i really can't understand anyone dissing Eno for what he's done so far with coldplay. viva is definitely my favorite album (tied i guess with AROBTTH). the band is too devoted to being popular at this moment to allow eno to do too much to their sound. honestly, we didnt see eno ruin u2 until this last album (sorry if someone liked No Line...). u2 stayed true to themselves for a long time and even fucked up along the way when they tried to go TOO far outside the box. EDIT: too outside the box by themselves. coldplay, and this does not mean they are bland, are never going to go TOO far outside the box. it means they're realistic and they like to have people cheering at their shows for the NEW songs they write, not the old stuff recycled (ala a u2 concert). and can i also say that while i also love and appreciate parachutes, i don't get why so many people are keen or can expect to see the band do something that similar. really, most bands first albums are very far from what they end up being when they have a studio and some money behind themselves. i don't think coldplay will be any different.

i think its nice that coldplay got that general honor. but honestly, this list is extremely flawed and i'm not sure what it's based on. rolling stone says based on industry folks, but what industry folks. i feel that npr has a much better list, that simply lists what they think were the most influential records of the decade. it's quite comprehensive and it has a rush of blood to the head on it. while it's great coldplay got 3 i think they have been seriously underrated. the vast amount of bands that have sprung up in response to coldplay indicates their great effect on music this decade. i think it's a shame this is taken for granted and bands like wilco (i have tried to listen to that album many times - and also i appreciate a ton of different music) get top five spots. idk. i'm obviously a biased fan, but sometimes i think critics have really made a mass mistake in overlooking coldplay right now. when history examines the bands effect on music in like fifty years, i think its going to be pretty clear how important they were. and how completely forgettable wilco is...

this is certainly an interesting bit of information...if it is based on any facts. you never really know with the sun. most of the time we just read articles that take quotes from the band members themselves and act as if they are hard facts. i don't much care about what they say the album will be like, because i think despite what they may say Coldplay are still trying to be the biggest band in the world and album 5 can't let them down in that department. if they want to be mentioned long term like u2 and others, they need to do something not necessarily big and bombastic, but great. as long as they do something great, i don't care what type of music they call it or where it's recorded. of course i can from a "what are they up to" perspective, but beyond that i have no personal belief that they should go in one direction or the other. we know eno is on board (and we've known for sometime), so i have to feel in his dutiful hands we'll be alright. as long as the band make sure he is just producer (and not album fuck chuck like he was on U2's last album) they and we will all be fine.

while i definitely don't want to shoot down this band before it's even gotten started, did anyone think this was a little bit like a bad radiohead impression. this is sort of funny to say, because so many people call coldplay (i consider them very different) that, but the whole sort of...out there mind fuck is a little bit radiohead really from ok computer, kid a and amnesiac. maybe i'm just grouping too simply too. regardless of any of that, i always remember hearing about particular squabbles within the band about song direction, and i am sort of wondering if perhaps this indicates some of guy's more personal interests in music. the sort of radiohead oddness. too be honest i always guessed (with no real reason to believe this) that guy would be more for harder rock formula. idk.

i don't agree with people saying being in a band justifies the scrutiny they receive. i think most people must recognize that Chris gets the attention he does because of his wife. coldplay are my favorite band and are obviously incredibly famous, but there are bigger people out there, and you don't hear nearly as much. i don't think it's right for fans to get into their personal lives. i know some people get...well like one fellow said...attached to the band members in an infatuated type of way. you can't really stop someone's infatuation, but i would say most of the people must realize that to outsiders and members of the band, they're like Mel from Flight of the Concords - a little bit scary. taking too much interest in lives outside your own usually doesn't lead to much personal happiness. maybe i shouldn't get into this as i'm not a psychiatrist or anything. personally i just think we should leave people to themselves. i realize there are jon and kate's in the real world, so some people would be fine parading their kids about, but most people are not this way - celebrities and otherwise. children should be left alone. as for chris and the band. well i think they can deal with loads of individuals having infatuations. it's just the...walking past the house thing or following or whatever, where it gets weird. go and see them where they work, that's fine. it's just a fan being a fan. but when they're not on the job, we should leave them be.

X & Y Won't It Snow

I'd expect something around the holidays. They have a few months to be working. They've also been working constantly this whole tour on new material. They have a break until the end of February and will only be doing the South American tour for a few weeks, so I don't we will have to wait that long. My only hope is that the band are all on the same page. This would be the only reason that a new album wouldn't be forthcoming in 2010 or early 2011 for me. We know Chris is plugging along and that they've been working, and hopefully they are all liking what they're hearing. Perhaps the band will work hard on the fifth album and then not do such a demanding world tour after it's release - ala Radiohead and U2 on some records. That would work fine with me. They've seen everyone, so no one can really complain about not being treated. This way maybe they can just do a short world tour and get to work on LP 6. Don't worry, I'm not getting ahead of myself or excited...just speculating. My hopes are we have something in 2010. Everyone talks so often about the music industry changing and having to be constantly in the public eye to remain relevant. Well hopefully Coldplay can take this to heart while still improving and evolving as a band. Fingers crossed 2010!

heard wedding bells and christmas lights. i liked wedding bells quite a bit actually. i thought it could be one of those nicer love songs you find on their albums. meaning...the scientist, green eyes, fix you, swallowed in the sea, till kingdom come, reign of love (if it were good...), strawberry swing and death and all his friends (the first bit). that sort of soft and sweet coldplay - meaning chris... but yeah, i don't know why that couldn't be on an album. i honestly got quite a nice visual from it all. could be a nice music video. and honestly, songs like this are always very popular with mass audiences if you sell it right. not that that's a reason for us or the band to include it, but simply saying that it's a good song.

