[21-Oct-2011] Coldplay @ Today Show, Rockefeller Plaza, New York, USA
My guesses for what they'll play, assuming they do 5 again on air: Paradise ETIAW Charlie Brown Hurts Like Heaven Viva I'd really like to switch out Viva for something else new, though, just because it's a short set and I'd like to maximise hearing new stuff because it's new. Either way, I think they'll stick to the happy, pumped-up songs for a televised morning show, nothing too melancholy or slow like UATW, or the oldies like The Scientist or Fix You. Watch me be totally wrong, though  Last time in soundcheck they also did an acoustic version of Yellow, so maybe we can hope for one more song in soundcheck?

The PROS & CONS of "Princess of China" (plus 1-10 sliding poll)
Awwww, I'm excited to see that in the booklet myself :nice:. Of course, I knew they WOULD credit them, I was just kidding when I said they would have to watch their backs. It's not like they're new to this game  Now all they need to do is sample The Strokes and I'd die happy :wacky: (Actually I'm usually not a grand fan of sampling in general, but every time Coldplay has done it it's worked very well for them, in my opinion)

First Impressions of Mylo Xyloto (and vote in the 1-10 sliding scale poll!)
OK, to supplement this, I did a bit of an initial track-by-track. It's written for my Tumblr, so not a completely Coldplay-literate audience, as my Tumblr is more Strokes-centric in general. And it's SUPER long :P The only thing I'd add is that I wish "Up With The Birds" was two separate songs: the first half and the second.

The PROS & CONS of "Princess of China" (plus 1-10 sliding poll)
I would like to apologize for this last night  Now that I hear it in better quality, and with UFO before it, IT TOTALLY DOES FUCKING SAMPLE TAKK BY SIGUR RÓS AND I LOVE IT That's not just a sonic similarity, it's definitely a sample. And if it's not credited as such and Sigur Rós want to get serious, I think they could have a lawsuit on their hands, but I don't honestly think Coldplay would do that without asking, especially not in light of all their woes with Satriani etc. But yes, major apologies...it took me hearing it in UFO to realize that it totally was Takk and my heart melted because Sigur Rós are one of my favorite artists of all time :wacky:

[Oct 1st] MX era font updated (songs symbols included)
THANK YOU! It's ok if it looks a bit sloppy, I can clean it up in Photoshop, and mostly I just need it big so I can print it out and make a stencil out of it to spraypaint very large on a t-shirt, so perfectly defined edges aren't necessary. Thanks so much! :nice:

[Oct 1st] MX era font updated (songs symbols included)
.PSD is fine, I have Elements :D And the reason I don't have the ETIAW3 is because I can't get it to work at all, only the older version of the font (without the symbols) is able to work for me at all, in Word or Photoshop or otherwise :bigcry:

It must be a Mac thing or something, it seems like other Mac-users are having a problem Thank you so much, though

Could someone just send me a screenshot of the AHT radio tower as big as you could possibly get it? :shy:

It just DOESN'T WORK for the symbols at all, I just tried that :bigcry: I just want the radio tower one for the moment, that's all I ask .

[Oct 1st] MX era font updated (songs symbols included)
Would someone be able to tell me how to get the symbols to work in ANY way on a Mac? I can't figure it out :( I'm looking for the "A Hopeful Transmission" one especially :D (Or if anyone could just get me that symbol in hi-res/HD that I could use, I want to make a shirt for The Today Show :nice:)

First Impressions of Mylo Xyloto (and vote in the 1-10 sliding scale poll!)
Touché, Coldplay. I’ve only listened twice, but everything sounds so much better in context. Which I figured would happen, and which is what I was hoping for. I still don’t think this is their best work in my personal opinion, just because it’s not “my style” so much, but leave it to Coldplay to make something completely different to what I usually listen to and hope for and still impress me. Right now, I’m thinking 6.5 or 7/10, even though I hate ranking things out of ten. As a whole piece of work, it’s great. There are several things and moments I would have done differently, but Eno and I don’t really see eye-to-eye on lots of things, so that’s OK. I always go on the low side when I first hear albums I’m greatly anticipating, though, because I have a fear of being too overly generous at first in excitement (which I’ve done before). I think this will end up being firmly between a 7 and an 8 for me, which is…astonishing, given what I expected. And the fact that there are still only two dud songs (which sound much better on the album than as singles) is a great thing, for any band, any album. I can’t believe I get to see them on Friday. I cannot believe it. I’m like in tears over that.

The PROS & CONS of "Princess of China" (plus 1-10 sliding poll)
And people say I say weird things about what songs sound like in comparison to others :wtf: I honestly don't see where that comparison even comes from, let alone that they sampled it, unless it's completely buried in the overproduction.

