The City Court in Aarhus said it could not be ruled out that some Muslims had been offended by the 12 drawings printed in Jyllands-Posten, but said there was no reason to assume that the cartoons were meant to "be diminutive toward Muslims." The newspaper publis…

Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali, the nation's most senior Muslim cleric, compared immodestly-dressed women who do not wear the Islamic headdress with meat that is left uncovered in the street and is then eaten by cats. Only one US state has allowed same-sex marriages so far Gay couples in the US are to learn whether they will have the right to marry in New Jersey. The state's Supreme Court is to release a decision in a case brought by seven gay couples, who claim the state constitution entitles them to marry. Currently, only Massachusetts allows same-sex marriages. New Jersey is one of only five US states without either a law or a state constitutional amendment blocking same-sex marriage. Advocates on both sides believe New Jersey is more likely than other states to allow gay people to wed. New Jersey authorised domestic partnerships two years ago, but advocates of …

It also said in a two-yearly report that populations of many species, from fish to mammals, had fallen by about a third from 1970 to 2003 largely because of human threats such as pollution, clearing of forests and overfishing. 14. Book reveals the famous one-liners they never said Last updated at 13:16pm on 25th October 2006 It's a one-liner Jim, but not as we know it Some of history's most famous one liners never existed and are about to be exposed as inventions in a book published this week. Mr Spock never said: "It's life Jim, but not as we know it" and Sherlock Holmes never actually uttered the words "Elementary, my dear Watson". What the Star Trek hero actually said was: "No life as we know it" and the closest the fictional detective came to his most quoted phrase was a single use of the word "elementary". The Star Trek line was first heard in the song Star Tre…

  17. October 22, 2006 Average IQ by State: Honest Numbers at Last By Steve Sailer One of the most popular Web postings of November 2004 was a table purporting to show that John Kerry had swept the 16 states with the highest average IQs (such as Connecticut with its 113 mean). George W. Bush, in contrast, had carried the 26 dumbest states (such as Utah at only 87). The first person to post these data after the election exulted: "Wow, what can I say, in the first 24 hours over 540,000+ people viewed this page!" I would guesstimate that total viewership of the IQ table ultimately approached ten million fellow Democrats —all consoling themselves with the thought that …

  18. Now firms can sponsor an entire TV channel Last updated at 13:03pm on 25th October 2006 Advertisers can now sponsor entire British television and radio channels, after more than 50 years of regulation were swept away today. The rule change means channels such as ITV1, Bravo or Capital Radio can, in theory, be sponsored by brands such as Coca Cola or Sony. Broadcasting regulator Ofcom announced the move, designed to free up more revenue possibilities in a world where "on demand" TV and radio means the value of traditional advertising breaks is being undermined. But the new rules contain strict provisos, including that a channel cannot rename itself after a comm…
