LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"
Army of One is together with AHFOD my favourite snippet so far. How in the world does that sound like mainstream pop?? This is probably going to be the Major Minus of the album. I love that there is an organ in the background!! We haven't had that in a long time... I've seen some people hating the distorted voices in the background. I accept that opinion, however it's wrong to think that that automatically makes it pop. That stuff is mainly used by alternative electronic / ambient musicians. Also, Coldplay have been doing this from early on. Listen to Easy To Please to get an idea of what I mean.

You are aware of the fact that Noel is God, right?

Dammit, you...!! :laugh3: Slightly off-topic but Obama on a Coldplay album suddenly reminded me of the fact that the Pope is releasing a prog-rock album in two days (no kidding). So our boys even need to battle the Pope for #1 on the charts :laugh3: Source: http://www.altpress.com/news/entry/pope_francis_is_releasing_a_prog_rock_album_called_wake_up

This is gold. There should be a place specifically dedicated to Coldplay memes. Regarding the snippets HFTW: meh Everglow, Fun: interesting, could be great AHFOD, Birds: awesome

LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"
My opinion on the three snippets: AHFOD sounds good to me. I knew it wasn't going to sound exactly like the live version, but it doesn't sound overproduced to me. The most important thing: it still has the U2 feeling to it and that's a good thing! Birds sounds pretty interesting. Obviously it's too early to judge the song by a few seconds but it doesn't sound like EDM or R'n'B. As someone pointed out earlier, maybe this will have a Kid A vibe to it. Hymn for the Weekend: Okay this might be the ASFOS of this album. The snippet reveals that it's going to be a very mainstream R'n'B track. Some people like that - good for them, but for me that's an absolute no-go. I'm going to say it: For all Oldplayers this is probably going to be the worst song in their career, even topping PoC.

I agree, that's super cool. I love stuff like that :D I agree again, though I understand that jewel cases aren't the best for the environment. But they look much better and are far more durable than these fragile carton cases. But maybe the paper case on the picture is just a sleeve around a jewel case as they did with GS.

Given that she's a classical pianist with a special interest in Chopin, maybe we'll get parts of that infamous "Radio Dial Waltz" on Kaleidoscope?

That's true. However Prospekt's March always invokes in me a feeling of tragedy and melancholy mixed with a poetic speck of hope. Whereas Gravity is one of the few songs in my music collection that I very seldomly play because it is so sad that it's too much. Another one of these overly dark tracks that comes to my mind is Radiohead's Fitter Happier. Btw I just noticed again how much better the LRLRLR version of The Hardest Part is compared to the studio version. (Reasons I'm an Oldplayer Ep. 2349503473252) [video=youtube;4-kzYztyQ6k]

Gravity is the saddest Coldplay song ever. I can't listen to it when I'm happy or else I get depressed.

When we're already at the topic of horrible fans: One of the most cringeworthy things is when fans clap on the 1st and 3rd beat instead of the off-beat. Here's a video with an obviously annoyed pianist. The cool thing is that he plays an additional fifth beat at 0:39 to correct the wrong clapping. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yD3iaURppQw

Can't tell if sarcastic or not.

Up&Up
No, but I think I've found it. It's a b-side called Sunday. The main difference is that the Moby song is in minor and Up&Up is in a major key but other than that the piano riff is similar to the chorus of Up&Up. (Obviously I'm not implying they copied that. I guess you can find hundreds of songs with a similar chord progression. It just reminded me personally of that song.) starting at 3:05
-
Up&Up
Wow, just listened to it and I'm pretty sure this is going to be the best song on the album. I absolutely loved it!! The chord progression in the chorus kind of reminded me of a Moby song but I can't put my finger on it. Up&Up definitely has a gospel vibe to it.

A Head Full Of Dreams (Title track)
Wow I must say this exceeded my expectations! The song sounds very much like U2 and it has that lovely Oldplay feel to it. I actually got a little teary-eyed when I heard it the first time. Can't wait to hear the album version.

Coldplay and Chris Martin Open Up for New Album - WSJ Article
True, but that's the problem. They don't seem to care about doing the stuff that they're really good at. If Eminem wrote a hard-rock song it would also be terrible, because that's not what he's good at. Most artists are very talented in a certain field but would suck in others. The fact that Coldplay's talent is writing alternative rock is perfectly reflected in the professional ratings. Most music critics agree that AROBTTH was their best album and that after Viva the quality of their output decreased with GS having the lowest score of 61/100 on Metacritic. I highly suspect that their downward trend will continue if they don't return to doing the stuff that they're really talented at.

The tour section of their homepage is now blank, whereas before there was the statement "no tour scheduled yet". They deleted that! I guess we'll get the tour announcement very soon.

I agree with you 100%! But guys let's leave political discussions and the abortion debate outside this thread because controversial topics like that mostly end in overly emotional fights. I also hope that the new album won't be too political because I always cringe when artists take a strong political stance without really understanding the arguments of their opponents (see Ben Affleck). However Obama singing Amazing Grace doesn't necessarily mean that the album will be political. On the other hand I'm sure there would have been a public outrage if they featured Putin on their album, so why not leave politicians away completely? Regarding the album opener I'd be extremely surprised if it were better than Politik. At least the U2 comparison shows that it won't be an EDM track.
