in the post etiaw haze i did criticize coldplay for not making better lyrics, and although i think etiaw lyrically is still bad i've been listening more and more to their newer songs and feel i may have jumped the gun. they seem just as good if not better than a lot of the lyrics the band has put out before.

lol this is a forum and no one could be any less serious. don't worry if people don't believe you. forum's are where people can say and do whatever they want without consequence (except, I suppose, being banned). it's why you shouldn't take what anyone says too seriously and why people don't take what you say too seriously. at the end of the day its not worth being stressed by people you will never meet. we can all be stressed by the people in our lives! :cheesy:

They wouldn't do that. It's one thing to have two songs available for purchase but the others (how ever many there are) could not be on the album. Just doesn't make sense. And also folks, let's remember in all this talk of double purchases that we are choosing in what formats we buy the stuff. I think they should have thought it through better, when they released ETIAW digitally without knowing they'd release it physically - but I think it was just poorly thought out, not a money-making bit of deviousness. Which bands like U2 have been guilty of... I'm sure the ETIAW/MM EP will allow people to buy songs separately. Meaning no double buys.

let me also say that i think we, as coldplay fans, all give the band too much credit for how it plans things. i think because, most of us, are so rapid and determined in our desire to get our hands on information, we spend a lot time theorizing about possibilities the band wouldn't have dreamed of. i'm as guilty as anyone. but after hearing will and guy interviewed yesterday, i get the idea we give the band way to much credit for their ability to plan and, therefore, act in a strategic manner. it seems like they're very much going at it a day at a time. which isn't a bad thing if it means giving us all this new music!

Sorry - didn't mean to lump you into the group of people who think the new songs aren't good enough. I was making a generalization, which is obviously hard to do on these forums as people's opinions are varied and informed by different things. I do know bands don't usually do the double A-side. I think it's unusual, but as someone mentioned, Arcade Fire did it last summer and they have the same producers in Markus (not that that's a big deal - i just mean Coldplay aren't coming at music from a completely different place). I'd just be very surprised ETIAW and MM weren't on the album.

its a whole lot of theories. i realize coldplay has played b-sides at festivals and concerts. i mean to say that before an album is released, i highly doubt they wouldn't want to put, what was in their estimation, their best foot forward. the only reason i can imagine the new songs played live not being on the album would be if the band felt they didn't fit musically. but i highly doubt that. oh and i want to say i've just listened to major minus five times in a row, and i take back any hesitation i had about it. i'm not particularly found of the main chris part (might be improved in the studio version) but johnny's guitar part is absolutely crazy good!!!

okay all the people who think, for positive or negative reasons, that none of the new songs will be on the album need to have a reality check. i think most people fall into the camp of denying reality and some, to a significantly lesser extent, would just like as many new songs as possible. i'd love as many new songs as possible. i just think it makes sense etiaw along with mm, hlh and cb will be on the album. this digital bundle on itunes will probably have songs that have been mixed that haven't made the album cut, aside from etiaw and mm. Major Minus is too instrumental to their costumes/aesthetic for it to not be on the album. I'm with people who see it as a double a-side. I'm positive the other three songs we've heard live (aside from Princess of China) will be on the album. They would only debut songs they thought were really good. You don't go to a festival and play a b-side. And I think all the songs they've played are definitely album worthy - even if I still hope there are better songs up their sleeves. At the end of the day, it's fine to hope for something but its another thing to think etiaw and the new tracks won't be on the album. I'll be glad for the day we have some tracklist confirmation so some of this negative pointless banter can stop.

honestly, anyone who thinks ETIAW won't be on the album is someone who doesn't want it to be on the album. it is most certainly going to be on the album. the band doesn't need to confirm it. after three years away (to most non fans in the world) their first new song wouldn't not be on the album. and all these people talking about buying the song five times or whatever - you're not REALLY buying the song five times. if you buy the cd/lp bundle you're buying it to have it. not to listen to ETIAW. you're buying it to be an "ultimate" fan. honestly, i don't see how anyone could perceive this as anything but awesome news. we're getting what could be two album tracks and potentially more. my feeling is we won't get one's like charlie brown or hlh because they are definite album tracks as far as i see it. we'll probably get some new songs that have been thrown to the cutting room floor. which doesn't mean they won't be good even. it just means they didn't fit in the album. we should all remember that for coldplay, being a b-side doesn't necessarily mean its shit or subpar. it may just mean it doesn't fit linearly in the new album. so i'm hopeful a few more new songs and the studio version of major minus (which if i'm honest I've not been too into live).

