Airplane ban on liquids set to be relaxed Last updated at 12:45pm on 2nd November 2006 A ban on carrying liquids on board flights will be relaxed next week, it was confirmed. Passengers are to be allowed to carry small bottles of toiletries as long as they are contained in a clear resealable plastic bag from November 6, the Department for Transport (DfT) said. Baggage rules have been tightened at UK airports since August 10 when an alleged plot to blow up planes was thwarted. The restrictions have since been eased gradually, but the ban on liquids has remained - although passengers leaving UK airports for non-USA destinations have been allow…

A shocked Mrs Chapman, said: "The manager asked me if I was going to take my hoodie off. I replied 'what hoodie' as the top I was wearing was a pink cardigan made of cotton waffle from the Marks and Spencers Limited collection which is not cheap." "Admittedly it does have…

Thugs consider Asbos a 'diploma', says report By JAMES SLACK Last updated at 08:49am on 2nd November 2006 Hoodies: Half of all orders given to the teenage tearaways are breached Young thugs consider Asbos a 'diploma' in offending which they can breach repeatedly and with impunity, a devastating report reveals. The Youth Justice Board found half of all orders given to the teenage tearaways are breached - in some cases six times or more each - but most are simply let-off by the courts. Only six per cent were jailed for flouting their Asbo. And, even when they were punished for committing a new crime at the same time, only 37 per cent were sent d…

TELEVISION personality Axle Whitehead has been rebuked by Network Ten after exposing his penis at the Australian Recording Industry (ARIA) Awards. The incident was not telecast on Network Ten, and it was unclear how many of the 10,000 people, including young music fans, who were at the Acer Arena in Sydney last night saw it. Whitehead, who has hosted Ten's Video Hits for two years, was on-stage presenting an award to hip-hop outfit Hilltop Hoods with radio jock Jabba, when he exposed himself. He also simulated masturbation on the ARIA trophy as the winners made their way to the stage. "I was shocked that he did it," said one guest w…

Houston, our tapes have gone missing Search is on for historic TV footage of mankind's first landing on the Moon Andrew Gumbel / London Independent | August 13 2006 Houston, we have a problem. There is probably no artefact in the history of space exploration more precious than the first television images of the Moon captured by Neil Armstrong and his fellow astronauts as they disembarked from their lunar module in July 1969. Unfortunately, the magnetic tapes of those images have gone missing. Worse still, they appear to have been missing for at least 30 years - and nobody, until now, even noticed. The man who devised the lunar camera for the mission, a retir…

Exam chiefs ridiculed for allowing 'text speak' English answers Last updated at 11:16am on 1st November 2006 Students would be given marks if expressing a 'valid idea' in text speak Exam chiefs were branded "ridiculous" today after admitting that English answers written in text message language will be acceptable as long as they are correct. The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) said the use of phrases like "2b r nt 2b" or "i luv u" in exam papers would be allowed as long as candidates showed they understood the subject. But politicians today condemned the practice amid fears about the literacy levels of school leavers. The admiss…

Music downloaded from iTunes can only be played on an iPod The code that prevents music downloaded from Apple's iTunes store being played on any portable player other than an iPod has been "cracked". Apple has not commented on claims that Jon Lech Johansen has "reverse engineered" the FairPlay system. Prominent hacker Mr Johansen has made a name circumventing software used to restrict the use of digital media. His company, DoubleTwist, said that it planned to license the code to other digital music player manufacturers. "There's a certain amount of trouble that Apple can give us, but not enough to stop this," Monique Farantzos, managing…

Are Schools The New Juvenile Court? A couple of stories that I ran across, yesterday had me questioning the role of public schools in determining how justice is served to students that attend. There has been some news about new policies that have been introduced by schools in the Indianapolis area. Schools will expel or suspend students for things that do not even happen at school. Anything that student writes or posts online; blogs, posts on MySpace or FaceBook, photos, movies, and I assume anything that is posted elsewhere, like forums or social news sites (as long as the poster can be identified), can be used against them at school. Who actually determines that t…

Lady Liberty Not a Welcome Mat By Brenda Walker Published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on July 4, 2003 Great icons may suffer great misunderstandings in which erroneous mythology grows to obliterate the real meaning of an important symbol. Probably the most misunderstood image in America is the Statue of Liberty, which is surely burdened with more wrong ideas than any other symbol in our history. First and foremost, Lady Liberty was never designed as a welcome mat for immigrants, those huddled masses about whom we hear so much sentimentality. The real name of the statue is "Liberty Enlightening the World" which states the true meaning. Indeed, the sculpt…

Most Compelling TV Comment Since Murrow......... ...That's a pretty strong statement, I realize, but Wednesday night's "Special Comment" by MSNBC's Keith Olbermann on the loss of habeas corpus protections lives up to the billing. On his "Countdown" show last night (Oct. 18, 2006), Olbermann delivered an eloquent explanation of why George Bush's signing of the Military Commission Act on Tuesday is such a betrayal of American values. Olbermann's "Special Comment" was well-researched, grounded in more than 200 years of American experiments-gone-bad with restricting rights of people under suspicion in times of alleged foreign dangers, dating back to John Adams' Alie…

It's official: Women more grumpy than men in the morning Last updated at 22:00pm on 25th October 2006 Talk to the hand: Women are more grumpy than men in the morning Mabe it's that withering look she gives you as she clatters her coffee cup or perhaps she's just plain snappy, but men have for years bemoaned the perils of early mornings with their better halves. Millions of chaps across the country have come to agree that the best way to avoid the outbreak of World War Three over breakfast is to keep well away until the bad tempered creature that came from beneath the duvet (aka the wife) lightens up a bit. New research has confirmed they have e…

Muslim leader blames women for sex attacks Richard Kerbaj October 26, 2006 THE nation's most senior Muslim cleric has blamed immodestly dressed women who don't wear Islamic headdress for being preyed on by men and likened them to abandoned "meat" that attracts voracious animals. In a Ramadan sermon that has outraged Muslim women leaders, Sydney-based Sheik Taj Din al-Hilali also alluded to the infamous Sydney gang rapes, suggesting the attackers were not entirely to blame. While not specifically referring to the rapes, brutal attacks on four women for which a group of young Lebanese men received long jail sentences, Sheik Hilali said there were women who "sway su…

Why thousands are having sex while they sleep Last updated at 11:46am on 26th October 2006 Disturbed sleep: Sexsomniacs are more common than medical researchers previously thought Thousands of people are having sex - while they are asleep, an internet survey has revealed. The research reveals that so-called sex-somniacs - who have sex romps while they doze - are more common than medical reports might suggest. As yet there is no cure for the condition, which often leads to difficulties in relationships. "It really bothers me that I can't control it," Lisa Mahoney told New Scientist magazine. "It scares me because I don't think it has anything t…

Translating computer could spell the end of interpreters Last updated at 19:00pm on 25th October 2006 Lost in translation: A translating computer could have worked wonders at Fawlty Towers For those who find themselves stammering gibberish whenever they go abroad, help could soon be at hand. Scientists have developed an automatic translator that lets anyone speak a foreign language. The device means people can mouth a phrase or sentence in English only for the words to come out in Spanish, French, German or whichever tongue they may prefer. The idea - which would get rid of the need for an interpetor or foreign dictionary whilst abroad - …

The German Defense Ministry said Wednesday it is investigating an incident in which two Israeli fighter jets allegedly fired shots and dropped flares near a German warship patrolling the Lebanese coast as part of a peacekeeping force.
