uhhh I think Arcade Fire and Coldplay are pretty different bands with pretty different influences. although I would say, Coldplay does count Arcade Fire among their influences (look no further than Markus being brought in) and that should speak to something. not that Coldplay aren't a great band, but they're a more mainstream band so they bring in less mainstream sounds. less mainstream doesn't really bring in mainstream sounds... that said, i love both bands for different reasons and my love for Coldplay so exceeds are all other bands that in my mind comparisons are pointless.

that's quite sad. and i'm just now listening to this lukas track...WHY DID COLDPLAY LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO i mean, i find it hard to tell if it would have been that great, but i can tell it certainly would be better with them behind it

I too disagree about the mainstream thing. Coldplay's music didn't get more mainstream. And the Jay-Z collaboration was fun in my opinion. They don't need to take everything so seriously. ANYWAYS! For - There aren't many bands who do so much for their fans. And of course, the music and the tours and all that. Against - LIVE DVDS!!!!!!!!!!!! ARGHHHHHHH. Come on Coldplay, it cannot be that shit. It's you, you know.

i never really understood the term emo. when i was in high school it meant kids who wore black and didn't talk much. they also had many piercings... but if emo is supposed to be short for emotional, than i think we can all agree that coldplay are an emotional band. the music is emotional. the lyrics are. they can make emotional music and be an alternative rock band too. but, honestly today, there are so many different types of rock, i'm not even sure what is just plan rock anymore. if we cannot agree on anything, i think we can about coldplay being an amazing band

I agree with all of this. The band hasn't "sold out". It's crazy to me that people would think that. Honestly, doing one song with Jay-Z does not mean they've sold out - especially when no one outside of us even knooooooows they did it. It wasn't a radio release. I'm honestly surprised by a lot of fans on this thread, for not seeing the emotions of songs on VLV. Truly, Chris has grown up folks. I don't mean that it any way like, he's beyond writing ballads. I'm saying he's at a different stage of his life. He has a wife, so there aren't any Shiver's coming our way. He has a wife so there aren't any The Scientist's coming. There were songs like Fix You, A Message, Swallowed in the Sea and Till Kingdom Come. FOUR SONGS ON ONE ALBUM ALL DEVOTED TO HIS WIFE. AND, on this last album, his emotions were more complex. He was worried about death. He was worried about a lot of things. It wasn't all art. The songs Strawberry Swing, Life in Technicolor 2 and Now My Feet Won't Touch The Ground are all tremendously emotional. Except in that feeling of bliss. I think it's perfectly fine that there won't be another The Scientist. It's my favorite Coldplay song. But I'm happy without them trying to imitate it. ALSO. I think people are forgetting that X & Y was easily the album that had the least organic feel. It was a studio album in so many ways.

It's funny the thread starter should say that, because a friend of mine mentioned this when X & Y first came out. At the time I disagreed but I came to see they were both very similar in basic construction, if not "sound". That said, I'm one who wouldn't have Speed of Sound in my top 20 songs. I never really listen to it at all, despite my initially liking it very much. Clocks was never as big to me as it was to others, but at the same time I think it is an amazing song.

:shocked2: :thinking: Well, I think based on all we've seen Coldplay are going to try to diversify. We aren't ever getting albums like Parachutes again. Maybe songs like ones on there, but not a full album. I, personally, think that's a wonderful thing. And I love Parachutes. But I love change.

YES! All the people here who do not hate Coldplay for trying new things please raise your hands. It's not as if they go out and make music that's anywhere close to hip/hop or rap. Their Jay-Z collaboration wasn't even on the album. I imagine any work they do with Swizz will involve him doing what he does...making a beat. I'd be surprised if we honestly even recognized he worked on a song with them. I'm not at all worried about this. It'll be nice to hear what Beats cooks up as a b-side or on an EP.

It is quite amazing! :) And even if you had liked the album for completely dissimilar reasons, it would have just been great to see a positive thought because it appears a lot of people aren't big fans of it (more than I had previously realized). But I guess we can thank Coldplay and Coldplaying, the band for causing such a strong reaction and the site for bringing those reactions together. I also see you're from the DC area, which is where I attend college. I think, not to get too off the thread topic, that you can tell a lot about Coldplay fans from what albums they like. I've noticed a few different groups pop up in terms of which albums they like and don't. Also the vehemence with which they hate an album. There are those that only like Parachutes and AROBTTH. There are those who vehemently hate X & Y (and a larger subset that just remember it less fondly than the other albums). And I suppose there are those who hate VLV. Then, obviously, within those there are people that like different combinations. For example, I think Viva is a masterpiece, AROBTTH is a masterpiece but in a different way, that X & Y is mostly pretty paltry but that it has some excellent songs in there, and that Parachutes was a perfect start for a band I now call my favorite. That said, I think the groupings sort of have a lot to do with how people listen to music. I see a lot of people who seem to pine for the Coldplay of old, but still (from being on this thread) have quite a passion for them. I'm the most surprised by these people I suppose, because I feel like as a music listener I have not fallen for a band that much in their first 2 albums that I would still care to follow them in hope of a return to a past sound. I suppose that speaks to the appeal of Coldplay, which is an amazing thing. But it must be very tough to be disappointed by their newer albums. Then there are people who want them to do new things. Not part 2s of past albums. I fall under this category. I loved that Viva seemed like a record that wasn't coming from stagnated musicians. It was so vibrant! I want that new feeling again. I completely agree you, jelynch2, they need to do something completely different for LP5. I certainly hope they do and that it comes off as a new masterpiece. Although I'll be happy with even just very good.

I'd be a fan since 2002 and I had gone through an initial love of X & Y and then quite a falling out with the album over time. Needless to say, I had never been more excited for an album in my life when Viva was on its way. I joined this site around that time. I learned lots of new things. When Violet Hill came out and I heard it on their website, I was initially taken aback. It was, in my mind at the time, so very different from all their other songs. It seemed harder and louder. Of course, I was thinking that not having listened to Politik in a while...:rolleyes: Anyways, when Chris brought that song home on the piano at the end, I was hooked. I literally listened to that song a hundred times before Viva (the song) was released next. Over and over again, out loud. It drove my family crazy. Then Viva came out and I felt the song. I have to say, I never felt like Chris was that great at painting pictures in his lyrics. He can use great imagery and metaphors, but I never felt any larger than real life in his songs. (To clarify, I mean that Chris's songs are usually quite broad about what he is talking about. I think the only songs that have more story like styles were The Scientist and Amsterdam, and even they were limited in that way.) Viva la Vida and Violet Hill changed that for me. They were...artistic. They were large. The colors I saw when I closed my eyes listening to those songs were amazing. I thought about how I would make the music videos for the song (let's just say how Coldplay chose to do VLV was a bit of a disappointment). I apologize for droning on, but Viva is my favorite of all albums ever (this coming from a Coldplay fan who does not necessarily see them at the center of the music world, although they are my favorite band). When the full album came out, and I heard Life in Technicolor as it rose to perfection to that final "yell" of the band in unison, I could have jumped with happiness. Every song on that album pulled it home for me. Every song had something to offer. Every song contributed to the album in its own way. The reason I find the album so perfect is because it's one of the few albums where I did not skip to songs I liked for at least a year and a half after it came out. I listened to it all the way through every time. Even now, I still find new parts of songs I like. I've gone to sort of excepting the "mainstream" pull of songs like Lost! and Lovers in Japan to absolutely loving them. I would say Reign of Love is the only song the album I skip now (rarely at that). I've said a lot, which I feel slightly stupid about. It's hard for me not to get excited about this album though. I still listen to it all the time. No music has ever been so present in my life. Then when Prospekt's came out, well...it brought it home. The Viva la Vida era is my favorite era of music from any band at any time. And besides a more mixed/positive (rather than simply positive) view of X & Y, I've always loved Coldplay. They've been my favorite band since 2002. After saying all this, I can still say that The Scientist is my favorite song. But Viva la Vida. Well, I've heard no album as perfect.

i'd love to see an a compilation live cd. i imagine this most be in some way about quality control, so you'd think if there were two whole tours of footage available they could find a few songs that look good filmed. i really don't understand why they have to be so difficult with this stuff. honestly, u2 has put out so many friggen live show dvds it's becoming a joke. but these have been fantastic tours that were fantastically attended. i just don't understand what could be so bad about the footage that they'd hold it back.