Obviously, all of this conversation has to be put into context. From my personal take on Coldplay lyrics, they've never been too great. They're pretty straightforward and on Parachutes and AROBTTH that worked really well. The way Chris sang, the lyrics, etc, all made for very honest songs. At this stage in the game I had really hoped Coldplay's lyrics would start improving. I felt VLV had some better songs lyrically, if only because they were a change of pace from what they had usually put out. All the songs from LP5 so far have seemed pretty bad lyrically. I may enjoy the sound of a pop-like song from Coldplay (in fact I really do like ETIAW musically) but the lyrics make no sense. They aren't deep or abstract. They just don't make much sense. The only part I can possibly get into is the beginning, where I imagine Chris waking up and listening to music - which isn't really that great anyway... The other songs don't sound much better lyrically. I've enjoyed the songs but the lyrics are just...meh. It's not the biggest deal, but for a big fan you'd want to have lyrics worth remembering, and these aren't really. Maybe some of the other songs will surprise us, but if not I have to be left wondering if Chris's new found confidence have come at the expense of lyrical improvement. OBVIOUSLY, don't want to shit on all the lyrics before I've heard them all. BUT I was hoping for some improvement.

i concur. i really like their new style. as i have since i saw the scientist video.

i wasn't sure what i thought about the song live but that's always hard to tell at first. i'd prefer if this wasn't the album title. it doesn't seem like a great one. obviously, album titles aren't that important though. none of their others beside vlvadaahf are incredible to me. i like arobtth. BUT if this is the album title and the songs we've been presented with are supposed to be their aces, i'm kind of disappointed at all this UFO type stuff because it really seems like it has absolutely nothing to do with the album. i realized when we first started seeing things that coldplay don't really incorporate themes that thoroughly, but so far i've not gotten any indication from any of the songs that ufo's or any of that is at all factored in. which i have to say is kind of disappointing. it doesn't have to take away from anything, but i'd hoped it'd all make more sense together.

so that song was called charlie brown??? i may understand the reference (and i imagine it's actually chris being self-deprecating) but that seems a silly song title for a serious band, no?

so i'm obviously loving all this, but are we getting less new songs than last night? i don't remember exactly how the setlist fell in order, but it's just been hlh and mm right? and does major minus mean that's the album title??? not sure what i think of it but that doesn't mean its a big deal

i personally am loving the song but i want to say something to any people who fall in the group of people who think they haven't done enough with the song. for those people who thinks its too big of a change, i just can't understand where you're coming from. i can respect your opinion but not understand it. while i love this song, i also realize it might be the "broadest" song on the album - it's their first single. those songs are always the most mainstream for any band. very few bands would do a radiohead and put out some crazy song - even they don't do that anymore. so i really do think the album looks good if this is the first single. i'm excited and i really love this song!

i've been thinking all week they would announce the album release date with the new single coming out. obviously this has been a good press situation for them, they have drawn people in through facebook/twitter/website and there's a lot of buzz in a lot of circles. Even Pitchfork mentioned it (for those who don't know, Pitchfork are kind of musical snobs - although i like them). Point being, the world is going to be tuning in tomorrow. What better time to announce? Rather than wait for sometime during the festivals. It all makes sense. Hopefully we get a good date. Not something four months off!!! It'd be fantastic if it was within 6-8 weeks but that's just hoping. Sooner than that would be UNBELIEVABLE!!! Either way, I'm cautiously optimistic about the buzz for ETIAW and hope I like it myself!

I second this. Who thought Violet Hill was bad??? I mean, I'm sure some people did. I just didn't expect it... But I agree with Odvan about Every Teardrop is a Waterfall being more poetic than depressing. The lyrics don't sound that depressing. The only line I sensed to be remotely depressing was when he talks about being hurt bad...which I don't think will actually be at all depressing, as its followed by a line about raising a flag... While it's hard to say what the music will be exactly, in tempo and such, the colors seem upbeat and I think that gives the best impression.

oh wow debs is on the forum...ah! i feel like i should reform my responses then...:embarrassed: although i'm very positive about all this news so maybe i need not be! well i hope you can relay to the band that they've got their fans excited. and if the song isn't on the album then i'd feel stupid for saying of course it would be. but i guess one would assume...i don't know either way, horray the new coldplay era is here! and i saw it being packed into the vans and cars only a week ago!!!

