1. Question for anyone who has The Scientist 7" ... I bought one of Discogs fairly recently because I'm trying to get my small handful of very favorite songs on 7 inches and this was a must-have. I don't even listen to 7 inches much, I mostly have it as a collector thing even though I don't collect much (I really, really want to, esp looking at the stuff people post here, but have to stop myself lol). But I do play them occasionally and to be honest, this one sounds pretty bad. I mean it's just very muddy and "loud", particularly noticeable on the vox. Is this typical for this record? It's not the only record I have that sounds iffy now so I'm also wondering if it might be my player, or if it's actually a lousy pressing. If it's the latter, is there any way I can find one that isn't?
2. Awesome! I love this album. Worthless Words and Cheating Death are my favorites but it's got so many gems. I miss Keane more than I can say but I'm really glad Tom did this album. I'm seeing him Tuesday and Thursday, I really can't wait!!!!
3. Glad it helped! ... believe me, I have my own moments of regret or wishing timing had been different, so I know how frustrating it can be. A lot of times I have to remind myself of the same thing I told you. :)
4. Yeah but here's the cool thing ... what you just said in this sentence, that is the same whether you have been a fan for 17 years or one year. Having music that does that for you is, to me, the most important part of all of it. Regardless of when you discovered Coldplay, you've got this wonderful catalog of songs you can turn to for comfort forever. I've been a fan a long time, but I actually can't even remember almost any details from the early albums in terms of promotions, the first time I listened to new songs and so forth (heck I forget things from five years ago). I know I wasn't the biggest or the best fan; for years I didn't go to concerts or join the forums or know every fact about the band. I mean I don't remember much from any facet of my life 16 years ago at all to be honest. But what I really remember is how the songs made me feel, I always remember these little moments where I was listening to this song or that and was moved or comforted or inspired. And it's the exact same way they make me feel now. So, as much as I love all the little memories or nostalgic feelings of old promotions or fan interaction, the thing that lasts longest and strongest for me is how the music moved me and still does. New fan or old, you get to enjoy the songs just the same, and you get to enjoy them your whole life from here on. That said, definitely enjoy the ride as much as you can now that you're on it! Hopefully we'll get some EP news soon, and I hope you manage to get to a show somewhere along the way.
5. Ha, this is great! "Gwyneth's making drumsticks" lol. "Chris falling over" ... I mean these are all making me laugh, I can't even pick favorites. And yeah I'd actually love to see Oldplay and Justice for X&Y haha. Or Leak the EP.
6. Hey, I have a garage they could fit a small runway and even some confetti cannons in. Just saying. And while they're there Guy can finish my car for me, because at this rate I never will.
7. This is so true and a large part of why I just never fall out of love with them. (now watch Kaleidescope be like, grindcore or something ... I'd probably still connect to it )
8. I shouldn't say I worry I won't like it, but more just wonder how much it will resonate with me. I've honestly never felt like they let me down either. I don't want to clog this thread with my life story, haha, but the first four albums practically felt like they were written for me. From MX on I've genuinely loved almost all of it, but just in a different way (though a lot of GS and a few other things were right in back my wheelhouse). I got a little worried before AHFOD because I kept reading it was ebullient, and I feared I might not relate to it at all ... of course it is ebullient but actually turned out to be in a way I can relate to, and really helped me stay positive this year. It's not so much I think I won't like things, I just wonder where it's going to fall on my scale of liking it. I mean honestly on any album there are songs I love more than others, but with the old ones I just didn't spend so much time thinking about it or anticipating it. Also I think it's fair to say there is a lot more variety of styles in what they're doing now, so there's more to think about in terms of what you're going to get. When X&Y came out, I assumed it was going to sound like Coldplay. When one comes out now, it's like, well, it's going to sound like Coldplay, but which Coldplay? Also, I agree with you about the concerts making everyone feel involved ... I never imagined I could feel so connected in a 50,000 person stadium in the 200 section. I do feel like their social media is still welcoming and all, and the guys are so personable and down to earth still, so I feel as connected as ever. But, I do miss those old features and that world ... some of it's probably just me being nostalgic.
