The Damon Albarn thread.
Not in the long shots :P Or the ones like this... Yeah, I felt terrible, truth be told. :(

The Damon Albarn thread.
Wow. That is something. Ha. I've actually offended Graham and apologised on Twitter! :P I wrote a blog article with 50 Blur facts, one of them being that he didn't appear in the Universal video because he was too drunk. I had that under good authority. Not good enough it would seem, as he found out, called it rubbish, explained he was with his girlfriend that day, and told me to get my "facts right, or I'll barre you from my brain!". He accepted my apology though ha!

Local music
Most of our local scene in Oxford, UK is metal. My band, Circuit Chase are one of the few indie bands around. We're rare, these days :(

The Damon Albarn thread.
I quite like it, if you take it with a pinch of salt. It shows the 90s in a beautiful light, and there are some great interviews, but did S Club Juniors and Be Here Now really kill Britpop? Or was it OK Computer/Urban Hymns/Ladies and Gentlemen/Blur? And I thought the inclusion of an Oasis tribute act was a bit piss-taking - where were Suede? Elastica? That aside, I was going to say that the questions they asked Damon were ridiculous. "How did you feel to lose out to Oasis?" Well how would you feel? And then when they were trying to get him to talk about it more, you felt he was covering for someone... I just wonder if that was Graham. Because obviously, he hated that period of his life. Tried to jump out a window. Maybe Damon was protecting him. And yeah, Massive Attack are phenomenal.

The Muse Thread - Hate This & I'll Hate You
New Born was excellent at Reading, I thought, but yeah you're right. It's far too slow live, doesn't have the same effect as on record. They need to start playing Butterflies and Hurricanes, I Belong to You and Space Dementia. <3

They need to drop Plug In Baby. Controversial, I know. But it's getting boring, and they're gonna kill it.

Well, like I say it's difficult with U2, because they've released so much, but the principle's the same. I think if you count live albums too, it has the same effect. Portishead did two albums, a live album, then a reinvention, as did Arctic Monkeys. Interestingly, Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn from Gorillaz have recently said that the next album will be totally different. A reinvention? Maybe. Which album will it be? Their fourth.

Submitted :) Has anyone seen Live Forever? I was watching it the other day (third time, lol) and they don't cast him in a particularly nice light.

Sigur Rós
Don't know if anyone saw - or cared - but Valtari was given three out of five by Q Magazine lately and compared to Celine Dion. Bellends.

The Damon Albarn thread.
A mate of mine knows an indie band, Young Blood I think they're called, who have been together five months, and recently played One Fest. They saw a certain Mr Albarn, but didn't know whether to approach him, because he was that huge and doesn't seem that comfortable in interviews. They did though. He said he thought they were great, said they excited him, asked where abouts they practice, what kit they use, got a few pictures and was he generally, as Lizzie's said before, just so normal, relaxed, the complete opposite to how he is in interviews and on chat shows. I know everyone knows what he's like in real life, but I just thought that was interesting how complimentary he was to another indie band, given that that's probably not his thing anymore.