of course every teardrop will be on the new album. i don't know whose wondering about that? as for the capitals, someone already answered that for me. some are bigger than others. as for people saying the art and style looks 80s, i believe that's honestly just happy coincidence. the spraypaint is clearly a big part of the album's style and the big bubble letters i get as well, but does anyone honestly think this record was inspired by 80's hip-hop??? with a song called every teardrop is a waterfall as the lead single??? it's going to be coldplay. maybe evolved but coldplay nevertheless. all the folks who keep making claims to what coldplay are or are not have to get back to reality and realize coldplay are whatever they damn well please to be. parachutes and arobtth were both almost a decade ago. the band's evolving without going crazy. that's a wonderful thing in my opinion. although, i'll stress everyone can have their own opinion. so i'm sorry if i stepped on any toes. feel free to feel as you do :)

it seems like T, R, D, P and B are all the letters that are capitalized. i definitely think that's on purpose. every t, r, d, p and are capitalized and not in any specific order. makes me think they must be related to the album title. of course, i could be wrong about what it's related to, but it's certainly on purpose.

this is absolutely fantastic news!!! i really do love the new style of the album. in a lot of ways it seems like an evolution of the viva era, if only because of the bright colors. but i love the way they look. their emphasis on using personal art and design is really quite cool to me and i think something that could come to define them in time. to be that artistically capable is impressive and bold. there aren't many bands that could say that. as a matter of fact, i did criticize the title of the song when we first heard about it. right now i'm in the process of trying to come around. it's still kind of an odd title to me - a bit too schmaltzy. but if the music is incredible it couldn't matter less. admittedly, even if i'm not a fan of the new single (which i really doubt would happen), all the new designs are really exciting me. it doesn't seem like a crazy departure from viva, but its such a cool evolution. and i like the idea of four straight guys being able to do all the bright colors. the fact that they've not scaled back the cross-incorporation of art and style from the music to the covers to what they're wearing to what, i assume, will be the tour design is also extremely exciting. they seem to really be going for the title of big band but they're doing it on their terms, which is obviously the best way to do it (and the best way for a real coldplay fan to experience it). i may not know what to think of the lyrics and i might not even think much of the song, but this lp5 era is really exciting.

anyone shitting on coldplay need to chill the hell out. seriously. if coldplay call their album "monday morning" than it's a f*cking title of a coldplay album. honestly, i wouldn't call that a brilliant title. and i also happen to think it won't be the name of the album. BUT if it were, who cares.

anyone whose really worried about this i'm sort of surprised. i understand general nervousness - which i feel too. but if anyone thinks these lyrics are supposed to be from another world, let's think about who coldplay are. the music might be slightly different, but i REALLY doubt it will be the different you can get when some bands change sounds. if anyone here is a fan of life in technicolor 2 (which i am), they can note this song could be similarly upbeat. the lyrics don't have to be to TECHNO... i'm hopeful and i understand apprehension, but anyone too worried should know coldplay won't let us down

this is pretty exciting stuff. seems like they have to be releasing it on monday.

a lot of people seem to be riding the negative train at the moment. i think some people might be doing that simply because these lyrics aren't very-coldplay. i don't think that has to be a terrible thing. i'm not sure what they will sound like though. a lot of people are speaking to this potentially being techno-ish, i think that'd be hard to read from lyrics. the way something is sung is totally different from they way it reads - which i'm sure you all know but i just felt it need be noted. i'm not really sure what to make of any of this yet. it's exciting certainly. i'm hopeful. it seems it could be different. but different is good. viva was pretty different by coldplay standards of evolution, so i'd love to be challenged by the band.

to the person who asked if i had complained about the boat video...pretty hilarious. you have a fantastic memory. except when you say "complained" i'll assume you mean expressed disappointment. as at that time i had been eager to do the meet and greet the band spoke about. obviously it was a cool experience and one i won't forget - which i said back then too... but thanks, yeah... and i'm sorry to anyone who felt the news wasn't that big. i guess i was just pretty excited at having seen what i did. i understand it wasn't anything conclusive. as for the person asking if i saw what i saw...i've been on this forum for three years now without ever having said much "cool" stuff. this is the only scoop (if you could even call it that) i've had. but yeah, it was pretty cool to see everyone. if they were rehearsing then all of their stuff must have been sent to wherever they would be before i got there. i saw boxes and things and a few guitar cases, but it was mostly people seeming to be shuttled off. it certainly makes sense they would be preparing for the shows though. sorry i couldn't offer more than i had. i guess it was just exciting with everything coming up and i felt i would share. and this happened just this afternoon around 4:00 BST.