9. LOVE this version of Hymn and would also love having a studio version. I'd definitely rather the EP be new stuff, but if they threw this in I wouldn't complain. Man I remember this and it feels like a former life or something, haha. It's weird how different everything was eight years ago and how the buildup worked. For me personally at that time in my life I kept to myself and other than occasionally lurking for news, it was just like, see the announcement from the band and get really excited and just look forward to whenever I got it. I think I got PM for Christmas that year. I mean, nowadays I can't imagine not freaking if it isn't in my hands on release day, and thinking about it every day up until then, digging for news, early glances, etc. It also never even crossed my mind that I might not like it, or any sort of wondering what style it might be or anything like that. Not because I was more positive or anything but I just wasn't analytical about music at all ... it just showed up magically and I listened to it and loved it. :no_mouth: I much prefer having all the hype and people to share the excitement with now, but I get a little nostalgic for the simplicity back then. Ditto. Social media has changed a lot of things, some for the better and some at the expense of routines I loved. It felt like everything was simpler then and there was a lot more build up from the band themselves. It sort of felt more personal? ... which I realize is a ridiculous thing to say about such a massive band. But, I don't know, the R42 blogs and Oracle and stuff just made me feel "involved" with whatever the band were doing. Might just be how I remember it, though, and me changing. On a positive note, with social media I feel much more involved with other fans, though, and I think that's really important too. I mean, that actually inspired me to start interacting here on the forum where in the past I just skimmed it for news or photos. So, it's not all negative and I think there is still a place for message boards. This one is still way more active than a lot of bands' and from what I can tell much nicer. So, keep up the good work. I very much appreciate all the social media and news and forums and multimedia. It's been a crap year for me and Coldplay has been one of few positives ... having somewhere to read/talk about them is great.
10. (not in order) --The National ... love them to bits and the new songs I heard them play last summer were (not surprisingly) awesome. I hope they tour quite a bit too, but not overlapping Coldplay dates. --Roger Waters ... if it's anywhere near as good as Amused To Death it'll be a treat. CANNOT WAIT for his shows. --James Blunt ... one of my oldest favorites, I always love hearing his voice --Arctic Monkeys (?) ... I'm guessing 2018 release but they're reportedly starting work on it. I would expect at least a song or two next year. --Kaleidoscope ... obviously :) Also I know Frank Turner is going to start working on a new one this year, but I'm not really sure the timetable on that. Always great to hear anything new from him.
11. Much as I love the idea, I think they can't because of radius clauses. Unless there isn't a radius clause at Panorama as some sort of special deal to get the festival into NYC. That would be great if they did, although I don't look forward to figuring out parking haha. For the same reason I don't think they can do Osheaga. I'm thinking they might do Music Midtown again. That would get them to Atlanta and they have a big gap in September. There is also Voodoo in New Orleans if the tour stretches beyond the dates posted now (end of Oct). Edit: I guess radius clauses are somewhat negotiable, so they might be able to write the allowance for the MetLife show into their contract, if Panorama really wanted them ... especially considering the ML show was announced a while ago, probably before the festival negotiated its lineup.
12. Yeah, they sort of balked at calling it a breakup and it was de facto categorized as a hiatus, but I go back and forth on whether I think they'll be back. I'm pretty sure they'll at least do some reunion shows, and it wouldn't surprise me if it's this year even. Whether or not they make new albums, or if they'll be anything like they were, that part I'm not sure. I don't think Tom wants to stop writing, which is understandable. I really love his album, but not as much as I loved Keane ... hard bar to reach though. I really hope you get to see a show. I saw them twice, in 2010 and 2012, after I was a fan since 2004 and they were incredible, incredible live. I'm pretty sure they will be back in some capacity, since they have been friends so long. I agree with you here; my sense is that Coldplay will be around for a long time, or at least I think it's reasonable to hope. They seem to be so close to one another and as far as I can tell no one seems dissatisfied with his role in the band. They seem to enjoy each other, what they do, and what comes with it. I just try to not take anything for granted.
13. I can definitely hear what you mean. I notice these sorts of things in other people's songs here and there too and a lot of times it seems like no one ever notices it. An example I can think of is The Last Shadow Puppets "Sweet Dreams TN" (amazing song btw) has almost the exact same chords as Roy Orbison's "Running Scared" ... there's nothing really that wild about said chords so it's believable to me both songwriters came up with it independently. Or maybe it was intentional and they got some kind of permission. I think these things just happen coincidentally A LOT though. Led Zeppelin and The Beatles have been sued for this reason. Oasis was too. The latter two settled and LZ won (that was this year I think?). I wonder how many cases have actually been won by the plaintiff. Edit: Just remembered and confirmed that one who actually lost was Radiohead, for Creep. It's funny no one seems to ever mention that, but people pick on Coldplay for it all the time ... heh.
14. That's why I've started believing it, or living as if I do. I've made the mistake in the past of holding back because I think I can't afford it, or for years I was afraid to go to shows (anxiety problems) so I missed a lot. I'm so lucky I have gotten to see a few of their shows in my later years as a fan. One big thing that changed my mindset this tour was that one of my other really special favorites, Keane, broke up unexpectedly at the end of 2013. It honestly still breaks my heart. I wish I'd seen them more; I just assumed they'd always be around. It's not lost on me that it will be even harder for me whenever Coldplay goes ... they've been part of almost every day of my adult life. So I'm going to as many shows as I can now and enjoy every second of however long it lasts. :)
15. Never really thought of that, I always just figured it was for dramatic effect. I'd have a hard time imaging that was a stipulation of the settlement because of how hard it would be to monitor. But maybe he did it on his own. He does sing it the same way as the studio version (if I understand what part you're talking about) in some performances since the settlement, like Glastonbury 2011 ( ). As I understand they were not required to admit any wrongdoing in the settlement. but don't think anyone knows what the terms actually were? I personally don't think Satriani had a particularly good leg to stand on ... it seems to be a melody that he wasn't the only one to come up with in the first place (two other bands went after Coldplay on this too ... so ... maybe not a very rare chord progression). That gives some weight to the coincidence argument. But I don't know anything about how that kind of case works. There have been a lot in history against a lot of popular bands and I may be wrong, but I think the accusers rarely win. To me it's believable that more than one musician could randomly come up with the same tune, or at the very worst, one could hear a tune and later entirely subconsciously duplicate part of it when writing what they think is there own ... that's an easy thing for the brain to do; I've done it with writing and fortunately noticed it (like, realized a phrase I wrote was something I read somewhere and not mine). I can imagine it's a very slippery area of law.
