Sammie Lee Smith, who calls himself a “well talented” yet “unknown” songwriter, filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court. He alleges he wrote the songs Yellow, Clocks and Trouble - only to have them stolen from him and turned into massive hits by Coldplay. In the lawsuit, Smith claims he has written up to 4,000 songs during his lifetime and has “recorded approximately 100 tapes, each tape containing approximately 40 songs” since 1976. He did not specify whether his other 3,997 songs were ever stolen by anyone. Smith wants the band to stop playing his hits and is demanding an unknown but considerable amount of money for his trouble. Start of sidebar. Skip to end of sidebar. It is not the first time the English band has come under fire over accusations of plagiarism. American guitarist Joe Satriani filed a lawsuit against the band in December 2008 claiming the band had ripped off his 2004 track If I Could Fly for their own Grammy-nominated hit Viva La Vida. The case was dismissed last September in California Central District Court "upon stipulation", suggesting that an out-of-court settlement had been reached. Coldplay comprises Chris Martin on lead vocals, Jonny Buckland on lead guitar, Guy Berryman on bass guitar and Will Champion on drums. Martin is married to Hollywood actress Gwyneth Paltrow, with whom he has two children. when will they learn :shame:
