23-Jun-08: New York - Tickets, Preview, Meetups, Review/Photos
review Quick summary: Same setlist as previous shows (it is pretty amazing that they don't play longer unless it's for health issues, i can see chris' voice running out pretty quickly if they extended the concert, also jonny was actually getting steroid shots for his hands bc he was playing so much and dvlpd tendinitis) Anyway, they have enough songs to play for 3 hrs straight. All the songs were really good/amazing. One thing i can't understand about American audiences, they get all excited for the band, but they barely dance or move, they just sit there or stand motionless watching the band gyrate and play. U might as well sit at home and listen (or stand I guess). I went to Killers concert in MSG last year, and luckily i became friends w/ a group of Englanders, and man they know how to rock out. One of the best concerts I had been to in part bc of these people jumping and rocking like mad from the get go. Anywho, it was sad to watch some get great tickets and just sit there or stand motionless. alright enough griping... Opening was great, they should have Jon Hopkins start off the synth with them (since he opened for them), but LiT was great, i want to hear the words. VH - not bad, great chorus everyone could sing Clocks - the lasers are back, good Grammy winning classic, although he didn't do the speed up at the end In My Place - oldie but goodie, no run back to the end of the stadium, must be getting old j/k Viva - What an amazing song, everyone went up for it, and began clapping to the rhythm, the woah uh ohho or whatever is a great sing along (and very frequent in the newer songs) Then they were attempting to go acoustic by moving closer to the crowd, but they played Chinese Sleep Chant, which i like a lot w/in the genre, but a lot of the concert goers have no idea who My Bloody Valentine or Shoegazing rock is. It didn't go over well with crowd, that it doesn't have discernible or a catchy hook for the masses. But still a great song and you can see the love for the music they grew up with esp. Jonny GPASUYF - was a good pick me up after chinese sleep chant, it's amazing how many people know the song so well ( i know it was a single, but i never felt it was as catchy as some other Rush of Blood favorites, although it's a great rock out song (lot of foot thumping, thanks Will's drumming and Guy's great bassline) Then, they transitioned back to the big stage w/ Chris staying behind playing the opening to 42, people had no idea what was going on (i'm sure many have not heard the new album or the song for that matter). But it was amazing live, i'm glad they could pull it off (it would be like seeing the Beatles play A Day in the Life live). But people did not seem to appreciate as they were puzzled by the oblique song structure and change in keys/time signatures. but regardless it is amazing and will grow in time for the masses. Now I know some people criticize their last album, but people let's be serious here and honest of course, that album was amazing and brilliant as well, every song on there was good if not great. So, it was a good surprise to hear Square One, what a great opener to last album's tour. Plus, many people recognized it and loved it, a lot of people got up from the chairs to rock out to it, they should play more x & y as well. Don't deny a great album and its tracks (SoS, Talk, SintheS, White Shadows, A message, what if). Anyway. moving on... Trouble... what can I say it's one of the first songs i heard from the Coldplay catalog, and what got me hooked, classic and the audience participation was ultimate, esp. on the bridge. nuff said What a transition into Lost, with rhythmic beat, handclaps, and Chris hopping around like he's in a tribal ritual. People really liked this song and seemed to know it (a lot of them, not including Coldplaying members, of course). it's a sure fire single and will be I'm sure, regardless if people think the lyrics are corny (big fish, small pond, etc.) these guys know how to write hit songs and catchy hooks. I liked it a lot, it really works: organ, guitar, handclaps, rhythmic (almost tribal) drum beats. Now Strawberry Swing... amazing song, makes me want to just drive into the coutnry, or go onto a safari. people really got into it, w/ handclaps in unison, really caught the masses at MSG, i'm really glad, it could be another single in the making, but I'm sure coldplay will hold it back for the album buyers, much like for Swallowed in the Sea. A perfect song to a perfect day.... Yellow acoustic, (they moved back to the other side of the arena to play it, everyone went nuts of course), good rendition and a welcome change from the album version. they need to do an acoustic session on vh1. they're that big now of course, even after the third album. Will sang well, not bad, underrated assist vocal for Chris that's coming to the fore, Good Goldrush song btw. If death will conquer me... or something like that And the encore that people didn't realize was an encore, Fix You - magical, and a great melody lines and riffs despite what the naysayers and critics say. it is their With or Without You. and will be a staple for years to come. Again X & Y is much better than people give it credit for And the transcedent Lovers in Japan, very u2, but just love the opening chords, and the harpsichord sound. The piano/keyboard sound is perfect, and plus jonny's solo is a great topperfor the night. And that was that. no encore, no nothing. 16 songs in 100 mins, could have been better or at least longer come one 4 albums and all u tho Great concert, crowd could have been better as it was supposedly real band fans.. And they need to changeup the setlist, what's up w/ playing the same songs over and over again. I hope there up for their tour. We need to hear Deaht And All HIs Friends, and Cemeteries.

