The Official Exam Thread
Thermodynamics are Cool !!! :) Study well, and you'll do just fine!;) The basic rule of thumb: PV/NT=PV/NT. Ideal Gas laws are pretty close to real gases. A mole is useful to understanding the real thing - 6.022 X 10^23 g/mole, and 14 grams per mole for water? I'm rusty. Average, without the isotopes and electron weights. Lord Kelvin's Absolute Zero - it's Absolutely cool! And did you know that if we went with all Diesel engines, even for gasoline and alcohol fuels, the efficiency would go up dramatically because of thermodynamics? Which law of thermodynamics is being applied here? Remember: Hot side of the engine vs. cold side. The greater the difference, the closer to ideal efficiency. Bonus Question: what limits prevent engines from reaching the theoretical maximum efficiency, and where do you think the biggest gains can be made? PV=nRT for conversion to normal pressure and temperature. molar equivalents. Extra Credit: Why are steam engines so inefficient? :P In Semester III, we will be discussing the actual molecules as they bounce around in a cylinder. Partial Derivatives will be used, and all will be either baffled or amazed.:laugh3: Better learn Calculus really well too!

Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism
Since we are all a product of what society, that is what those individual or collective influences have given us, then it seems fair to say that ideas/feelings/thoughts can and do resonate, or can be created almost simultaneously within the body and mind of one without any real intent to copy the works of another. Or, it's done all the time anyhow, and to say it's original is to search for the first DNA molecule, and the first cell. Totally ridiculous unless it's almost verbatim. If this same litmus test were put to, let's say, the Beatles, then they would have been sued countless times by earlier R&B's artists they really did copy; or the previous artists that those artists copied, and on down the line to old Aunt Sally's tune sung in the hills of Carolina in 1860. But really, it's all like sparrows complaining that their song is being used by another. Like the fleas arguing who owns the dog. In 10,000 years, only art historians will have an inkling of what this is all about, or what this indicated about human society at the time.. Like us discussing whether Mozart had a tiff with Marie Antoinette over a particular sonnet that made some social statement about her relationship with the archduke of Glastonbury..:P

THE **I LOVE HARRY POTTER** THREAD
18 - hey, she's still a kid yet! I think we need to get back to movies that are more substantive and imaginative - that's why Harry Potter's so successful - there's plenty of canvas for the mind's eye. What a bizarre question to ask in the first place! Julie Andrews must have been at least 22 before she starred in her first topless movie, and then the suspense was what made the movie great. Anyhow, just 22 cents.

What Time Is it and what are you doing ??
Cheer up in the Down-Under there twistedCLOCKS! Hey, it was a lovely -24 C the night before last, and we're set to get 8 - 14 inches of snow (20 cm ++). I'd be soo happy if it was warm enough to rain!! (and I do occasionally munch a bunch of cereal like that too - at least it's healthy!) The time is 9:57:33 PM and I'm contemplating the driving forces of the universe.

1000 Things You Can Do With An Egg
That's better! 648 using a giant precision pantograph, create an exactly shaped duplicate egg in plaster down to the minute surface details, on a scale of 1:50. Put this in the yard, and allow lichens and moss to grow on it.

Anyone ever heard David Bowie's 'Laughing Gnome'?
Ian, interesting you should mention Bowie - I had for some strange reason been thinking for the past day how similar Coldplay's songs and style are to Bowie's - especially Bowie's delving into some deep subjects with a kind of detached presence, like Golden Years' "..run from the shadows.." and Coldplay's "little white shadows".. etc. Strange how we could be operating on the same wavelength! It must be seasonal memory timing or something like that..
