As an outsider, sometimes I feel about other bands too. Whenever I listen to their stuff it can occasionally sound all the same to me (I know I haven't listened to it in depth, but still). Whether or not the styles differ depends on the ear and the brain deciphering it. All bands have their own "thang" and music is such a subjective thing. Plus in my opinion Coldplay's style changed, but maybe not to a great extent. There are many elements technical wise that have remained consistent, like the overall use of repetitive chords, those one note melodies, how the music swells and dips (there's always a certain pattern in it that I also see in other bands they have taken influence from), vague lyrical styles, dynamic changes (included in swelling and dipping), staying within certain tempos and not taking the most extreme experimental jumps, maybe with a few exceptions (which is why I like Kaleidoscope)... But not much. In my view the critic kinda has a point. Although they should have explained it further. Sorry for the long explanation.

Yeah. And artistic freedom is being oppressed. I recall a nice song by The Vapors called "Turning Japanese", which was more symbolic about growing up. If it was released now it would have gotten a really shitty reaction. And thanks for pointing out the hypocrisy here. We have a mob mentality that poisons social media and gets everyone turning a certain direction like ducklings following a mother duck that don't bother to question anything... And we wonder why the masses get so easily brainwashed. In the end it's best to think for yourself and do more research. Take your own stand, even if it's unpopular.

I had a dream once where I went to a weird zoo with Coldplay while they were in their viva outfits. We walked past a few enclosures, including a gorilla one. The final enclosure was for a mountain lion, but the odd part was... It wasn't even enclosed. The mountain lion even jumped across our path at one point. The dumb part was when Guy decided to climb into the "enclosure" to get a closer look at the animal. He stood in the back just waiting for it. We didn't even tell him to get out of there. Lol The zookeeper went in to access a weird door in the back near Guy. The animal sprinted and mauled the zookeepers hand, then proceeded to attack Guy and somehow he twisted his ankle (at least he looked like he did). I end up at a seemingly empty hospital. I see Guy sitting on an elevated platform with a doctor examining him (he looked PERFECTLY fine though) but apparently his elbow was broken in 3 places according to the super tall doctor. "Dumbass" I thought. I've had other dreams with them, most of which Guy seems to be the weirdo.

True true. What makes people really mad about this is that they say lots of Indian people get abused and made fun of for wearing the traditional garments, practicing and celebrating their culture in Western society, but the moment Coldplay and Beyonce sport it off, it's cool. I dunno it kinda seems valid to me. It isn't really fair, and I know LIFE ISNT FAIR but... I think the band really needs to be careful next time. I was actually wondering how people would feel if Coldplay were from India. They would probably react in the same manner like you said. lol

I think they might have been trying to say "Western Culture" in general. She may be a black woman but she's still from the West. She's not directly from Africa.

However, the thing that bothers me about this is how British History is biting Coldplay in the ass. And the cultural appropriation thing is one viewpoint people choose to believe. Similar concept for the "white people can't wear dreads" thing. The people that criticize white people for this sometimes don't realize that some of that may be for a practical purpose and that white people can be born with black hair and need to do this. As for aesthetics... I can see why they get mad but it seems like they aren't entirely seeing the greater scope. A hairstyle shouldn't be blown out of proportion when there are clearly bigger issues at hand. The forest or the trees?

Perhaps they believed that "the new guys" should get a chance. U2 already won so many things... So did Coldplay, but I've noticed since the very beginning of Coldplay's career that NME really did take a liking to them, so I'm not surprised that they got picked. Although there are other groups in this world that they probably could have picked over these nominees. (Not 1D and not 5sos) Not to offend these guys, but it kinda seems insulting to put 1D and etc. right next to U2 and more notable bands. Oh my god is that nickelback

Godlike huh. Funny I heard from the Instagrams that they were going to receive the "Godlike Genius" award from NME. Me thinks the title is just a tad bit overblown.
