[2016-02-07] Coldplay headlining Super Bowl 2016 - Confirmed
Here's What the 2016 Super Bowl Halftime Show Sales Spike Looks Like 2/17/2016 by Joe Lynch EMAIL ME Jonny Buckland, Chris Martin, Will Champion and Guy Berryman of Coldplay perform onstage during the Pepsi Super Bowl 50 Halftime Show at Levi's Stadium on Feb. 7, 2016 in Santa Clara, Calif. CHRISTOPHER POLK/GETTY IMAGES Generally speaking, if you perform a concert for the largest TV audience of the entire year, you're going to see an increase in album sales. So after Super Bowl 50 -- which attracted 111.9 million viewers on Sunday, Feb. 7 -- halftime performers Coldplay,Beyonce and Bruno Mars were bound to see some serious sales gains. Bruno Mars -- who performed the No. 1 smash "Uptown Funk!" with Mark Ronson and had a dance-off with Beyonce that set Twitter aflame -- saw the biggest sales percentage increase. In the week prior to the Super Bowl (sales period ending Feb. 4, 2016), his two-album catalog moved a combined total of approximately 2,000 copies. That combined total spiked to 10,000 copies for the week of the Super Bowl (period ending Feb. 11). With a 400 percent sales increase, there is the most new life on Mars' catalog after Super Bowl 50. Super Bowl Halftime Show Album Sales Boost From 2010-2014 While Mars saw the largest percentage increase, Coldplay enjoyed the biggest numerical gain from the Super Bowl. Leading up to the Super Bowl, the U.K. pop-rock act moved a combined total of 20,000 copies of their seven studio albums in the U.S. For the week of the Super Bowl, Coldplay's seven studio albums (lead by their latest, A Head Full of Dreams) sold a combined total of 93,000 copies. That's a 365 percent sales increase for Chris Martin and company (additionally, Super Bowl 50 pushed their seventh album to No. 1 in the U.K. for the first time). As for Beyonce, the Queen -- who stole the Super Bowl halftime show according to numerous critics and online memes -- actually experienced the lowest album sales increase. She saw her five-album solo catalog increase sales to the tune of 44.4 percent, moving 9,000 for the week ending Feb. 4 and 13,000 for the week ending Feb. 11. Katy Perry & Missy Elliott's Super Bowl Sales Boost It should be noted, of course, that many viewers revved up by Beyonce's Super Bowl performance might've turned their attention to her new single, "Formation" -- which was available as a free download on Super Bowl weekend -- instead of buying her previous albums. Unlike Bey, Mars and Coldplay weren't offering a brand new single for free that weekend, which might partially explain why they enjoyed a bigger boost in album sales. Check out the sales increases in the graphic below. billboard

hahaaaaaa!!!!! Image Credit: cnn.net Why It Does Not Matter If Chris Martin Is Gay His Halftime show had a lot more to say than that. Anna Masica in Ideas on Feb 17, 2016 After the Super Bowl Halftime show, Chris Martin has received many mixed reviews. I have come across many articles praising him and berating him all the same. He has been referred to as the left shark from last year. Chris Martin was the Left Shark of this year's halftime showpic.twitter.com/MWV9B0VkcK — Spencer Althouse (@SpencerAlthouse) February 8, 2016 He has also been praised for the awesome show he did put on like in this BuzzFeed article. The most recent article I came across, though, and the craziest thing I have heard people care about, though, is if Chris Martin's bright, shiny clothes (juxtaposed to Beyonce and Bruno Mar's all black chic look) was a way of Martin to come out. People have the nerve to believe the entire Halftime show of the 50th Super Bowl was just a way for Chris Martin to let everyone know he is gay. Gwenyth Paltrow for 12 years. She is beautiful and there is nothing to be doubted there. Secondly, just because the stadium burst into an array of large colors and a sign that says "Believe in Love" does not mean this is a way for Chris Martin to come out. Given all the recent shootings, bombings, harassment issues, racial issues, LGBTQ issues, and so many more problems that have happened recently this is about so much more than one man being or not being gay. This was a message for love, strength, and togetherness. This was a statement made to shock, surprise, and provoke thought, not to start more bias or more rumors. Chris Martin has always been known to wear bright colors and lots of patches and has large psychedelic backgrounds floating behind him (seen above). Frankly, I would have been more confused if Martin would have been wearing the same outfits as the special guests and dancing the same as them too. These three singers were very different, yet very similar in their fights to work towards peace. They made a wonderful show filled with