here's the thing...i feel like with coldplayers alone there has been such a great amount of confusion over the matter, and that coldplay.com has not set any of us straight. this has given me hope it will be on there in some capacity. idk i could be wrong. its just a hope really. i just feel the website would make some mention of this. make it very clear.

Is LeftRightLeftRightLeft the song going to be available to download too? I'm slightly confused about this. I know this is a track they didn't release, but none of this stuff seems to suggest that it will be released as well. If that is the case...then why is the album called LRLRL?

wow this is incredible. coldplay have truly given their fans everything since the beginning of the viva process. i have never felt so like...thanked for being a fan. they go out of their way to do great things for us. we really do support one of the nicest bands in the business. when you like someone's music you rarely think you're going to get anything back than they already give. coldplays music has healed me and brought me to tears. i owe them, not the reverse. the fact that they show so much dedication to their fans and remain humble despite all their success just makes you love these guys even more. ill be in the crowd at saratoga on may 27th, so ill be lucky enough to get one of these. my first concert and it comes with a free CD. WOW. im really happy i stumbled upon these guys 7 years ago. theyve changed my life. thanks coldplay.

I would say A Whisper and Twisted Logic are the only two Coldplay songs that I just HATE. And actually...no I don't hate Twisted Logic. I do H A T E A Whisper. It's one of the worst songs in the history of songs. Thats an embellishment, but really...that songs BLOWS.

I'm so happy. Some connections at Live Nation meant I'll be able to be in the first 6 rows. Not sure where yet. This is so definitely the best moment in my life related to music. I mean...it is my first concert. My first concert, coming from the band who introduced me to the type of music I now love. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOWOW. :dance: I'm so happy to be able to go to this show. It's only forty minutes from home, so I couldn't be more thankful to Coldplay for making this happen. I've been waiting so long to be able to see them.

I know they're going to do I'll Go Crazy...eventually, but I really wish they didn't or that they at least threw that out without a big who-rah. i think breathe can be the best single from this album. its one of those songs that has this universal awesomeness for me. i really cant see why anyone wouldnt like it. i think its a far superior song to magnificent. i hope breathe is given a good build up. u2 really can't afford to drop the ball too tremendously. magnificent is a sure fire hit, but it won't be too big. it doesn't have something that makes it really stand out. it's a very ordinary song - why its a single to be honest. its safe. breathe is the type of song that i know will be a single, but i feel like it has this heart beat that the best u2 songs have. this thing that just makes it some incrediblely powerful. its really bono at his best on this album (along with moment of surrender for me). the thing is...if u2 is actually putting out an album in a little under a year than they probably won't need too many singles from this album. i bet they'll put out "every breaking wave" before the album and during the tour, so that'll be there. it makes me think they might not have more than GOYB, Magnificent and Breathe. Based on the way Rolling Stone (or was it Q or NME? I forget) described it, it sounded like an absolutely classic U2 song. Edge doing his thing on guitar. I really do feel that their next album has to be a savior for them, and that they'll go to it quickly if need be. NLOTH is just not doing well enough. I don't think U2 is on the decline at all. I think this album was just a misstep. That doesn't mean its a bad album, on the contrary I think it's very good. The album just doesn't have the coherence of their best albums. It's all over the place. Hopefully their next pulls it together.

This is something I've tried to do many times in my head. I love many bands and many of many bands albums, but its always been so hard to figure it out with Coldplay. I think I've effectively come down the Viva la Vida frenzy, but I suppose that won't totally happen until we get a new album. I'll go from my least favorite to my favorite I guess. X & Y - The first album I anticipated. When it came out it was all I listened to. I loved it. I wore it out. I listened to every track. Well, now...three years on, I hardly give it a chance. I like three songs and love one. There are good ones, but the album bores me. It's not Coldplay for me. Parachutes - It's very hard to put Parachutes here because it really in another format would recieve honourable mention. This is not me saying I don't like this album. I like it very very much. I've bonded with so many of these songs. In certain moments of my life, this album spoke to me like no other. Yellow wasn't my introduction to Coldplay, but it served as the solidifier to a brilliant band. A Rush Of Blood To The Head - My first introduction to Coldplay was this brilliant CD. Oh how I felt like the coolest mother fucker in the world back then. I knew they were going to hit it big. Of course they did (and partially already had), but I knew nothing of it. I mean, 1-5 this might be the best opener in CD history. Better than The Joshua Tree (...maybe not...but close). Than you've got Green Eyes, Warning Sign and Amsterdam. Not to mention Daylight, which I loved for a time. This CD is just so brilliant, and it pains me to put it second. It really should be a tie for first. Maybe it is. It's just this song holds The Scientist. The song that introduced me to Coldplay. I hold that so closely to my heart. Viva la Vida (with Prospekts March) - Viva la Vida...wow. The only album I anticipated while a Coldplayer. That proves how much I anticipated it I would imagine. Well they didn't disappoint. There's no single track on this record that doesnt' have some redeeming value. Even the one's I don't like...ROL...have something. The rest are just brilliant. Then to top of Viva la Vida they come out with Prospekts March (which I grouped here because its really not that different). LIT2, GOW, Rainy Day and NMFWTTG. The thing about Coldplay that sets each record apart is the ability of myself to bond with them. The thing is...the only misstep they've had there is X & Y and even there, I've had great bonding moments. I've never felt detached from a Coldplay record. I've always felt drawn in from that opening track. Nothing is more mesmorizing in the musical world than a great Coldplay album. At my count we have two classic, one great and one solid effort. I can't wait for LP5!