where can i hear those two songs you're referring to? i remember one of them might be from the sixty minutes interview, but is that all? personally i wondered why chris thought that would be on an album. maybe he didn't mean it to mean that...? i only wondered because i thought that a clearly christmas themed song might seem weird on a full album. in reality, it's not that odd, but it's just that we're so used to the idea that if a song mentions christmas it has to be listened to then. but we have no problem listening to violet hill in the summer despite "a long and dark december". i just want coldplay's 5th album to continue their evolution. i mean that musically and creatively. whether that means incorporating jazz like drum beats as we've heard or simply writing an album that's a story or whatever, i don't care. i'm sure they'll do something great. they've had one setback in their career (X & Y - sorry people who like it! i like a lot too, but critics panned it), and I think it's just upwards from here. until you know...they're older than 33. :rolleyes: i would enjoy a christmas album though. that sixty minutes thing was what, a year ago? the band are in studio? they have a tour soon but will be basically done for awhile before december? CHRISTMAS EP PERHAPS!? a new song would be nice though. (actually, it might be smart to have a christmas ep for just popularity reasons. every great christmas celebrating band has usually had some popular christmas song that's gotten radio play. coldplay have done christmas songs, but maybe they can have a hit one? that'd be pretty sweet)

OK! I just got back from the concert!!!!!!!!!! My first EVER COLDPLAY CONCERT! ONE I HAD TO WAIT MORE MONTHS THAN I WANTED TO FOR! Needless to say, I wasn't let down! I really worried the crowd would be bad though. Just from looking at this thread you can see how few "true" coldplay fans are attending this concert. It took a long time for the inside part of the ampitheater to fill up. Elbow played to about 50 people and the lawn crowd. Well by the time Magnificent and Jay-Z and I'm not sure what classical piece it is but it's one I love and am annoyed i don't know the name to, the band came in. I didn't expect the light swingers (what I shall call them), but they had them and they were quite spectacular. Really all one can say about this concert is it's design and aesthetic. The music was great with the minor hiccups to be expected. Chris swore and kept it light and funny admist all the earnestness of the music. I was just taken aback by how perfect this concert was planned. Lovers in Japan was by far the stand out. One many have grown to love in concert. I thought they hit everything out that they could. Chris was in a great mood and kept apologizing for missing the original date. But we wouldn't expect anything less. All in all this was a wonderful experience. I'm sure someone else can give you some more insight, but I'll prefer to look back on this as a collective. It really was quite an amazingly blissful experience. Even though I was one of the only people there who could sing the words to every song, the crowd came through. And behind it was Chris, Jonny, Will and Guy. The did a great job. Viva la Coldplay!

And I'd say the album I like least is X & Y...and there are a lot of songs that I don't like now but once liked. So I won't count them.

well guess what coldplayers. coldplay coming to spac really was too good to be true for me. my girlfriend got tickets to a mets game for an early birthday gift the same day as the rescheduled concert. and ive never been more torn. the thing is i can't see my gf much over the summer, and i'm a big mets fan, and it's too much too pass up. it wins. but now i have to miss the band i've loved since i was 12. that finally come half an hour from my house. that i finally get to see. ive been looking forward to this for months. this would happen to me. all this really upsets me. im like...pissed and upset and happy all at the same time. i don't blame the band. chris got sick and all. its just...i blame my luck. i really want to be pissed at the band though. the best fucking chance ive had. like...im devastated.

well i was having a shit day before i found this out and this was just spectacular news. i was actually pissed at coldplay and chris for about 1/2 a second, but that subsided. i was generally annoyed at my lack of luck. my first concert...postponed. i thought i was lucky for them to even be coming up to saratoga, but it turned out it was too good to be true. actually this is probably a good thing (unless they just cancel the concert - which would like lead to either :veryangry2: or :( reactions on my part) if it means we'll get a better concert. i also feel bad for chris and the band. they've been pushing themselves to the limits. its unfortunate that limit had to be my show...MY FIRST SHOW...but its ok. i just hope coldplay doesnt let me down with this. i dont consider chris being sick a let down. but cancelling the show and just giving refunds would be a big one. i really dont want anything like that to happen and for it to skew my feelings about the band. id prefer to continue to bow down to coldplays greatness rather than be annoyed at them.

add Coldplay luck...they deserve a great audience. for gods sake they came all the way to upstate for us! in some ways i sort of felt like it was for me! :) funny to think but i was just so happy!

i know!!! tell me about it! i'm from here and a lot of my friends are going. basically im really worried this concert in terms of fans is going to BLOW. like HUGELY. some of my friends are pretty solid Coldplay fans. they know the songs, the words, etc. but they aren't like...well a diehard like me. and in comparison to a lot of people here i'm not even that diehard - but thats a tough comparison! im just worried. i have been for a while. well my face was fully aware of what angie was up to. ive been around this thread for about a year...so i know the schtick. :laugh3: that being said ill have to decline taking part in that. anyways thanks for the help though. i really thought id get bitched out and told to check another thread. thanks for not doing that. :) i will definitely keep all these things in mind. for merchandise and the cd what should i do in more detail. im going to be not too far away from the band, so idk where that will put these things. either way. im SOOOOOO pumped to be going to my first concert. this will be SO great. also someone said the concert was 90 min? is that even possible?

Hey obviously I'm a big Coldplay fan. Have been for 7 years, but this is the first concert I'm going to (Saratoga). I assume there's a list of to do's for a big Coldplay fan, but if anyone could let me in on some. I'd really appreciate it. Or just point me in the right direction. Just one question I have that I assume most will know. Show starts at 7:30, when should i get there?