The Song (No LINKS ALLOWED) 16-10
I'm surprised by this too, actually, and was with Paradise. I feel like ETIAW got the most hate, and though I totally agree that it's nowhere near their best work, has terrible lyrics, and exemplifies the new direction and all that, I actually really like it. It has strains of Viva-era Coldplay in it to me, which has strains of earlier-era Coldplay in it, so therefore it connects into their career's "thread" to me while still evolving for better or for worse. But Paradise and PoC I feel are HUGE departures into completely new ground for them. I thought by nature, something so different would leave half of the fandom loving it and half hating it, as the reaction to ETIAW was, but it seems like those two are getting more "eh, it's OK" ratings from people that previously spat all over ETIAW. I'm just interested in that, is all, because I have the opposite thing in my head.

The PROS & CONS of "Princess of China" (plus 1-10 sliding poll)
Just really not my style, as was Paradise. I voted 3, though I can't remember what I gave Paradise, maybe a 3 or 4. I still really love ETIAW, though, which I think is the other big polarizing song of this era so far (actually probably the most polarizing, which kind of surprises me, because I find Paradise and PoC a bit more...shocking or whatever, more of a departure). I also like all of the others we've heard so far in their live manifestations. If PoC and Paradise are the only two major duds for me on this album, I can totally live with that. Any more than that, though, and I'm going to have to count the album as more of a miss than a hit for me, though, and I'm not looking forward to that.

Mylo Xyloto will be streamed on iTunes in a one-track-per-day mode
Still not on US iTunes, wonder if that will materialize once it actually hits midnight here...

Mylo Xyloto to be streamed on radio on Monday!
I just hope they're all recorded like this one was! I used to live in The Netherlands, I could have helped with that :P

Mylo Xyloto to be streamed on radio on Monday!
I was surprised they did this already--I know it's tomorrow in The Netherlands, but I figured they'd to it at like, primetime their time, like 8PM or so on Monday, not like 1AM. So I guess I can expect each song around 7PM my time each night, I'm cool with that

New Coldplay eh?
I think Rihanna suits it very well, so it's not really her that bothers me about it, but more that they're putting songs Rihanna suits on the record in the first place, because that's not my style.

The Song (No LINKS ALLOWED) 16-10
Dutch radio is streaming one Coldplay song per day for the rest of the week. The schedule is on the calendar, which is sticky in the Mylo Xyloto forum, and evidently they'll also be streamed via iTunes as well, but that hasn't materialized yet.

New Coldplay eh?
Yeah, I feel pretty much the same about PoC as I do about Paradise, but I still love ETIAW (and everything else of late, to varying degrees), which I feel is still the song that has the most hate, or at least polarization surrounding it, so whatever, I don't know anymore. But to me: it sounds exactly like everything else I'd hear on Top 40 radio if I flicked it on right now. It sounds like Rihanna feat. Chris Martin more than Coldplay feat. Rihanna. If the band thing ever stopped working for Chris, he could still make millions writing overdone pop songs for other artists who never write their own stuff. I think I'm just disappointed that he's doing that in his own band now and not saving it for others who need that kind of stuff to make money off of. Coldplay don't need to do that, but I guess they just want to now, which is the part I'm not so happy about on a personal level. I'm all for experimentation, for the most part, I guess I just am not feeling this style they're testing out. I feel like ETIAW at least had a thread of their old selves in it with the glittering anthemicness of it, but Paradise and PoC seem to be a bit more of a test-drive of hijacking other styles to me.

The Song (No LINKS ALLOWED) 16-10
I guess I didn't mean that this song DOESN'T have a catchy riff at all, it's just not one that appeals to me as much as ones in other songs of theirs . Also, I feel like no matter what the riff is in this song, the beat overshadows it a bit, in that the beat is more central than the riff. I edited my post a bit to reflect that. I'm horrible at describing the technical aspects of music, I really shouldn't ever bother .

The Song (No LINKS ALLOWED) 16-10
I'm not really feeling it, but I'm tired of despairing over Coldplay's "new direction," so I'm not going to be harsh or anything. But to me, it sounds to be in the same vein as "Paradise," which I'm not a big fan of--it sounds very Top 40 radio to me in the sense that I think it sounds a lot like the kind of stuff that's already out there. And whoever said it before I think was right: Rihanna feat. Chris Martin is the vibe I get, although I think she suits the song for what it is very well. All of this said about those two songs, I really love ETIAW, lest anyone think I'm just a huge Coldplay grumpus now. For whatever reason, I just don't click with "Paradise" and "Princess of China," and as long as the rest of the unheard parts of the album don't go the same way, that's fine, to have two duds for me. I think the thing I'm not a huge fan of is that I like the songs that have super catchy, sparkling central riffs, like ETIAW and CB of this era, and like "Clocks" and "Speed of Sound" etc from the past. "Paradise" and "Princess" are much more heavy-beat centric to my ear, in that the beat overshadows any of the riffs that exist, and that just doesn't appeal to me as much as something centered around a glittering central guitar or piano riff of some of their other songs. The riff in this song just doesn't do much for me, I guess, and I feel like the beat is the main point
