mew. Gone are the big guitar riffs and relentless drumming, replaced by a beautifully-arranged, smoky collection of keyboards and strings over a (shrinking) wall of reverbed guitar, melodic bass, and relatively subdued (yet intricate) drums. That may sound like a step in the wrong direction for a band that made its mark with big, distorted guitar riffs and pummeling drums. On the contrary, it’s a more mature Mew, with an ear towards dense harmony, subtle transitions, and, most importantly, sonic detail. In short, it’s a breath of fresh air in the increasingly simplistic (too simplistic?) world of rock, where the guitar-drums duo is the new standard. For the most part, the remainder of NAITNTIL follows in the footsteps of “Beach”. “Silas the Magic Car” is a tender ballad that stutters, chimes, and echoes its way to a happy place. “Hawaii” and the fugue-like “Cartoons and Macramé Wounds” feature carefully-layered vocal harmonies that pirouette into your mind and refuse to leave. Big guitars make a brief appearance on “Vaccine” and “Repeaterbeater”, but only to accent sweet piano melodies and swinging percussive passages. Mew’s major weakness is vocals. While lead singer Jonas Bjerre occasionally meanders into Brian Wilson territory, he doesn’t possess the pipes to inhabit the rock world. Wisely, Mew emphasize the instrumentation in their songs, using vocals—which are normally reverbed to within an inch of their sonic lives—like another guitar rather than a leading element. The only real downside to NAITNTIL is Mew’s overuse of the interlude. Of the album’s 14 tracks, only nine are actual songs, with the remaining five serving as moody introductions or outros. These interludes come across as self-indulgent musical masturbation rather than some grand artistic statement. Despite a few drawbacks, NAITNTIL is a triumph. It signals a more mature Mew, with more to say and more ways to say it. So does the success of NAITNTIL make us forget the fact that Mew are responsible for one of the worst album covers in rock history? Hell no. 8 stars

  14. Liam and Noel Gallagher No Longer Speak To Each Other The 36 year-old the NME: "He doesn't like me and I don't like him, that's it. He hasn't told me what he thinks of anything this year. We've got nothing to say to each other at the moment... The only time I see him is onstage and we're a little bit busy (at) that time to be fucking scratching each other." According to Liam it was an argument at an airport concerning a support band that strained the relationship even further, "I think it might have been about some fucking shit support band he wanted to play with us and he didn't ask my permission.” He concluded, “So we had a fucking ding-dong in the airport and I think he started crying then. That was it - doesn't travel with me anymore... For the first time in my life, I haven't got a fucking clue what's going on with Oasis. It's pretty confusing but I'm not going to freak out about it." Noel recently took aim at Liam after the vocalist reportedly stormed of stage at London's Roundhouse venue whilst playing the iTunes festival, saying his younger brother was “probably on his man period". The Britpop survivors are set to headline the V Festival this coming weekend which takes place in Staffordshire and Chelmsford.

The gigs don’t work- The Verve finally call it a day They’ve had more break-ups than Britney Spears has had breakdowns, but I can exclusively reveal that The Verve have now well and truly split. The legendary indie band have been blighted by rows since forming in 1990. It turns out this time band members Nick McCabe and Simon Jones have not spoken to lead singer Richard Ashcroft since their gig at V Festival last August, despite trying on numerous occasions to hold out an olive branch. “As far as Nick and Simon are concerned The Verve no longer exists,” a source close to the lads tells me. “They think Richard was just using the reunion as a vehicle to get his solo career on track.” The Britpop boys announced a reunion in June 2007 and went on a sold-out tour, releasing number one album Forth last summer. But the old tensions soon came back, centred on guitarist Nick’s wild partying. “Their management called Simon and Nick in for a crisis meeting in September. They were told that Richard refused to tour or work with them again as long as Nick continued to drink. He quickly cleaned up his act.” But it’s not as if Simon and Nick are sitting on their bums waiting for the next reunion – they’ve already started up their own band, apparently called The Black Ships. Nick writes on his MySpace page: “The Verve seems to be on holiday and shows no sign of not being on holiday. I’ve been hesitant to breach Official Secrets-style policy with any missives from the, well, from any front, basically. Don’t ask me anything about the big V. Just let me enjoy my non-alcoholic Piña Colada.” Simon told fans: “The Black Ships are coming!” My mole says: “There have been too many problems to put behind them. If Richard came back with cap in hand they’d tell him to f*** off.”

  19. The Killers and Kings Of Leon. The names roll off the tongue and not just because they begin with the same letter. Pretty much every festival has been headlined by either one or both of them recently and it’s getting boring. Obviously festival owners work in such a crowded market they have to book the acts they know will bring the punters in and the Killers/ Kings axis guarantees the £50 Tesco man will be interested. What is worrying however is the lack of competition for these two contemporary giants. Looking across this year’s festival circuit makes for pretty dull reading. Blur reformed and obviously took their rightful place atop numerous bills and Arctic Monkeys are on another level to most indie bands so could probably headline all three nights of Reading/ Leeds were it not for Radiohead. But who else is there? Franz Ferdinand only headlined the Leeds and Reading festivals in 2007 because Arctic Monkeys turned it down and their most recent album has been met with muted sales. However, their set at this years Glastonbury as headliners of The Other Stage was a bona-fide success and will hopefully see their stock rise. Elsewhere you have Muse and Oasis who, like Arctic Monkeys and Radiohead, operate on another level to most acts around. Both bands have headlined festivals before though so whilst they might break the monotony of Brandon Flowers and the Followills they are nothing risky or new. As far as I can see there are three contenders: Kasabian, Bloc Party and Dizzee Rascal. Now before you cough and splutter remember that just two years ago Kings Of Leon were playing on festival bills below the likes of Razorlight. It took a relative punt by Michael Evis for the Nashville boys to establish themselves as a headline band. Riding on the wave of a Mercury nominated third album and a reputation as a mean live band Kasabian must be the most likely to make the next step on the ladder. Just imagine how giddy Tom Meighan would be headlining in front of 100,000 people at Glastonbury and you just know that ‘L.S.F’ would sound monumental. Bloc Party have an air of the ‘Always the bridesmaid, never the bride’ when it comes to festivals, however, they have a solid foundation of hits and enough fans to close the show. Finally Dizzee Rascal; by the end of 2009 he will be the biggest pop star in the country. Loved by fans of all genres he is making huge strides towards ubiquity and surely a headline slot at a major festival will follow. For too long men with guitars have dominated the Summer circuit and it would make a great statement for a big festival to pick Dizzee as one of their marquee names. Perhaps the Jay-Z debacle has burned promoters fingers but still we can live in hope. Who would you like to see play the big festivals? Perhaps Glasvegas could headline T in the Park whilst any sort of return from The Strokes or White Stripes would see muddy revellers going wild. Is there just a lack of acts good enough to make that step up though? What about Arcade Fire, The Cribs, Maximo Park or Yeah Yeah Yeah’s?
  20. He got an incredible voice....i don't know how to describe his style, maybe "folk",but i don't care because is all about his wonderful voice. The music is damn good too! Check out 4 brand new tracks from his upcoming album and drop your feelings. http://www.joshuajames.tv/
