Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
That's true for machines, but here we're looking at something that has a limited number of possible patterns, and is in mind mind at least, part of the commons. Wasn't it E.B. Dubois who had already listed most of the possible riffs and chord arrangements a long, long time ago?? - so here we have something that has a limited range of possibilities, and that to me should not be permitted to be held as someone's unique creation.

Integrating it all for a better future
YAY!!! I can visit Starlight!:) (I'll bring a cloth bag, I promise!) Hmm.. well the science of living more eco-friendly can get complex, but basically is boils down to things closer to nature are generally better for us and the environment. So, we've evolved in sync with nature, and natural bio-polymers are fine with our bodies, and with the micro-organisms in the soil, etc. Cellulose is one example of a natural bio-polymer (flax and cotton, two basic examples), as is lignin (in wood), chitin (insect shells), starches, etc. These things are natural, edible, bio-degradable, and generally don't require all the messy chemicals to process into products. But industry isn't geared for them yet, because the other types are incredibly cheap to make (without considering human health), the resource is presently abundant (natural gas and oil), and there's no incentive for them to make bio-plastics in quantities just yet. Hopefully, we can get that to change.;)

Integrating it all for a better future
What about government mandating that all plastic bags, outside of certain ones for irreplaceable uses (such as hospital I.V. bags, etc.) be made of bio-degradable or inert (like glass fiber woven mesh) material at the minimum. I know Government regs. can be a real pain, but government is supposed to be there as the referee and ultimate check on things, to make our societies more equitable. Is this a good idea? YEA!! OZ is doing it right! Where is this Oz??

Integrating it all for a better future
I like that idea!! When I was a student at the U, I would have loved to have had a garden - but the landlord wasn't too keen on the idea.. And with the down economy, a lot of home owners are putting in big gardens to get by with. (unfortunately, the developers strip the topsoil, and you have to buy it back - but it's probably worth it!) Hmm.. Well, some religious groups do that - they are taught to be self-sufficient in case of emergency, but on a more practical level, maybe just have a really good garden, and trading with others for the veggies and crops you're not raising makes sense. Or CSA's work out well, if you're really busy. The cities have community gardens now, and that's a blessing! I think we'll transition alright - farm and garden the yards, make the houses more self-sufficient, and make the vehicles super-efficient and green - I believe it's quite do-able. But times are tough now from the economic fall, yet I'm sure we'll recover - and we can be doing so much more with so much less, it's really a win-win-win for everyone!

:laugh3: How true! I'm beginning to think that older musicians go through a phase of wanting attention and recognition again; and they're frustrated. So, as was with the 80-year-old Dutch singer from Italy, I think I see a pattern emerging.. All they want is attention! Maybe we need more than the rock-and-roll hall of fame to help these guys out, and make them feel loved and admired again??

Video: Was America Ever a White Nation?
Freedom of Speech is just that. But really, the whole notion of race is just kooky. There is only the human species, with subtle variations on a theme - mostly adaptations to climate or conditions, but some phenotypic expressions from selection pressures for superficial traits, such as hair or eye color. There are different ways of thinking, different ways of structuring social relationships, and different degrees of ordered arrangements or individualized directions within societies. And nothing is static. Lets see.. if we go by the classical definitions, this is more a matter of trying to lump often dissimilar groups together, and that's a poor fit for the reality of the complex human interrelationships we all have.. I move we ban the word 'race' from the English language.

Quick Rudy - claim the letter A, and you can get the royalties from all the teachers who give A's!:laugh3:

Coldplagiarism
Well, I invented music, but the patent laws only gave me 90 years of royalties..:( And nobody rights music like that anymore!:laugh3: And I knew this gal named Rachel, and she invented tea! Of course, it wasn't until Mr. Cup came along and drew a cup that her invention could be applied, other than in the abstract. Hence, ever since, if you "draw up a cup of tea" it has real historical significance.:P Now go claim your millions from the masses, and enjoy the fruits of your labor.:) I need to go konk out - past my beddie-bye time.

Well of course!:laugh3: I want 1/10th of one cent for every G anyone on the planet uses, although I'm willing to offer a volume discount - 1000 G's for only $4.95, plus tax. Act now - supplies are limited. And remember, always credit the original source!! Of course Rudy, this means that you can claim a letter and charge what you like! Remember, be generous if it's a vowel..:P (and you can't take Z, because we all need it to rest..):sleeping2:

Should Gary marry Marie Osmond?
:laugh3:Well, I mentioned that to Gary. He said he would even become a Mormon, if that's what it takes! Now of course this was after a few beers...:laugh3: But, he's afraid he'd never pass the vetting by the Osmond brothers..:) So, he's taking more time to come up with a plan. A scenario where all the stars align, etc. I've gotta give him credit for daring the near-impossible, and hey, we all like to daydream.. But I promised him I would make the effort to pull all the strings I can pull, and try and set him up on a date with Marie (once he comes up with a plan, that is..). :P & The doll fetish has got him a bit curious as well..

When the numerical and desirable combinations are few, it's understandable that, whether intentional or not, those chord progressions will recur throughout time. Ownership or rights over so limited range of the possible combinations that actually sound good together seems like trying to own the common sounds made using the human voice box- because one person thinks they're the first. Why not credit the lyre or harp players of ancient Egypt then? Legally or not, looking at it from a common-sense moral perspective, it seems to me to be absurd to try and claim ownership over something like this. Unlike, say, a great painting - which has an incredibly large set of possible arrangements of colors, shapes, textures, layers, etc.- to lay claim to something so basic is in my mind at least like trying to lay an intellectual property claim to the shape of a perfect sphere of any given size. And I say this as both a fan of Deep Purple and of Coldplay. Personally, I could have raised some lawsuit over the intellectual property rights to the original keyboard sounds & components of Clocks, but I did not, and I will not. Why? Because it's ridiculous; it's so very simple, and unless the piece is used in a manner very close to the original & as a whole, it's just not the same. (And because I gave it away as a gift to the world, I simply wanted more people to enjoy music, and not get bogged down in the mud of ownership fights). Taking some chord progressions, riffs, or other snips, and then saying that's significant enough to claim ownership over a fragment of music, which can easily be assembled just by one's own dabblings and is in fact a common recurrence by all musical writers throughout time, is not being realistic about our nature, or the nature of music in general. I would have to say that were we to look closely at almost any musical act, past or present, there would almost undoubtedly be similarities or patterns used that were either close to or the same as the original. So, even if Coldplay modeled a part of one song after another, it's been the same thing throughout history. The folk singers complained that the rock & rollers took their stuff, but then their stuff was often taken from older traditional folk singers, and on back to Aunt Sally in the hills of Carolina, etc. Aunt Sally might have lived from 1820 - 1880, and the original might have the same patterns as the latest version, but trying to go back and credit her is a bygone thing, and that's for a whole song! Taking so small a piece that can occur of natural human volition and claiming rights to it is simply like trying to own the color medium blue.

Should Gary marry Marie Osmond?
Well, wacko can be good at times.. Gary doesn't mind - he thinks she just needs some TLC from a normal person. And he's OK with the doll fetish thing.. :P I'll have to do a search on Marie..
