An armed man was foiled in his attempt to rob a Bolton chip shop when the owner's partner threw a hot bowl of mushy peas at him, a court has heard. Kieran Naylor, 21, of Monks Lane, Breightmet, hit the owner of the Breightmet Lucky Supper Bar with a hammer in September 2006. Bolton Crown Court heard how he slipped on the peas that landed on the floor. He was given a three year prison sentence after pleading guilty to assault with intent to commit robbery. The couple, who are both in their 60s, were serving two regular customers at the chip shop when the attempted robbery took place. Burns Naylor, who was wearing a mask, tried to hit the owner several…

  3. Hitler wine fetches £3,995 - but don't mention its taste Last updated at 21:30pm on 17th February 2007 Comments Nazi tipple: The bottle bearing Hitler's face A rare bottle of wine with Adolf Hitler on the label exceeded expectations yesterday when it sold at auction for £3,995 - but its new owner won't be able to drink it. Discovered in a garage, the red "Fuhrerwein' - valued at £500 to £800 - attracted worldwide interest when it went under the hammer in Plymouth. Dating back to 1943, the bottle was from a collection understood to have been given to Hitler's officers during the Second World War to celebrate his birthday and the label bears a pictur…

Full TV coverage of the US murder trial of music producer Phil Spector will be allowed, a Superior Court judge says. Judge Larry Paul Fidler claimed it was time to overcome a "fear of cameras" in Los Angeles courts, prevalent since OJ Simpson's murder acquittal in 1995. But he warned he would "pull the plug" if the media acted irresponsibly. Spector, the 67-year-old known for his "Wall of Sound" production technique, is accused of killing actress Lana Clarkson in his home in 2003. He is alleged to have shot her in the foyer of his mock castle in the Californian city - but he claims Clarkson, who was 40, committed suicide. His lawyers were against the ide…

An A-list actor is accused of having a mile-high fling, and a private plane company plans to launch chartered flights for romantic liaisons. But what exactly is the legality of this much fabled form of sexual indulgence? It's a heady mix. There's the adrenaline of flying at 30,000 feet on the way to exotic shores and the frisson of illicit temptation. And maybe even the business class champagne. Sex on an aeroplane - after the seatbelt lights are off, naturally - makes good reading for fans of blockbuster romance novels, but for some it is more than just a fantasy. Janet Jackson and Richard Branson are self-confessed members of the "Mile-High Club" and Ralph F…

By ANDY DOLAN - More by this author » Last updated at 20:48pm on 15th February 2007 It was the only way Walter Butler could let his fiancee know he was still alive. But the hastily signed field service card he sent from the Flanders trenches never made it to Amy Hicks. Ninety years later, it was the couple's daughter Joyce Hulbert, an 86-year-old grandmother, who finally took delivery. Royal Mail officials admitted they were at a loss to explain why the post was nine decades late. Desktops '400 times germier than toilet seat' Last updated at 18:14pm on 15th February 2007 Comments (2) Desktops are '400 times germier than any toilet seat' The average office desktop harbours 400 times more bacteria than the average office toilet seat, according to new US research. And women's work areas are much more germ-ridden than men's, thanks in part to their habit of stashing snacks in their drawers. Makeup and hand lotions also helped transfer bacteria, as well as phones and handbags. Women have three to four times the amount of germs in, on and around their desks, phones, computers, keyboards, drawers and personal items as men do, the…

  17. Iran 81mm Mortar Story: Twists, Turns, and Eating Crow Kurt Nimmo Wednesday, February 14, 2007 It was just yesterday I received an email indicating my assertion the Iranian 81mm mortar story—part and parcel of the neocon effort to finger Iran for killing U.S. soldiers in Iraq—was in error, as it appeared at first glance indeed an Iranian death merchant manufactured 81mm mortar shells, thus debunking my debunking of the neocon effort, not that it particularly matters as the neocons will bomb the smithereens out of Iran regardless of the transparency of their propaganda. In short, I ate a healthy serving of crow, and then set about removing my original post and ad…

Williams enters rehab on birthday It is not the first time that the British star has entered rehab, having become addicted to drugs and alcohol after he left Take That in 1995. He said later that his condition was so bad that Sir Elton John "kidnapped" him and made him seek treatment. In September, his Asian tour was called off because of stress and exhaustion. He was to have visited Shanghai, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Singapore, Mumbai (Bombay) and Bangalore in November. A spokesman said at the time that to have performed in those cities after honouring European and South American commitments would have been "asking too much". 'Blow up' In a TV interv…