I was thinking about other bands, and some do this. Oasis: Definitely Maybe = debut What's The Story = building on debut but turning 90 degrees at the same time, contains about three of the five most famous songs (Don't Look Back, Wonderwall, Champagne Supernova) Be Here Now = epic proportions Standing on the Shoulder of Giant = Reinvention Heathen Chemistry = continuing the work of the previous record - with Oasis, that's only in terms of building on the band that they put together. Don't Believe The Truth = return to the old, but still in the vein of post-reinvention. Dig Out Your Soul = Beautiful medium... Well, it was on a couple of tracks, I guess... And the downsize would be Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds I guess :P Blur: (if you discount the debut, just for the sake of this...) For Tomorrow = First big record Parklife = building on big record, but turning 90 degrees at the same time, contains about three of the five most famous songs (Parklife, Girls and Boys, This is a Low) The Great Escape = epic proportions Blur = Reinvention 13 = building on that Think Tank = return to the old (culture-discussing, at least) but in the vein of the new. U2: (Let's start with War, simply because they went backwards with October...) War = first big record Unforgettable Fire = building on big record, but turning 90 degrees at the same time, contains about three of the five most famous songs (I can only really think of Pride to be honest...) The Joshua Tree = Epic (Let's discount Rattle and Hum, as it's a weird kettle of fish...) Achtung Baby = reinvention Zooropa & Pop = continuation ATYCLB & HTDAAB = Back to the old in the style of the new NLOTH = Beautiful medium. And Songs of Ascent should be the downsize. It's difficult with U2 because they've released so much, and in my opinion, they've outstayed their welcome on certain sounds, and should've moved on sooner. Massive Attack: Blue Lines = debut Protection = building on this, turning 90 degrees, but are there five famous MA songs, or is it just Teardrop and US? No Protection = Okay, it's a remix album, but it definitely took trip-hop to new levels. Mezzanine = reinvention 100th Window = building on this Heligoland = back to the old in the style of the new And you could say the recent Burial Vs MA EP was a beautiful a medium... One more, Kanye West: The College Dropout = debut Late Registration = Building, turning 90 degrees, contains three out of five most famous songs (Touch The Sky, Jesus Walks at least...) Graduation = epic 808s and Heartbreak = reinvention My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy = continuation, at least of the pain and honesty in his lyrics and the use of vocoder, singing etc. Watch the Throne = Return the old in the style of the new. I'm not saying it works with everyone, and you have to bend the rules somewhere along the line, but I think it's a pretty interesting formula for a good band, don't you? I'd also revise my original formula and say that you have to start with the first successful album of a band.

The Damon Albarn thread.
Dr Dee has just been slated by Q, who gave it two stars. The reviewer, Tom Doyle, only named one track in the review, Apple Carts, which he compared to The Good, The Bad And The Queen. And he actually made the statement "it's a big leap from Parklife." Really? You think? Any journalist who even mentions Parklife in relation to one of Damon's smaller projects (i.e. Africa, Rocketjuice, Dee, Monkey) loses my respect instantly; it's obvious your knowledge of the man is nothing more than a quick Google when you mention his biggest, least-esoteric album just for a quick comparison. The phrase "hard-going" is repeated three times in the magazine, in relation to the album, and they also imply that Alan Moore fell out with Damon by saying they had "disagreements". Didn't he leave because it just wasn't his thing? Lazy journalism, to quote Kasabian.

"i guess i'm interested in either something poppy or electronic-y as well as psychedelic music or something that's rather repetitive and catchy and stays in your head?" Best MX song when played live
I'm saying Hurts Like Heaven and praying that they drop Major Minus for the Emirates. It's not nearly as good as say, 42 or Daylight.

I don't understand what you're trying to say. If you disagree, say so. Or have you got a problem with the confidence with which I make these convictions? Thank you. I would like to know however why my statements seem to offend people, and why the situation is funny enough to warrant a "LOL".

2012 Albums Worth Listening To
I think it's worthy of a 7 because it's a very good album. It's got 74 on Metacritic, so I'm not the only one. There are a couple of songs that are dreadful, but overall, the songwriting is as good as it's ever been for me. And I don't think I'm that bad a judge. I also don't think much of Pitchfork. They grade albums a lot lower than anyone else in the media. I wasn't meaning to be aggressive by naming so much! I just thought that if you hadn't heard any, I'd list a load for you to hear :P I'm not a massive fan of The Bends. Certainly not their best work. But hey, it's a brilliant album, I just don't like it. Yeah.

Lana Del Rey
I just think it's a really badly-written song. Kasabian's last album was their fourth and it seemed like a massive push for stadiums, headlining slots and to fill the Oasis-sized hole that British music has. This is supposed to be "a heartbreak ballad" but it feels wrong all over. It's poor, imo. But Lana makes it sound right-er.

Well I am right... Unless X&Y wasn't Coldplay's sound pushed to epic extremes, and Viva La Vida wasn't the reinvention. Which bit are you doubting?

2012 Albums Worth Listening To
So I do :P I'm not going by Pitchfork, I'm going by what I think. Suck It And See is easily good enough to be a 7, Favourite Worst Nightmare's a 9. I don't like Whatever People Say that much, but I know how brilliant an album it is. See what I mean? Oasis are just a branch away, you might as well lump them in with the others; they've influenced most albums on the list. Metronomy, Friendly Fires, Klaxons, Primal Scream, Elbow and Everything Everything aren't straight indie-rock either.