i was wondering what some peoples...erm...impressions were at this point of hearing the album. im assuming most of you have heard it through at least 30 or so times. i guess i just wanted to know where it stood in your mind and against their catalog. for me its a 3/5 stars. there's a lot to like and some things to really dislike. its disjointed often...and it never really lets you in the sound. i may like a handful of the songs, but the album as a whole is quite average for u2.

ok i just wanted to say i listened to in rainbows today for the first time in a least a month or two. it blew my mind how good that record is. its easily my favorite of theirs. sorry for changing a steady stream of conversation. you can all return to your normal routines. haha

^ I like that idea about the getting the idea of the color grey. It definitely comes through to me to. That's really part of the reason I don't love this album (remember folks, love is different than like. I do like this album). The best albums for me are the one's that seem full of color and light. This album seems very dreary. Just look at the Linear film that accompanies it to see that the album is very grey. It's not a terrible thing, but I guess this album reminds me a lot of winter or dreary parts of the year. Whereas, say a Viva la Vida exudes summer and spring. ATYCLB is another album that exudes summer and spring. Think Beautiful Day, Kite, Wild Honey, New York, Walk On. All have a life about them. I would say NLOTH is more of a reflective life. Whereas U2 has often been active before, this seems a more passive album. It's like Bono is talking about things, while not stating vehemently an opinion. So while I like this album, it's not one of my favorites.

anyone see the article on atu2.com about how the album is doing pretty poorly in a lot of areas commercially. sales and radio play time. GOYB was a pretty big disappointment in terms of commercial success...and honestly in terms of most things. ive grown to appreciate the songs merits, but i cant say its a song i would seek out to listen to. i think they would have been much better served by putting magnificent or breathe out first. i dont even think magnificent is that great, but i think itd do better than GOYB. look at iTunes in U.S. store...magnificent is in U2's top five or six or something like that. GOYB is not even there.

yeah i mean. its the same sort of thing. im not sure why it is. i wouldnt say joshua tree or achtung has a great number of classic songs. they have a lot. there's just something about them that stands them apart. i think of this similarly with Coldplay. X & Y has many very good songs, but no classics like Parachutes, A Rush Of Blood To The Head or even Viva la Vida (these songs are going to be classics...maybe not LIJ or Lost! but there are some classic songs). That's the thing. Often times I find I like more songs on one album than another. I technically like more songs on X & Y than Parachutes. But the reality is that I think of Parachutes as a classic not simply because of its age but because there is some quality about it.

The thing I'm starting to find about U2's music is that even though it is very good, there is nothing classic about it. You know when you hear a song and you just KNOW, you just know, that it's going be a classic. It's essentially the difference between having a good time listening to an album right now, and then coming back to the song still in 5 years. I feel there are a few songs on this album I will definitely come back to. Maybe what I'm about to say is bad or not appreciative of NLOTH, but I really cannot wait for Songs of Ascent or whatever they change it to by its release date. The one song I was really looking forward to on this album was Every Breaking Wave based on the Q or NME article talking about it. Not just that, but based on how they're talking about the album it seems more my speed. The songs on this album are just so close to greatness. I guess that's how I'd describe this album. It's like its trying to touch greatness but its coming up a little short. It's one of their best albums top to bottom I think, with a number of solid songs spread throughout, but the songs never break into greatness. Magnificent, MOS and Breathe seem like they could be immortal songs if there was just something more to them or something less. There's always just something that doesn't make them great. Very good, but never great. You know the quality I'm talking about? That "demands-to-be-listened-to" quality. Songs from Coldplay do this to me. Songs from Radiohead. So much of U2's back catalog. These songs do not demand a listen.

Frankly I'm sort of not excited. This is clearly my fault for listening to the album, but I would be pumped even if I had heard it already because I would be getting my own copy, Linear, the magazine and the other stuff. I checked out the U.K. store and saw that one of the bonus tracks was them recording in Fez...which was not AT ALL what I wanted. I wanted some real music. I know they're putting out 13 by the end of this year, which really isn't that long regardless of when it comes out this year because it's not that different than what I waited for for this album. I don't know. This album just doesn't excite me. It's so weird because I like at least 3 songs a lot, 2 quite a bit and there's others that continue to grow on me. It's just not an exciting album for me. It's almost anti-climatic. I have been disappointed by a handful of albums these past 12 months, but I had expectations for this one at least in the winter. U2 just isn't doing it for me at the moment.

