By MARK LEIBOVICH Published: November 15, 2006 WASHINGTON, Nov. 14 — Senator Joseph I. Lieberman strode into a Democratic caucus gathering like he owned the place or, at the very least, like someone who is a flight risk and could leave at any minute, taking the Democrats’ new majority with him In other words, everyone was extra-special nice to the wayward Democrat on Tuesday. “It was all very warm, lots of hugs, high-fives, that kind of stuff,” said Senator Ken Salazar of Colorado. Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon marveled, “One senator after another kept coming up and shaking his hand.” And Senator Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas noted, “I gave him a hug and a kis…

The novel that propelled Czech writer Milan Kundera to international fame - The Unbearable Lightness of Being - has become a bestseller in his homeland. The first official Czech-language edition hit bookstores in the Czech Republic in late October, and has already sold out in many. The book, set during the 1968 Prague Spring, was banned under the communist authorities. Kundera, resident in France since 1975, reworked it for the Czech edition. "It has been a bestseller since 26 October here," said Vlastimil Benes at Kanzelsberger bookshop in Prague. "Many Czechs have not read it before - they knew about it only from the film. We've sold out now and are aw…

Computer trickery: the great beauty con By TESS STIMSON Last updated at 23:16pm on 13th November 2006 Digital beauty: Tess Stimson gets a complete transformation Now, I’m not beautiful. Genetics gave me what might charitably be called a Roman nose, and life has done the rest. I’m 38, and I’ve given birth to three children, criss-crossed the globe covering news stories, written five novels, survived divorce and the death of my mother, and generally notched up a ‘past’. Even on a good day, I’d be hard pressed to score seven out of ten on the looks front — and there have been precious few good days since I turned 30. Most of the time, I don’t ca…

Controversial laws allowing people with untreatable personality disorders to be detained, even if they have not committed a crime, are to be revived. The draft Mental Health Bill was axed by ministers in March after years of opposition. But some of the key proposals are to be retained in an amending bill to be announced in the Queen's Speech. Campaigners said the plans to update England's 23-year-old laws would represent an abuse of civil liberties. The draft Mental Health Bill had proposed allowing people to face compulsory treatment even if their condition could not be treated. Under the plans, they would have been able to be held for 28 days before facing…

Babies born at or before 22 weeks should not be resuscitated or given intensive care, a report says. The recommendation is being put forward by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics, which considers ethical questions raised by advances in medical research. For those born after 23 weeks, the recommendation is that doctors should review the situation with the parents and take their wishes into account. But doctors warned no two babies born at 22 or 23 weeks would be the same. The report has been released after two years of research. It also gives guidance on how parents should resolve arguments with doctors over the fate of their babies. The report comes a…

GORDON BROWN suffered an embarrassing blow to his standing last night after he was booed at an awards ceremony for Britain’s music industry. Whistles, shouts and boos from some members of the audience greeted the Chancellor as he appeared on the stage at the Alexandra Palace, in London. Mr Brown appeared as a surprise guest to present an award to Sir George Martin, the Beatles’ producer known as the “fifth Beatle”, and induct him into the UK Music Hall of Fame. The Chancellor had to make several attempts to speak over the hecklers before finally gaining the attention of the audience. Would you wear a face bra? Last updated at 16:59pm on 10th November 2006 Claudia Connell: 'I couldn't wait to tear the wretched thing off' A new type of bra which is strapped on the face to reverse signs of ageing is the latest wacky beauty fad in America. So, does it really work? We asked three curious writers to test it out - with hilarious results... Claudia Connell, 40, lives in South-West London. She is single. She says: If somebody told me that I could look ten years younger by wrapping a pair of old lady's surgical stockings around my face - I would probably do it. And it isn't from Newcastle which surprised me: Charlton part company with Dowie Charlton have announced that manager Iain Dowie has left the club. The 41-year-old has only been in charge for 12 Premiership games after replacing long-standing boss Alan Curbishley in the summer. But the Addicks have only won two league matches and following a 3-2 defeat at Wigan on Saturday are bottom of the table with eight points. The former Crystal Palace boss did lead Charlton into the Carling Cup quarter-finals last week. The club said on their website that they would make a full statement on Tuesday morning. Teachers' unions are calling for these sites such as ratemy teachers.co.uk to be banned, saying derogatory remarks about teachers' boozing, body odour and teaching ability amount to cyber bullying.
