Great analysis in this article!!!! Very similar tricks Explorers plus United States of Eurasia by Muse, and Bohemian Rhapsody. if anyone is curious what Lydian mode sounds like, listen to the Simpsonโs theme and I guarantee youโll hear Coloratura!

Track 12 - Coloratura | Music of the Spheres
I share the same hesitations/doubts, though the patterns of what they choose to play or not play are kind of strange and that means it could really go either way. Twisted Logic is a very normal and good song (though maybe 1 or more bandmember hated it like is the case for Hardest Part). UWTB is not crazy either except for a piano-to-acoustic guitar transition reminiscent of 42. Hypnotised is a great song and would've been easy to perform. Miracles (Someone Special) had a great collab opportunity yet they only performed it ONCE. Also, never playing Fun??? Despite literally TOURING with Tove Lo during AHFOD Tour. What you're describing lenny sounds pretty plausible! In the early days, Queen would only perform the first 2 minutes or so of Bohemian Rhapsody until they created a kickass laser show with backing tracks to do the "I see the silhouette-o" middle section. The orchestral part could definitely go with some nice graphics before the band comes back in for the 5/4 section. Note Will does play glockenspiel though on MX and keyboard-based glockenspiel/marimba on Daddy! ?

Track 12 - Coloratura | Music of the Spheres
Aye. What do we reckon is the most complicated song to perform anyways? Kind of a fun conversation: -I feel like Everything's Not Lost is up there for its length and the sort of "which verse or chorus or refrain do we do next", and it seems like every tour they do it slightly differently. Glass of Water and DAAHF stick out to me as songs with funny time signatures. -In terms of songs where you can really see the boys using their brains and communicating with each other, I think the MX tour version of GPASUYF where they have to time the drumroll-into-Jonny's-riff correctly or perhaps Christmas Lights where the song pauses and they switch from 4/4 to 6/8 on "those chriiiistmas lights". Andeed, Will phrasing it that way could definitely imply Coloratura!!!! On the other hand, Will has more eclectic taste than his grumpy gatekeeper role implies. My memory may be wrong but I feel like he really likes Paradise for example. So maybe he secretly loves BTS. Who knows. As another fun conversation starter - what do we think will be each bandmember's favourite song? Chris - My Universe or HP? Will - Coloratura Guy - POTP because of its likely to be kickass bassline? Jonny - ???

I hear you! That's worth a shot. I don't even own anything that plays cassettes but damnit they're so pretty that I have to have one. I am in the seeming minority that actually likes the MOTS cover a lot, but I just love the planets/Coloratura-nebula. Hilariously, I ALSO get 100% of my Coldplay through CDs with the exception of the Kaleidoscope EP which is an extremely pretty shade of turquoise (the CD is a stupid shade of pink or something) even though I don't have vinyl player. So I can relate. ?

Sorry to self-repost but hoping to get an answer to this? ALSO is anyone interested in trading a red cassette for a green cassette LOL? I want to get the Coloratura case, but want the Floris tape because I have PREFERENCES and love green/teal.

Track 12 - Coloratura | Music of the Spheres
I'm over the moon that they posted this. Really increased my enjoyment of the song in a few ways! -Jonny: you can hear the "mistake" in the guitar solo. You can tell it's not just 1 guitar track duplicated but actually 2 separate guitar recordings superimposed. Towards the end of the solo there's a discrepancy where 2 different notes sound, and one of them sounds sort of incorrect, but weirdly works in the song in context anyways. -Will: he sounds GREAT. The effects on his voice are interesting...it sounds a bit like chorus effect, or perhaps his voice duplicated but with an extremely short delay (which is actually basically how chorus effects work, though some chorus effects also detune the other "voices"). Sounds a little odd on its own but totally works in context of the song to add a lot of texture and stand up against Chris's vocals. I also enjoy they just left in those huge pauses between the "oh's." Something is very charming about that. -Guy: I hadn't realized there was that much bass after the first chorus, but it's there, and it's a good line, especially those little melodic fills. Takes me back to that one VLV-era auction video, "this guitar plays ALL the notes!" I anxiously await this as well. ? In terms of marketing My Universe makes the most sense, but indeed the setting makes a lot of sense for Coloratura. Projecting the lyric video on those abbey walls would be SO PICTURESQUE. To be honest I'm a little worried Coloratura is too free-form to realistically perform as a regular tour song, but Big Weekend would've been a good time to record without the pressure of an audience watching your every move. But I also suppose a click track/backing track plus paying attention to Will might let them execute it, or perhaps chopping out certain parts and doing a short version OR doing a mashup with another song. Lots of possibilities. Otherwise, I share your curiosity about about how the song would sound with an orchestra backing them VS just the 4 of them and some light strings on the backing track, and perhaps Jonny takes up more of the string parts on guitar which there's a precedent for - if you dig up live performances of Yes, Mylo Xyloto, Paradise, and Oceans, these are all examples of songs with heavy string parts that Jonny replicates/doubles/takes over on electric guitar or plays on the keyboard or both.

Question about pre-ordering from the coldplay site - it says ships *on* Oct 15, but if I want to own the CD, does that mean one wouldn't receive the CD until a few days after the 15th? (I'm too stingy to ADDITIONALLY buy the digital download since the CD includes a download card). In the past I've only bought from local record stores but since I'm in the process of moving and I really want the cassette, seemed reasonable to buy off the CP site.