Underrated Coldplay Songs
absolutely agree with Swallowed in the Sea supporters, underrated by a mile, although coldplay was smart enough to play it in their encore. one of the most immediate songs for me from x & y, still with me, want to learn a proper solo piano for it. I really don't understand why even coldplay don't like x & y, it was a great album and will be remembered regardless of the "pundits". Other great songs: See You Soon, For You, The world turned upside down, Green Eyes, Amsterdam, Everthing's not lost, Reign of Love, Strawberry Swing, gravity, sleeping sun, parachutes. aROBTTH, Warning Sign, A message, white shadows, death and all his friends, life in technicolor, the escapist

Single releases from Viva La Vida
Easy for me: Viva La Vida Lost (it was their first song written after the last album, and it has that coldplay anthem feel) Lovers in Japan I would like Death and All his friends as a single, (what a great song and it would be ironic that both title songs get released as singles) but ... Violet Hill was a decent single, but I would go w/ Life in Technicolor w/ words of course or 42 for the fourth.

Hardest Part Confirmed As New Single
One of the worst decisions ever made by a band, When I heard the album leak last year, this song was the most mediocre of the bunch. I hope to god is an April Fool's joke since the single is supposed to be released in April It's a decent song but strictly an album song, this is not going to attract more people. In keeping with way they have been releasing singles in an X and Y fashion (fast, slow, fast, then slow) I don't mean necessarily slow but you know what I mean, the options were definitely: SITS (which should be the next single, A Message, or What If. Not the Hardest Part. Please, Coldplay if you're reading these boards, reconsider, SITS needs to be heard by the masses, it's an absolute brilliant song and will increase album sales for sure. Again, very dissapointed if this is true. hopefully they will release six singles (White Shadows, and then SITS), A dark day in Coldplay history for sure

Swallowed in the Sea!
The best song on the album absolutely agree, It has to be mandatory and in the encore. I got leaked version of the album about a week before, and Swallowed in the Sea was the one that was most immediate to me, This has to be the next single, the lyrical phrasing is amazing and Chris' live piano version is ethereal. This song pretty much has the same chord progression as Yellow. Not too shabby company As for the lyrical naysayers, give me a break, the lyrics aren't bad, they are quite poetic I would like to see the naysayer's lyrics to the song. Anyway, Swallowed in the Sea should be the next single hands down.

Similarities Between AROBTTH and X&Y
I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on that speed of sound and clocks do have piano riffs starting the song, but the chord progression and even the actual notes used in the progressions are not the same. plus speed of sound has a great left hand piano part that adds to the opening riff which if it was only the right hand (like in Clocks), it would be just a simple riff Also, the first two notes in speed of sound are repeated in each bar of music with a descending third note. Add in the syncopated left hand piano part and you have a memorable piano line. And the bridge to Speed of Sound is one of the best (thanks in part to Kate Bush's Running Up the Hill). G A Bm7 Again, there maybe superficial similiarities (such as using a piano to open) but overall, I don't think clocks and speed of sound are as similar as everyone makes them out to be.

