No no I wasnt saying that everyone into one genre of music will think a band in another is unoriginal. I'm simply saying that it's a lot easier to group a genre together and call them unoriginal if you like another genre. I certainly do it. I think Britany Spears, Rihana and Pussycat Dolls all sound similar. I guess I didn't explain myself too well. Unoriginal simply means they dont come up with their own ideas. Well musicians are constantly influenced. Everytime an album comes out, an interviewer always asks the bandmates what they were listening to while recording the album. So if you really think about it, no one is completely original. Originality comes in nuances.

I'm a huge Coldplay fan, but I would not call them musically the most original band out there. When you exist in the rock/pop spectrum, you're bound to riff off someone's ideas. Without The Beatles there is no Coldplay. Without U2 there is no Coldplay. Possibly without Radiohead there is no Coldplay. I think band's can be artistically creative, which would come off in music videos and production value for album covers and websites. I don't think this is a ditraction. I would not call Coldplay unoriginal, because I think music in it of itself is not something that usually allows for originality. If people who listen to mainstream music call Coldplay unoriginal, well they should be slapped. :laugh3: But if someone who listens to music that seems out of this world calls Coldplay unoriginal, well from their perspective it may be true. Within the pop genre Coldplay may be differentiated, but for those who listen to metal, well maybe it all sounds the same. People tend to call people unoriginal when they don't understand the nuances (assuming they exist) of a certain musical style.

essentially its violet hill. you can indeed compare a song thats been out for months to one for days. yes you can say a song may not have grown on everyone, well thats hardly relevant. Get on Your Boots is good, but Violet Hill is pretty great.

i like the song, but i dont love it. its not U2 for me. i definitely appreciate its fun aspect, but its just not the u2 i love. i expect some of the other other songs will add a little more rock and roll type u2. i feel like this song is sort of a sad attempt to appeal to young people. like a very sad attempt. bono said they were going after younger audiences with this record, and i see this as the starting point of that. i really hope we dont get a lot of that. bands that shoot for an audience...well they tend to fail in their eyes and in the majority of their fans eyes.

I was at the concert. I'd never seen u2 and they definitely didn't disappoint. What was disappointing was that I was one of the only people in the crowd who knew the words to the songs...or at least the people in my general area. It would have been awesome to get everyone behind them. I was belting away with Bono though. It was pretty amazing. Edge was in form. It was just fucking fantastic. It was funny, cause at one point Bono tried to get the crowd going, but most of the people had no idea about the song...and it peetered out. I want to watch this on tv later, or hopefully just see a taped version at some point (you gotta believe they'll find a way to sell this - id definitely pay), because the awkwardness was unbearable. All in all just tremendous. I wish I could have seen U2 with some real U2 fans around me, but as it was I'm pretty happy. I got to see The Edge do work, and that was pretty fucking brilliant. (haha sidenote: wasn't just there cause it was a concert. been a legit Obama fan since '04.)

Idk what that's (^) about but I think miscommunication was at hand. Well I'm in DC and I'm really hoping that its not too crazy on Sunday, so I can see Bono. I mean...this is like a once in a lifetime chance. Well for me it is because I haven't seen a U2 concert as of yet. It's not U2, but Bono is pretty cool just by himself. My impression on U2's new sound is that I like it when bands innovate. When they sort of branch out. The reason bands like U2 and Radiohead are thought of so highly is because of this. Its also why bands like Oasis are considered shit now. The bands who can reinvent themselves are always the one's worth paying attention to. Sure a reinvention might spawn failure (zoorapa and pop for u2 - at least financially and in terms of mainstream acceptance), but its better than what Oasis has done by never trying anything new and appealing only to their base. I think there's a difference between someone who listens to music and has their favorite bands, and a music lover. Everyone likes music (minus Scrooge McDuck), and of course everyone has their favorites. But music lovers are the people who arent simply satisfied with a band existing within their musical interest base. They essentially have broader musical horizons. U2 appeals to this. I just hope this new album keeps some of that U2 core that I love, but also forces me to see outside of what I thought I loved.

I saw this as a sort of theme to be honest. I liked how it featured in three songs. I almost wonder if the three songs it feautured in were sort of three different reasons why his feet weren't touching the ground (gotta laugh at saying it like that). Strawberry Swing seems to be for his kids. Life in Technicolor 2 talks about love - aka as his wife. Now My Feet Won't Touch the Ground talks about "boys" and must be the band probably. Meaning they keep him above the ground too. So the idea is really just love but on three different levels.

I think its unfortunate U2 has no great fansites devoted to it. The best I've found is atu2.com, and its less than stellar. There are no equivalents to coldplaying. U2 deserve one, but alas.

I second someone's point about my musical interests changing since their last album. Not so much that their 90s work was their best...not so much really imo. I think U2 knows what they're doing and that they, unlike the Rolling Stones and Oasis, are actually good at putting new stuff out - even if it might not be their best. They are always experimenting. I think we can expect something good if not great. I'm looking forward to a horizon with no line.