Oh Briggins I certainly agree. If we're talking percentage of the songs that are safe vs not safe, its overwhelmingly not safe. My point is that the one's that seem like singles, are the only songs that are U2 being U2. This is not me insulting that nor making it good. Simply assessing how safe the album is. The struck a median between doing what they want and maybe more of what fans want. It's safer, but it's also smarter in my opinion. They don't alienate those who are only going to buy singles, but they keep the dedicated fanbase (likely all of us) interested. It's a win-win.

I think VLV was Coldplay finally breaking out of some of their old shells. It was not a clean break no doubt, but it never could be. If U2 came out with Pop and Zoorapa before The Joshua Tree they would have no fanbase. People can't slag off on Coldplay for not being really experimental. They do not have the ability to ignore what their fans like at this point. What their fans are comfortable with more pointedly. U2 are not really experimenting with this album in the way that will dictate it's success. Think about the songs we're talking about as the standouts. They are the most generic U2 songs there are (I do realize some dislike GOYB). The only song that might be a single thats got a Eno and Lanois writing credit will be Moment of Surrender, and I'm worried that won't happen. U2 took a leap without really anything. No one would have been surprised to hear Magnificent, I'll Go Crazy..., GOYB, Stand Up Comedy or Breathe on the past two U2 albums. There may be slight Eno influences, but they are slight. I do like this album. I don't love it like I do VLV. I think what you said about NLOTH being the album Coldplay wanted than you might be correct, but I also agree with someone else. Coldplay's album, even with a pre-occupation with death, was full of life. Beautiful colors. Beautiful life. U2 is a different beast, but I don't think this album is anywhere near deserving the critical acclaim it is receiving. It is a 4/5 album at best. It's not perfect. Also...in the past when U2 has "experimented" it has been a thorough experimentation. This has been done to ill-effects in some people's opinions (including my own) on Zoorapa and Pop. It has also been done to excellent degrees with Achtung Baby. This album is like a mishmash of U2 being the mainstream whores that has caused many people to hate ATYCLB and HTDAAB and the experimental persons they want to be. It's essentially them saying they aren't just playing it safe because the album contains experimental tracks, but at the same time keeping that core popular U2 sound. I like this album very much. It's just not one of their best by any stretch. It's definitely good.

As a follow-up: I suppose the reasons I had high expectations were because all the reviews by people who had previously thought highly of U2 were speaking highly of it. As a fan, I'd expect to agree more with fans than with people who usually dislike U2's albums. I don't know...there is something tired about this album. It's almost manufactured energy. U2 is all about the energy and passion. When it doesn't seem real I suppose it doesn't work as well for me. It's also that when the music is really working for me the singing doesn't get it done and vice versa. Moment of Surrender is one of the only songs where one triumphs over the other so that you almost forget. Magnificent almost does it in the opposite spectrum, but Bono's lyrics aren't so poor that they really hurt the great tune. Unknown Caller...damn those robot voices. Does no one think that we aren't so much seeing Get On Your Boots grow on us, as we are adjusting how good we think this album is and hence...liking a song we may have thought poorly of before because the rest of the album really isn't that great.

I guess I always had thought U2 had the upperhand in my mind as my favorite current band. I can say quite honestly that I'm with you here. I'm pretty disappointed by this album. There are sparks of genius, but when I think about the album as a WHOLE...I just get depressed. There are SO many songs that I can barely stand. U2's old albums could grow on me - Achtung was originally hell to me, but now its one of my favorites. This album doesn't seem that way though. I know what I like and what I don't rather clearly. Nothing can be worse than that on an album. Viva la Vida it took months for me to come to a pretty solid determinate of what were my favorites. There has to be that battle. There is NO battle on this album. And even though I'm into mainstream music, I'm not that kind of only-like-the-singles/only-like-catchy-songs fan. I like so many of U2's songs that no one gives a shit about. It's so depressing that this album didn't get it done for me. I like some of the ideas in Bono's lyrics, but a lot of the music is boring.

You know I've thought about this album being the sum of three records for some time, but I have to admit completely forgetting that ATYCLB's songs were used on the 90s one. I suppose that speaks to that decades lack of hits. With this in mind I might understand why Bono has said that U2 are releasing another album this year...THE GREATEST HITS CD! By that I mean, we'll get a new album that will justify the making of 00's album. Cause honestly if you rule out ATYCLB, which I think you really have to do, than we're left with two albums. HTDAAB had maybe five useable songs and No Line on the Horizon will likely be the same. Thats not justification. You know what is...!?!?!?!?!?! Five more singles from a new album!!!!!!!!! :dozey: That's U2 for you. I love em (actually im wondering if NLOTH is gonna be a "meh" for me after at least twenty listens) but they really are ridiculous sometimes.

If you could pick five Coldplay songs for your life soundtrack, what would they be? If you feel like giving a reason for each song you can, if you don't feel like it you don't have to. If you have less than five that's fine too, I just figured we should put a cap on it because I mean...we're Coldplayers, so Coldplay clearly hits a chord with us.