What would you like the new setlist to be?
THe acoustic set should any variation of : Green eyes, see you soon, sleeping sun, don't panic, sparks, Tracks that have to be requisite are: Swallowed in the Sea, In My place, Talk, Amsterdam, Fix You, The Scientist, Square One, Politik, White Shadows, Speed of Sound, Yellow, Trouble, Gravity, Warning sign, Shiver, Clocks Tracks that can be intermixed into to different sets: A Message, X & Y, What If, World Turned Upside Down (the new b-side), GPASUYF, AROBTTH, Everything's Not Lost They could have two encores with Fix You ending the last one. But encores would include: Swallowed in the Sea, which should be their next single and included in every set, Gravity, In My Place, Amsterdam, Life is for Living, Everything's Not Lost (could end it too, with extended chorus ending) bottomline, coldplay could probably play most of all their songs as their all quality, this band is truly amazing when it comes to breadth and quantity of that quality. I simply do not understand how X & Y did not get nominated for album of the year. I mean nothing against Kanye and Mariah, but give me a break, Kanye has one hit single (which isn't all that great and the rest is kind of blah), as for Mariah it was like standard R & B singing about the same crap over and over again. My take on the Grammy nominations: For album of the year: U2, Gwen Stefani, Coldplay, Mariah (based on her hits), and Paul (I guess, though I haven't heard the album). song of the year: Speed of Sound or Fix You should make that list easily. record of the year: Again Speed of Sound or Fix You could make that. I mean Carole King (one of the most prolific winners of the Grammys and respected songwriter) even respects and is a fan of The Speed of Sound (though I know there are a lot of haters of the song on these boards). That opening piano riff is so simple but amazing especially with the syncopated bass line in the left hand. Alright enough of the rant, I'm curious as to what other think?

Is it just me or does anyone else not like Gravity
I didn't like Coldplay's version right off, but it has grown on me. It seems to indicate the direction Coldplay might go in their next album, particular with Sigur Ros styling near the end of the song. Both versions are good in their own right. Embrace's is a little more poppy, whereas Coldplay's is a little more ambient and aural. Can't wait for the next album

somebody seems to have shut it down. I got the killers tabs from there before. not bad,

Cold play at Austin City Limits
What was the setlist? What Coldplay songs did Michael Stipe sing on? Just saw the 1 hour version, I wish we could get the full concert somehow. I went to the VH1 storytellers (coldplay) back in may, and they played almost a full concert but obviously they didn't show everything.

Your opinion about Talk.
The 4th single should be In keeping with the pattern of x and y (opposites), the 1st single was SoS (a relatively mid tempo Coldplay rocker), followed up by Fix You (a more mellow organ based song that eventually kicks into high gear) Talk being the 3rd single (which is again a rocker and more uptempo song) For the 4th single it will be a more mellow, slower (I guess more Coldplay sentimental than rocker) so, with that said: potentials are What If, Swallowed in the Sea, A Message. Personally, I would love to see Swallowed in the Sea, (it is an amazing song with melody, phrasing, and harmony of the song, and it's radio friendly at a 4min time limit). But What If might be one as well, along with A Message. It would be interesting to see what they go with, do they a want either guitar, piano, or I guess organ synth on Swallowed based song to be released. I think if they want to show a different aspect of Coldplay go with Swallowed in the Sea. If I remember correctly, Chris said 4 songs on the album were songs that made him go wow, that's something we've never done before, the 4 were: Talk, Fix You, Square One, and Swallowed in the Sea. I think 5th might be Square One or White Shadows. That's my two cents

Everything's Not Lost Live Piano Improv at the end
Hey, I was wondering if any piano experts could tab out or help out with the chords and notes at the end of Everything's Not Lost live, the part where Chris is just jamming at the end. I worked out a part of it but I don't know the bass notes or the chord progression. The notes for the melody go, 4th octave Eb Db B Ab and then back up B Db Eb, I'm guessing a B in the bass (left hand). Thanks, Chris is amazing on the piano, his improvised jams are awesome live (esp. for Politik, Scientist(listen to the one at Coachella)). Oh, another request, Swallowed in the Sea live piano part at the end where it's just Chris. Beautifully amazing, (3rd B, 4th Eb 4th F# 4th B 5th Eb 4th Bb.... something like that) Thanks all (and kapone, I'm still waiting for that Swallowed in the Sea guitar ad lib j/k take your time, I appreciate your help)