Track 12 - Coloratura | Music of the Spheres
That's an interesting thought! Reminds me of a line from Blur's Under the Westway: "Bring us the day they switch off the machines 'Cause men in yellow jackets putting adverts inside my dreams An automated song and the whole world gone Fallen under the spell of the distance between us when we communicate" My personal theory is that the song is about a utopian world that is welcoming of refugees/space travelers but buried inside a love song / "whoa space is so cool" theme. Everyone before is WELCOMING us now -The US is particularly a place that was built on colonialism and immigrants, so it should welcome current immigrants and refugees the end of death and doubt -in reference to refugees the majority of whom are escaping war "everyone's allowed" -again speaking of welcoming people regardless of national origin, LGBT status, gender identity, race, etc Pluribus unum, unus mundus Likely a reference to the US slogan "e pluribus unum", ie many united as one. Likely an ironic reference since the US is objectively bad at completing upon this slogan's promise (based on its poor immigration/refugee policies, violence against people of colour/immigrants). Unus mundus is the aspiration of the UN, for which Chris is quite involved due to Global Citizen. Overall, I think for some immigrants/refugees, arriving in a new country where you're safe means escaping death yet also feeling like you're in heaven because of being safe. Obviously it's not that simple for many refugees in real life, but indeed this is my theory - that Coloratura imagines a world where we end conflict and are super accepting of anyone who shows up on our doorstep.

Track 11 - Infinity Sign (stylised as โพ) | Music of the Spheres
The LIB synths appear on both tracks so we really don't know yet! They did this on AHFOD too where Colour Spectrum's synths show up at the beginning of the title track, so just on previews it's hard to say yet. Similar deal with LIT showing up in DAAHF as part of the Escapist.

Track 07 - People of the Pride | Music of the Spheres | Music Video Out Now!
I sort of share this feeling but am optimistic. Sometimes Jonny plays super repetitive solos - eg people LOVE his solo in True Love because yes, it has the most sexy heartbreaking bends of any Coldplay song, but also he just plays the exact same thing twice. I also find songs like In My Place pretttttty repetitive. But perhaps these are a symptom of Chris or the band's collective songwriting choices. But of course we know Jonny's capable of technical greatness when you listen to HLH and Up&Up. That is to say, I hope something really big or unexpected happens in this song, like a huge guitar solo, or a bass solo, a radical style change in the choruses. That's why I enjoy early Muse songs that really *go* somewhere like Stockholm Syndrome or Newborn.

This is a fun idea. There's a few songs that are hinted for reworking like UATW and UFO, so I wonder if volume 2 could even be populated with B-sides and alt versions. But that seems like wishful thinking indeed. ?

Interesting theory! My guess is that Coloratura was written at the same time as SJLT, Champion of the World, and Flags based on lyrics, and Hypnotised (esp the guitar solo and piano parts) and AICTAIY (for the chord changes) and ALIENS based on music, noting that Coloratura has a brief 5/4 section that sounds vaguely like the end of ALIENS. So my personal guess is 2017, but you could also totally make an argument that itโs from X&Y based on the space themes!

[sorry to be double reposting here because i can't tell if the Coloratura thread or this thread is where all the action is at lol] What a brilliant song in every possible way! My only complaint is Jonny's solo is a bit short. But my first few thoughts: -The refugee-centric narrative becomes more clear here. MOTSvol1 sounds like a journey for an alien to somewhere that welcomes them. -The lyrics have an interesting common thread with SJLT and Flags, in which there's a lot of naming-of-historical-figures (if you count superheroes as historical figures). It's not my instant favourite way of being as compared to early Coldplay's vague angst, VLV era vague 1800s angst, or Up&Up which is full of fun imagery/literary references. But it works and it's cool. Various stylistic thoughts: -What an interesting evolution of Moving to Mars, Gravity, Daddy in particular. The harps and strings are a great touch. I hope they can recreate all of that live!! Common to MTM and Coloratura and also HP is how much heavy lifting Will does vocally. He sounds GREAT. -A lot of Lydian mode is used in Coloratura, ie if you have a piano in front of you, play an F-to-F scale only on the white keys (as opposed to having a B-flat). You know what else is in Lydian mode? the theme to Back to the Future (and also the Simpsons lol). -Jonny tweeted on the CP Q+A that he was experimenting with a Meris Enzo synthesizer pedal. You can really hear it in the 1st chorus and a few other spots where the guitar is super um, synth-like. Eg the tremolo effect with shifting filter. And later he plays a melody that sounds like a synth but pretty sure it's generated from the guitar. SUPER COOL. -The bassline is so cool! Phil tweeted and referred to it as "waterfall". It reminds me a lot of Explorers by Muse: -The piano is obviously very good. A lot of chromaticism and interesting chord changes very reminiscent of Bohemian Rhapsdody and also United States of Eurasia by Muse:

I don't know why everyone is sad about My Universe being so late. I for one am very excited that Coldplay is going to release something that will likely please the Oldplayers a lot, after so many were disappointed by HP. It's a commercial risk but artistically will round out the leadup to the album very well!

Ahhh so exciting! I feel weird about them releasing the CLOSING TRACK so soon...I always like to keep that as a surprise. So curious about that decision ?! (I guess a similar thing happened with EL though where EL came out quite soon after Orphans and quite a bit before the rest of the album)