Yakabu...I must admit I feel appreciation for your work on this thread. It is of the highest quality. I do not agree with your summary of each album though. Parachutes is a great album. A Rush of Blood to the Head is also great. X & Y has at least four really good songs. Viva la Vida is amazing. Despite our disagreements I still say that you are a funny person Yakabu. You have offered me great happiness.

i gotta admit i was really happy when i heard this. grammys tend to go for more mainstream (which we are told is coldplay...and i suppose its true) artists and bands so i think theyve got a good chance of pulling some awards. way to go coldplay

I really just want them to put together a good album, and I think they can do that with Eno and Dravs. I'm sure you guys know that U2 worked with Eno on 4 and 5, and I'm sure thats in Chris' thinking. I understand what he says about getting past 33...except that tends to come from not having new material to offer and repeating yourself like bands are sort of forced to do. I wouldn't worry if I was him. I'd love an album in 2009, but I doubt it's possible...we're almost there for shit's sake. Coldplay's Roadie blog talked about him writing political material around Obama and everything, so if they were to make an album of this they would want to do it while the iron where still hot. Maybe it will be a short album, but if they were as productive with Eno and Dravs first go around, just imagine what they could do the second. They wouldn't necessarily need years to make an album if they were productive.

So based on what the Rolling Stone article clarified, apparently the band (or simply Chris lol) want to put out another album with Eno next year. You would have thought that with all the tracks they have released already (what is it? six new ones including lhuna) that they might have difficulty with a full new album. Maybe this is also why the Roadie blog highlighted Chris writing new material during a break. Do you guys think they're simply being outwardly ambitious and that the material won't materialize until after 2009 or that there's actually a good chance this will happen?

Well I gave it a two. Basically music should not be on a scale in my opinion, you either like it alot, a little, neutral, not much or hate it with a passion. im at not much so i put a two... maybe 3 would have been more appropriate. sorry folks, just not feeling this song in the least. i dont like kylie.

i was thinking the killers could come into being one of my favorite bands, by that i mean top eight. after this album i still feel they make a few INCREDIBLE SONGS, but that their albums are less than substantial.

I would say between 7 and 9 at this point because it will likely either be 7 at the worst or 9 at the best. I think having Lost and Lovers in Japan on this is completely idiotic. I mean they really should have just left those off. Both were represented elsewhere (Lost EP and LIJ music video) so I don't see why they were tagged on - maybe to make it seem like they had more material. I like most of the songs a lot, and I think the one or two I wasn't so sure are already growing. I would have liked to hear more from the songs that were contending for Viva la Vida...such as famous old painters, but I have a feeling we might hear from them. Basically I was thinking the other day about how they seem to making a big deal about Glass of Water, and they also said LIT2 was like a single, so maybe we will get an EP from...the EP. Like Glass of Water and two other songs. Idk, I think thats just me hoping for more Coldplay music. But Prospekt's March, regardless of what you think of it, must be given a great deal of credit for even coming to fruition. Most bands wouldn't take the time to put out something like this. And despite what NME said, they aren't looking for profits when you consider the 250000 they put out. Thanks Coldplay

Well they just got the Bakery for making Viva la Vida. They've been talking about how much they love everything. They talked about an end of 2009 record to celebrate ten years. Also...aren't they on a seven record contract deal with EMI. Don't they need to finish that? Coldplay can't retire. I understand if they slow down because of their families, but that doesn't have to come entirely at the expense of their music.

Yeah he was. I really didn't understand after The Sun's review. I really hope the NME guy is wrong. I'm not saying I won't like a stripped down guitar song, but I liked thinking about a bombastic one.

I don't think they are ever really do well promoting singles besides the initial ones. I realize Lost! was blown, but I never thought much of it anyways. If they wanted to release the song, they should have done the Jay-Z version because it would have gotten a lot of publicity. It's the same as the album, just with a killer verse by Jay-Z...it would have done well. Off the album I would have liked Strawberry Swing to be released, but at this point I think it will stay a fan favorite. For me LIT2 or GOW would be great for radio, and if they work hard to promote LIT2, I think it could be one of their most successful.

I think we're very lucky as it is to get Prospekts March. Maybe they anticipated doing it all along, but most bands have a large amount of material left over after the albums release, and they never release any of it. I think getting Prospekts March might be one of the best things Coldplay has done for its fans. I've never really been that interested in hearing Lhuna, but as for Famous Old Painters, The Dubliners, Goldrush...they've all sounded quite interesting. Maybe they'll put out a 3 or 4 track EP at the beginning of next year, but I think that's pushing it. I have a feeling the "new material" the band was recording after the album release was indeed the finishing touches of Prospekts March, and that with all the touring it would be very hard to devout much more time to finishing up the other songs. If it happens it will be a tremendous thing, but I'm just so pleased that we get new songs in less than two weeks that whatever comes after is just a triple bonus.