history, fight, and advocacy. While LGBTQ rights were obviously a part of what this show was fighting for, they were not the main points trying to be made. The fact of the matter is, it does not matter whether or not Chris Martin is gay. If you enjoy his music, you enjoy it, if you do not, then you do not. Talking about the rumors of with or not he is gay is counterproductive. Talking about the issues in a negative way seems to be the opposite of what they were trying to reach with the show. The fact of the matter is: the Halftime show had a lot to say and was one of the best shows in a long time, and whether or not Chris Martin is gay has nothing to do with that. So why does it matter? Just listen to the music and enjoy the show. link

to be fair, they always attracted hate, but it feels like this is "hate coldplay!" month.. well, once they start the tour, they'll be showered with fan-love.- [2016-Feb] Interview with Coldplay on NME
Coldplay: 'Glastonbury Is A Homecoming Gig' 16TH FEBRUARY 2016 Coldplay are now set to be the only act in Glastonbury’s 46-year history to headline the Pyramid Stage four times. In a new interview due to be published in this Friday's freeNME magazine, Chris Martin said, Worthy Farm is "the closest thing to a homecoming gig" the band have got. "I’d play there every day if we were allowed to," he added. Here, in an excerpt from the interview, Chris and the band discuss what it’s actually like to be onstage at such a humungous gig, and why for years it was always so tough to actually enjoy the moment. Can you actually see anything from the stage when you’re up there? Chris Martin: "It really depends. Sometimes we ask to see. You know, ‘Can we turn the lights up, Graham?’ Because Graham’s our [lighting] guy. That’s really all we can see. I think one of the reasons why award shows or TV shows feel a bit different is because you’re much more aware of the audience being there than you are in a regular gig. I think that’s why it takes a while to get used to. People will often say that it’s a weird vibe when you go straight into playing at the BRITs, or whatever." Do you get more nervous when you’re within spitting distance of the audience? Chris: "Well, the truth is, for the first few albums if I looked out I’d be worried that I’d see someone who wasn’t into it, so I stopped looking at people." So you’d just look into the distance? Chris: "Yeah, I’d just have a vague area with a vague look. And then after our third album, 'X&Y', it wasn’t making me very happy so I thought, you know, 'We’re selling out these places, and I’m not... I’m still kind of depressed'. So for various reasons, over the last six or seven years, I really try and find people. I think it came from watching Jay-Z’s shows where at the end he’d always point people out and say, 'I see you with the sunglasses' or 'I see you in the One Direction t-shirt'. He put the lights up! And I thought, 'That’s cool, to connect.' That was in about 2009. I really do find people and consciously look at them. Just to have a connection." What makes Glastonbury different to all the other festivals? Jonny Buckland (guitar): "We just love that place so much. It’s such a musical Mecca. We’ll come back until they beg us not to. The scale, the amount of different stuff happening – not just music, all the other stuff. I think we’ll try and stay [for the whole weekend]." Chris, you were 25 when you first headlined. Looking back, can you believe you pulled it off so young? Chris: "Yeah, I can’t believe that. Thank goodness there wasn’t much internet then, ‘cause I’m sure there were some people who weren’t that happy about it! I love it." There’s a stigma that’s attached to your shows now, in a way - every tour you do has to be amazing and better than the last, because the last few have been so good striking. Chris: "This one’s gonna be fun. If you like Coldplay it’s gonna be really good. That’s my poster quote! No, my point is that it’s really exciting putting it together and planning it out." Are you gonna be bringing back the LED lights from the last tour? Guy Berryman (bass): "That idea stemmed from something we saw Robbie Williams do once, where he got everyone to take a picture at a gig. And when you see the footage of all those cameras going off, it's like, 'Fuck, that was really clever'. So I think we invented those wristbands as a way of doing that in a much more controlled manner. And then other people started using them, so now we’re like, 'We’ve gotta step up our game a bit!' This time, I think they’re gonna do 'other' things too." You’re so big these days. Who do you look to for inspiration for massive shows? Chris: "Well, Bruce Springsteen has quote which is, 'More than rich, more than famous, I just wanted to be great' [sic]. And that’s really what I think. Bigness, popularity, all that… That comes and goes, you know? What can you do but make sure what you’re doing is something you can really stand behind, or what you’re singing is something you really need?" ^ old news..- [Forbes] How Coldplay Inspired A Korean Entrepreneur To Disrupt The Concert Business