Why does the band that put out the best album of 2009 have SO FEW REPLIES!?!? I guess I need to spend more time in The World of Music area, because it's not getting the love it deserves. Phoenix are an amazing band. I'm so happy I found their music!

Vampire Weekend and The National are playing together somewhere?!?!?!?!?! :shocked2: First post in this thread, but I've got to say The National needs to get some love on these message boards. Truly one of the great great bands that don't get any mainstream attention. Of course, many people love them for that very reason, but they're just great out and out musicians. Some Coldplayers really should check them out.

Gwyneth's website sort of made me laugh in this amused-surprised-not sure i should be laughing as I love Coldplay and wouldn't want to insult Chris's wife- way. I just hoped there could be a brief discussion about this site and whether people enjoy it or do not. If this should be in the Gwyneth thread so be it, but I thought it was funny/odd/unique enough to stand alone. (I...uh...have also never been in her thread...so I wasn't sure if this was discussed) The "..." are present because I wasn't sure if it would be considered sacrilege to not have been in that thread. X & Y was as fresh as any album for me when it first came out, but it quickly died. Today, it's still mostly a dead album to me. I say that in the sense that I felt like it had no life. I get bored listening to X & Y. Even the songs I really love from it aren't that interesting. The end of Fix You and A Message were the only songs that I felt had true life in them. The Hardest Part and Swallowed in the Sea are personal favorites. And I've loved The Hardest Part in acoustic live. That said, I think Eno being back as an influence is an excellent thing. I said this in another thread already, so I apologize for repeating myself. But I'm a pretty open minded music listener. I like new things, new bands and new sounds. Eno brought that to Coldplay. What was old and stale found new life. That's what Viva la Vida was to me - ALIVE. The emotions were more complex and perhaps less syrupy. But honestly, I think the emotion found it's way into the music perfectly. Strawberry Swing is bliss to me. The self reflection of Viva la Vida (the song) is there in spades, even as the music gallops along. Same with Violet Hill. There are lines in each and every song that are emotional to me. Throughout the trio of SS, LIT2 and NMFWTTG, the line "now my feet won't touch the ground" is repeated. Chris has reached this blissful state because his children (SS), his wife (LIT2) and the band/his friends (NMFWTTG). To me, Eno brought life back to Coldplay. Excitement. He got me excited. I'm happy he's back, and I'm happier it's in a limited role. He gave them a list of rules and thoughts and now they're on their way. Coldplay have loads of ideas, they just need the structure to reach them. Eno gave them that. I can't wait for LP5 because I've never been able to wait for any Coldplay album. But I have high hopes. And what everyone needs to know is, Eno won't let Coldplay stagnate. So don't expect VLV part 2. For all those who didn't like it that much, that should be good news.

Agree, but amplify it. Coldplay has had one minor mishap imho, and that was X & Y. Nevertheless, that mishap produced like 4 songs I love and 2 more that I think are great - so Coldplay mishap isn't the same as normal band. Either way, I'm quite sure I'll enjoy whatever they put out. They seem excited so I'm excited. I like that Eno's influence more than his presence is dictating this album. I LOVED VLV, but I think they might grow in a new and interesting direction now. Simply put, I think this means they won't stagnate. X & Y was a stagnated record to me. It seems like they were out of ideas. I really don't believe that will happen this time around.

im really excited because i'm going to be studying abroad next year at royal holloway, and will be in london often. hopefully i'll enjoy some sightings!

Yeah not every song was included. The Scientist (surprisingly) wasn't among the songs on the CD.

I apologize for the caps, but I hoped I might catch someone's attention. I've been looking for a rip of The Scientist from the Live 2003 DVD in mp3 format for years now and have not found an up to date link that I can access the song. I own the Live DVD but I have no idea how to rip or do any of those things. If someone could help me, and please not act annoyed at me posting here (believe me, I've posted this many times in multimedia forum), I'd really be so incredibly thankful. The Scientist is my favorite song and I don't have a live version of it, and I truly wish I did. Thanks for any and all help! :)