16. Congrats! It was a lot of fun to read these and brought back a lot of memories and emotion! I've been working on my own but couldn't get it done in time (I write ... sloooow) ... I'll post it for next year lol.
17. It's OK, I lurked here for like 10 years. :joy: I even signed up for an account after a few years and still lurked. I decided I had to let it out and start participating because I was just so hyped over the AHFOD tour and the shows I went to and I needed more solidarity than I was getting on social networks. But yeah, as any messageboards go I'm a usually serial lurker ... because I get sucked into debates too easily and all that ... glad I broke my own rules for once because it's been fun just letting my inner fangirl fly haha. Haha, I never get used to it even though I know darn well it's just a Chris-ism and it will not actually be their last. This time I'm using it as an excuse to go to more shows. ;)
18. Yeah I'm pretty tight on poster space, my AHFOD concert poster and David Gilmour lithograph from this year are still sitting framed on the floor. So I might leave it in the sleeve for now! It just looks so neat. I love the X&Y code imagery, it just brings back such nice memories and it's so bold and simple. I'd put the vinyl itself in a vinyl frame but it weighs so much, haha ... I didn't realize it was so chunky.
19. I thought it would be smaller too, it looks so nice! ... I'm tempted to order one now, if they still have them in the store. But I know if I do I'll end up putting something else in my basket and it will just go downhill. I remember looking at Coldplay shirts in like 2001ish (probably knock-offs), and they were like $20 but I thought "I don't need a shirt with a band on it, I can't spend $20 on that" so I didn't get one ... here it is, 2016, I'm buying pencils with Coldplay printed on the side and a faux Christmas sweater with their name on it. LOL.
20. Awesome! I want all this stuff haha. I do have the festive sweatshirt which I wear pretty much daily and plan to wear through April. I want the mugs too though ... amazing lol.
21. This is lovely, thanks for sharing. I always dig up all these on YouTube each year but it's so nice to have them all in one string. Had a nice Christmas morning but having a hard time winding down back to reality after this week, so this is really nice to have tonight. My sister and brother-in-law got me the X&Y vinyl! ... I got AROBTTH five or six years ago when I stared collecting vinyl but have been slow to add, since I want to save money and I have these all on both my original CDs and also digital. But I really love having vinyl so this is lovely gift. It's so beautiful and came with a big poster I can't decide whether I want to hang it up or keep in mint condition in the sleeve haha. Now I have 4/7 albums on vinyl, getting there! Also, this isn't actually Coldplay-related, but my mom gave me this and as soon as I saw it I said "Oh my god, I can feel like I'm at a Coldplay concert when I take a shower" ... she was like "I know, that's why I got it for you" .... haha! But the BEST Christmas gift for sure was just fate letting me get to Chris's little benefit show in NYC on Wednesday, which took a series of small miracles and was basically the perfect night in every way. <3 Hope everyone had a nice Christmas (or other holiday) and has a good end to the year! It's really keeping my spirits high knowing I'm going to get to see them again in 2017!
22. Also, this picture, I think it was when he was trying to sort out the chords for Purple Rain with the other musicians. The banter in this show was priceless.
23. Oh those pics are great <3 ... through several small miracles I was actually there (!!) but my pictures look like I took them on a 2005 flip phone lol. Didn't have time to charge the real camera, I drove almost three hours to get there. No pictures or words can capture the feelings I had all night anyway! And video snippet: Mobile Link: https://www.instagram.com/p/BOVPhLlhozU/ I'm still not sure it wasn't a hallucination, so I'm glad I have some blurry documentation on my phone to confirm I haven't just imagined it all.
24. You should be able to get a cab pretty easily or just take the subway ... you can take a subway right to Penn Station and then just get on the train there. As others have said, I think you won't have to worry about being safe. Tons of people will be taking the train there and back for the show (and Coldplay crowds are nice!), and once you get into the city, things are basically always bustling. You will be back probably before those of us who are driving have even gotten out of the parking lot haha.
25. Yeah I figured there's no way all of them are getting watched so there's not much chance, but it was fun anyway! I'm guessing they'll break it down by parts of the world and try to pick one each from a bunch of different places. It'll be cool to see what they pick and how exactly they will use it.