How Coldplay Inspired A Korean Entrepreneur To Disrupt The Concert Business Jaeseok Lee has been listening to British rock band Coldplay for as long as he can remember. He’s such a devoted follower, Lee used to spend his free time managing Coldplay’s Korean Facebook FB +0.05%and fan pages. Frustrated that Korean fans couldn’t lure big, mainstream artists with the promise of blockbuster ticket sales, Jaeseok Lee came up with a simple way of removing risk for artists, and concert promoters: connect them with fans who can demonstrate demand and show a commitment to buying tickets. The Seoul-based startup is essentially a crowd-sourcing platform for concerts. More than 500K users around the world (90% of them outside Korea) have organized more than 80 fan-initiated concerts in 32 cities around the world. Jaeseok Lee says part of the reason Coldplay and other bands have never played Korea, China or Singapore and a number of other places is because the business of concert promotion (which includes ticket sales) is a bit like gambling. “They don’t know how many tickets will sell and how much fans will pay. Artists already get statistics from social media, but followers don’t equal concert goers.” So, Jaeseok Lee is putting the power into fans’ hands, encouraging them to use MyMusicTaste to communicate directly with artists. Serious fans willing to fork out the price of a concert ticket, universally around $100, are filtered from more casual listeners through short pricing surveys. Jaeseok Lee believes the platform represents a paradigm shift. “We’re telling fans – stop wishing, start making. The site enables artists to market themselves, their music and see who and where their audience is. For fans, they can show their interest and desire to pay to see a concert, and for promoters, it’s a measurable way of knowing whether a concert will pay off.” MyMusicTaste works with artists in two ways. Established artists with an existing fan base use the site to post a few tour dates as they’re putting together an itinerary. The site shows them where their heaviest concentration of fans are based, in order to maximize their time, adding tours to cities where there’s likely to be high turnout. The second works with local artists. Jaeseok Lee gives an example. “Take a Korean rock band who are quite popular at home, but are not that popular in Thailand. We can connect relevant Thai artists to stage a collaborative concert in Bangkok or Seoul.” MyMusicTaste makes revenue selling tickets as well as taking commissions promoting concerts. Jaeseok Lee explains a hybrid model makes it easier to attract promoters. “We could promote a tour with five stops for an artist and we could sell two cities to promoters. The platform has cash flow, so we can invest in forecasted artists and connect them with a promoter and earn a commission from the booking. We try to target a 30% profit margin of revenue.” Jaeseok Lee says revenue for 2014 was around $250k. For 2015, he reported $1.5m and expects MyMusicTaste to clear $10m this year. The business has grown from three co-founders, to a team of 25, but success wasn’t overnight. Jaeseok Lee put up $50k of his own money, and took advantage of the Korean government’s recent financial incentives for entrepreneurs and joined a local incubator. Family and friends worried they would go broke. They nearly did, spending a year in survival mode during their Death Valley until they raised a bridge round. With their recent round of $10m in Series A funds, and their revenue trajectory, Jaeseok Lee and his partners are looking to expand into China. But, while he’s happy to have achieved so much, Jaeseok Lee says he, and 50k users are still waiting for Coldplay to come to Korea. forbes- I have been a member on this message board for 13 years. Calm down peeps. As a certain Mr. Martin said, its just music. There are plenty of different options out there for you, if recent coldplay is not your thing. i remember reading in early interviews how chris hates talking about himself. and looks like it is still true to this day. the interview was very revealing, and that came mostly from his friends' perspectives. it really was heartbreaking to get a glimpse of a low point in his life. how wonderful to have such caring friends to fall back on. really makes you appreciate the band dynamics. you really can feel that the whole band is together no matter what, for anyone that needs a helping hand.- Hello, hello!
