Coldplay are now a pop band
Quite agree. The Beatles defined pop music, and this is actually what I was trying to drive at with this thread - that in my opinion Coldplay have become pop, but are actually redefining and reinventing the genre as we speak. I have nothing against pop music, and would never write it all off as being rubbish. After all, if we did that we would never have enjoyed Gary singing Back For Good with the band last night. Gosh, we probably woudn't have had Lovers in Japan either!

^ I absolutely agree with all that, but this thread's not about any of those things. It's about whether they are now pop or not.

Any Advice? (universities)
The University of Kent at Canterbury is a rather quiet campus I think. Probably very good for study but quite quiet socially. Lovely setting though. York is beautiful, and it's not too far from other places you might like to visit. It has a unique atmosphere, and I really think you'd feel like you were at university, with all the old buildings and history about, if that makes sense. It's a pretty quiet place again, but as I wrote not too far for travel to a livelier nightlife spot like Sheffield or Leeds if you like to party. Sussex is Brighton? In my opinion this place has it all in terms of nightlife and culture, and also a fairly decent university. I've long been thinking of moving down there myself. Good luck and please let us know how you get on!! :)

Coldplay are now a pop band
Me too Lore, but out of interest do you think they've become more 'pop', especially recently?

Coldplay are now a pop band
A nice way to put it Mark, but there are thousands of pop and rock acts that are unique, that wasn't the question I posed. That's a bit like saying that cornflakes are 'special' when asked whether or not it's a breakfast cereal. Thanks for the replies everyone! It's interesting that the 'not a pop act' votes are in the lead. I'll post some reasons why I think they've become so later on.

I was offered a ticket by a very kind chap who messaged me from here, which I never took up because I haven't been very well. So in a sense I had a ticket if I wanted one (and I did) and the chap (saint_james) was great enough to wait for a day to see if I felt able to attend. As I didn't he then sold it on to another true fan at cost price. Cracking fellow. No places at the gig were wasted because of my illness. Dfective please try to get the right end of the stick before you start throwing angry smilies about the place.

Coldplay are now a pop band
^ Great point, and I'm the same as you. Postcards From Far Away (wake up Lore haha) is a very beautiful classical piece, and then we have everything from Lost with Jay-Z (with added rap) to ambient, abstract pieces such as Poppyfields. Are Coldplay perhaps not only a pop band now, but in fact actually redefining the boundaries of pop music itself? I think that's what i'm trying to drive at, and why I made this thread.

Coldplay are now a pop band
Fascinating answers, thanks guys! I really would appreciate more opinions and input here, and look forward to what comes up. As I've already written, I'll save my own opinion for later. But what does make a pop band? A great question, and I'm sure there's no definitive answer. I feel myself that the band's progression over the last four albums has been Indie>Indie Rock>Stadium Rock>Pop/Rock, and that now they're very close to being the purest form of a rock/pop band (not group!) No bad thing in my book.

So was I (jealous, I mean, not up in Scotland :laugh3:). I had a ticket too but wasn't able to go  Glad it wasn't your vid after I'd been so critical. Now I know it wan't yours I can elaborate - it was absolutely horrendous!! :P

^^^^^ That has got to be just about the worst quality video I have ever seen in my life! I could watch no more after exactly 28 seconds, it was making me feel sick! Please, if it improved after that someone message me and I may try again

So you don't think it's a bad thing for them to have become more pop, but do you think they're now a pop band or not?

Coldplay/Killers War Child tix up for grabs
My friend used to run similar competitions, and as he quickly found out it's very very easy to fix when no winner is ever announced publicly. Let's just say that quite a few prizes were awarded to his friends, who would then pass them back to him :( I'm in no way suggesting that that's the case here, just that knowing what I do about these sorts of things I enter but never expect to win!! But, there's been no spam to my email address since I entered I must say :)

The BRITs 2009 Thread
Great post Debs thanks :) I completely agree, I absolutely love Warwick Avenue, but last night Duffy seemed to be warbling for Britain...is there such an event at the 2012 Olympics? If so we're gonna get at least one gold! :D As for the pop vote, I've come round to the opinion that Coldplay have become a pop band themselves, and have just started a thread on it. I won't be posting my opinions there for quite a while as I'm really interested to see what others think, but I'm sure I can let a little bit slip here and say that, yes, I think they are now, but in the purest sense of the word; following the Beatles down that path, and the first band to do so imho.
